Question About Candida... Help Pls!

Ok, so I took the candida test this morning and failed miserably in so far as my results were definitely not "normal." ANyone familiar with this test? Is it credible? I can't find a main stream website (like Mayoclinc) that mentions it, only holistic. Anyone did this and change their diet accordingly?

My friend, a doctor, thinks that since my bloodwork was inconclusive for celiacs BUT I definitely respond to certain "wheaty" products more so than others, it may be candida.

Anyone else coping with this? If so, how-- did/do your doctors support you? HOw are you treating it? How do you explain it to your friends/family? What have you found to be helpful?

THanks, Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I'm not familiar with the candida test, though I've been reading about it and it interests me. I'm starting to come into contact with people whose doctors have used it with credible results. I discovered my issues with candida first by taking the long version of the candida quiz. My score was horrendous! I read anything I could about candida, and particularly like Dr. Crook's book The Yeast Connection and Women's Health. I then began taking an over-the-counter anti fungal (I chose grape fruit seed extract) at the same time as changing my diet to "starve the yeast." I had great results, which only improved when my doctor prescribed Nystatin, a prescription-strength anti fungal. Knowing that my doctor was not educated about candida and had her doubts, I sent her some copies of pages from the book that pertained to my most critical symptoms prior to my appointment. She decided we didn't have much to lose, so she prescribed Nystatin. I just had my physical after a year of treatment and she could not deny my results - I'm practically symptom free. Now I'm addressing other potential imbalances in the gut through diet and taking a good quality probiotic.

Hope this was helpful,

Kim

I was diagnosed with candida by a DNA microbial (stool) test. My naturopath gave me nystatin, followed by high dose probiotics. Nystatin intially caused some nausea side effects, but that disappeared after 3 days. I stayed on Nystatin almost 5 months, but had no more side effects. It's an inexpensive, easy drug to take. It does not harm the liver, like stronger drugs (difulcan). My next DNA microbial stool test showed absolutely NO candida. I did NOT follow the 'candida diet (restrict sweets, fruits and a bunch of other foods), but I don't overeat sweets anyway. However, the Nystatin completely eliminated my candida.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
