I'm a travel agent in Canada and fellow celiac patient. Make sure that your travel agent asks for special diet - well in advance and the cruise line will accommodate. Also, the buffets are full of all things natural as well as huge amounts of no-no's. If you haven't used a travel agent call the cruise line directly - they have a special requests line on the documentation.

I find that the best thing to do is to talk to the maitre d' in yuor seated dining room and explain what you need. Also - absolutely refuse sauces - they have been made early and will contain things that we can't tolerate.

The cruise lines are hurting in this economy and will do all in their power to accommodate you - please don't hesitate to ask and if you don't get satisfaction go to the purser's desk immediately.

Have a great trip :)

Hi there! I'm cruising soon as well. I've been on one cruise before and I just had to pick through all the buffets. I ate lots of eggs, fruit, yogurt... you have to use your best judgement- "when in doubt, do without!!" Corny, I know but that's my motto. As far as the dinner goes, usually there is some sort of fish on the menu. If you like fish, that's always a safe route. You just have to order it plain. Steamed veggies are good, salads... it's hard asking the non-celiac wait staff gluten questions because they usually have no idea. Even asking the chef is a little skeptical to me, only because there are so many factors of contamination in the kitchen.

You'll be fine though, just go with what you know.

Does anybody know of a guide that ranks reevaluates universities and colleges in terms of their accommodation of celiac disease or food allergies?   Thanks in advance for any leads! Valerie

thank you, i have been doing that the last few weeks and will continue to do so. I had not had my ttg iga checked since I was diagnosed 14 yrs ago so I am not sure if they ever dropped below the 15-20 range.    all my other labs are completely normal but I am concerned that this may be signs of refractor celiac or something else since I'm so careful with gluten-free diet

Around 9% of celiacs cannot tolerate any oats, even gluten-free oats. It might be worth eliminating them for a few months, then get re-tested.

I only eat certifed gluten-free products but a lot of which are processed. Could there be trace gluten in those or is that very unlikely?

For people with celiac disease hidden gluten in their diets is the main cause of elevated Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Antibodies (tTG-IgA), but there are other conditions, including cow's milk/casein intolerance, that can also cause this, and here is an article about the other possible causes (you may want to avoid oats):
