I am new with Celiac disease.. and I heard that gluten is not listed as 'gluten'... So, I need the most detailed and accurate lists possible to keep of ingredients that are gluten or have gluten in them...

For food items, I need any kind of ingredients that have it in them or are gluten... (i know the basics, wheat and stuff like that)

And for non-food items, I need the same (as an example, I am looking at my shampoo bottle, and I have NO CLUE what Tocopherol, Hyrolyzed Soy Protein, or Dehydroacetic Acid are.....) So, I would not know if they contain gluten or not...

I just looked at my shampoo bottle again, and WHEAT GERMAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE is one of the ingredients....

Gluten is in EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try these links for useful information:

Unsafe ingredients.

Safe ingredients.

Open Original Shared Link If you don't see "wheat, rye, barley, barley malt, oats" on the labels, its not there, or hidden in "flavors, starches, etc."

I am not a supporter of lists--they are out of date the minute that you print them. Formulas are constantly changing. That is why I like to buy from companies who will label clearly (see the third link above). Always read the label.

Hi, the only problem is, I don't understand alot of ingredients, like those in my shampoo... I know nothing with say Gluten, and I was wondering what those versions of ingredients will be listed as...

As in, I don't know what on the label would be bad for me... I just found out about a week and a half ago, so I am Brand New to this...

I don't know if I am explaining right, haha... Does it count that I know what I mean? :)

The first two links are to lists found on this board. Each is a list of ingredients in alphabetical order. If you find the ingredient on the second list, it is safe. The first list contains ingredients which are always gluten sources and some which might be. Things with "might be" status are safe if the product you are looking at is made by a company on the third list unless the label specifically mentions a gluten grain by name.

Over time you will get to know which common ingredients are safe and which are not, but in the beginning, look them up on the lists. You don't need to understand what they are to see if they are on a list. If you are still not sure, you can post a question here. Somebody will know the answer.

In the US, on a food label, wheat must by law be declared. Barley can hide in flavors, but the companies mentioned in the third list won't hide it.

Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is rarely from wheat (and a food label would have to say so).

Hydrolyzed soy protein is gluten-free. Dehydroacetic acid is a gluten-free preservative.

Thank you so much, Peter... :)

Gluten must me indigested to cause intestinal harm. This is a toss -up as some with DH (skin rash ) can not use HBA products with gluten but others will tell you that it must me swallowed to cause damage. As an adult I can't see eating shampoo & skin creams. Are you very sensitive to gluten? Again some are & some are not.It may be a choice you wil have to decide as everyone is different.....

Pet food can also cause problems as well...

It does take time to learn everything... hidden gluten is tricky. Ie: soy sauce. LaChoy & Wal-Mart brands are easy fines & safe.malt is not safe or things containing malt.

Most distilled products are gluten-free Ie: heinz vinegar,Mt Olive pickles, heinz pickles. There are many name brands ok.....

Progresso soupsthat are gluten-free: creamy mushroom, lentil, chik & rice, chik & wild rice, corn chowder, chik & vegetable. dinty moore beef stew (not the chik stew)Lipton (cup) cream of chik soup, philly cream cheese, philly frozen swirls, edy's, breyers, dreyers ice cream without cookie sor crunchies added.

dairy queen soft serve, peant buster parfaits, blizzards are gluten-free. I don't get the blizzards because sometimes the spoons go from one container to another place the mixer they use for blending is used for gluten things as well...

Shopping the outer walls of the grocery store are pretty safe! ie: fuits, vegetables, meats..... most of these items are all safe as long as there is no marinades, sauces, or coatings ......think naked foods, you can always spice them up at home with McCormick spices.... they are clearly labeled...as is Kraft, &hormel products.

Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

How do I contact someone at celiac.com concerning the cessation of my weekly e-newsletter? I had been receiving it regularly for years. When I tried to sign-up on the website, my email was not accepted. I tried again with a new email address and that was rejected as well. Thank you in advance!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
