H.pylori & Dgl

I know I have posted on here about h.pylori a long time ago, but am still wondering. I found out i had it about 3 months ago, when they tested me for this, they also tested me for celiac...and surprise...I also have that too). I am already allergic to 3 types of antibiotics, so for now, I am refusing the standard medication. I have been taking omeprazole daily, and it made me feel back to normal.

After being out of town at a wedding last weekend, I felt some refluxy symptoms again after all this time, so I started taking DGL (De-Glycyrrhizinated Licorice). I have been taking 2 a day...and gosh, these are the most awful things I have ever tasted...i would rather be eating marmite, which I previously thought was the worst thing...my British husband likes it..ick. Anyway....it does seem to make me feel better, if i am having symptoms.

But, I am wondering if there anyone on here that has been cured of h.pylori with DGL or any other "natural" remedy and by not taking the antibiotics? I am just so nervous to take them.especially when I know some strands are resistant, and my dr won't test for what strand it is...grrrr! Though, I am going to find a new GI dr soon at University of Chicago. But, I also know untreated h.pylori can lead to scary stuff...stuff i don't want.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Anne

As always, be careful about what you put in your body. Even some of these "natural" remedies can be dangerous. I'd start off with the safest ones such as Apple Cider Vinegar and or Garlic. Hope this helps.

From what my GI doctor and my PCP told me not all H Pylori needs to be treated. It is something that is found in large numbers of people. It was found when they did my endo but since I was having no symptoms they didn't want to treat it. Although I am quite mistrustful of doctors after hearing the same from both of them and with my mistrust of pharmacuticals (for me that includes herbal 'remedies') I haven't worried about it.

So, if lots of people have h.pylori, is it that sometimes it is active, and other times it lays dormant? I totally felt like mine had gone away for 2 months, until I went to this wedding, and had lots of things with tomato in it, which I am sure did not help, being that it is acidic.

I think I will eat mellow foods for a few days and see how it feels. I am sure it doesn't help I made enchiladas with tomato sauce last night either :(

From what I've read heart burn is your body's way of fighting off H pylori because it can't handle high acidic levels (probably why they say to use vinegar to fight it). So if you are having a lot of heartburn that might be indicative of the H pylori rearing its ugly head. Not sure if that helps, but it might explain some of your symptoms.

Hi Anne,

Yes, there are natural means to eradicate H pylori. And if you are having health problems and heartburn, then 'controlling' it is not enough- you need to get rid of it once and for all.

DGL is a start and helps to control H pylori, but will not eradicate it on its own. As another member pointed out, garlic is useful for controlling it, but won't eradicate it.

While acidifying the stomach might help, H pylori has adapted to live in the acidic stomach over eons of living in human stomachs and while apple cider vinegar might help your heartburn, there is no evidence that it can control H pylori.

But you can eradicate it using an aggressive protocol of 2 solid months of VERY high quality DGL (capsules so you don't have to chew them if you don't like them) and Mastic Gum at high dosages. Both of these remedies are safe and effective for H pylori. The protocol also encourage the use of adjuncts such as ginger, garlic and turmeric eaten in the food during therapy.

This is followed with 2 months of HIGH QUALITY probiotics, which replace the good bacteria as well as using specific strains of probiotics that are well known to help control H pylori themselves.

Each one of these substances has been well researched for safety and efficacy in the control of H pylori. Used all together, they provide a knockout punch to those stomach bugs.

Let me know if you have any questions.

hmm...so how do I know if my DGL and probiotics are "high quality"? I thought DGL had to be chewed so that it mixes with saliva?

also, I have looked everywhere for mastic gum, and cannot find it. even my local HFS looked at me like i was asking for chewing gum...though maybe i just wasn't talking to the sharpest tool in the shed :P but generally where does one buy this?

and what constitutes high doses?

Could you have been glutened at the wedding? Some of us get horrible heartburn with a glutening but I don't know what your gluten symptoms are.

I followed the Autoimmune Protocol Diet which is really strict for a while, but later other foods can be added back into your diet.  Following the AIP diet strictly allows you digestive system to heal and the inflammation to calm down.  Sort of like feeding a sick baby easy to digest food instead of spicy pizza.   It's important to get the inflammation down because chronic inflammation leads to other health problems.  Histamine is released as part of the autoimmune response to gluten.  High histamine levels make you feel bad and can cause breathing problems (worsening asthma), cardiovascular problems (tachycardia), and other autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, diabetes) and even mental health problems. Following the low histamine version of the AIP diet allows the body to clear the histamine from our bodies.  Some foods are high in histamine.  Avoiding these makes it easier for our bodies to clear the histamine released after a gluten exposure.   Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and calm it down.  Vitamin D is frequently low in Celiacs.  The B Complex vitamins and Vitamin C are needed to clear histamine.   Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals boosts your intestines' ability to absorb them while healing.   Keep in mind that gluten-free facsimile foods, like gluten-free bread, are not enriched with added vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts are.   They are empty calories, no nutritional value, which use up your B vitamins in order to turn the calories into fuel for the body to function.   Talk to your doctor or nutritionist about supplementing while healing.  Take a good B Complex and extra Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine (shown to promote gut health).  Most B Complex vitamins contain thiamine mononitrate which the body cannot utilize.  Meats and liver are good sources of B vitamins.   Dr. Sarah Ballantyne wrote the book, the Paleo Approach.  She's a Celiac herself.  Her book explains a lot.   I'm so glad you're feeling better and finding your balance!

So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure!

Some people prefer eating gluten before bed, then sleeping through the worst symptoms at night.  You might want to try that and see if that makes any difference.   Several slices of toast for breakfast sounds okay.  Just try to work up to the Ten grams of gluten.  Cookies might only have a half of a gram of gluten.  The weight of the whole cookie is not the same as the amount of gluten in it.  So do try to eat bread things with big bubbles, like cinnamon rolls.   Yeah, I'm familiar with the "death warmed over" feeling.  I hope you get the genetic test results quickly.  I despise how we have to make ourselves sick to get a diagnosis.  Hang in there, sweetie, the tribe is supporting you.

Thank you, a little expensive but glad to have this source.

@knitty kitty  Thank you very much for the advice. I did the exam this morning, my doctor actually suggested me to take something called "Celiac duo test" in which I first do the genetic test and if it's positive, then I'll have to do the antigen blood test. I have to attend 1 month until my results are ready, so I have some weeks to increase the amount of gluten I eat daily. It will be hard because my health is not the best right now, but I also did a blood test to cheek my nutritional deficiencies. The results will arrive on Tuesday, so I can ask my doctor what should I do to control my symptoms and blood levels during this month. For now I'm resting and paying attention to what I eat— at least I don’t look like a vampire who just woke up, like I did yesterday. I'm still scared because is the first time I've felt this sick, but this is the right moment to turn things around for the better.  I realized that if I eat gluten at lunch I cannot finish the day properly, I become severely tired and sometimes my stomach hurts a lot - let's not talk about the bloating that starts later. Do you think is it ok to eat gluten just in the morning, like some cookies and slices of bread for breakfast?
