Gift Of Herbs

My neighbor dropped off a bunch of veggies and herbs delivered in groery bags. Would you eat the herbs? I can't really wash them well and if bread was in that...Oh the paranoia. But if they were safe,....Mountains of organic herbs.

What whould you do?

Wash them as best as you can, leave them to dry and wash again......and again and again and again until you are so tired the paranoia wears off.

For me, personally I would not be overly concerned. The only way I can see them getting cc's is if after they were cut they were placed in an area where there were crumbs/flour. Rinse them good and they probably will be fine. You could ask your neighbor if after they were cut if they went straight into the bag. It might make you feel better. ;)

I don't know how things are where you live, but here bread is almost always sold wrapped in plastic or other packaging. The likelihood of the bag being contaminated would be so close to zero that I would not worry.

You can wash them pretty well in a colander and you should be just fine.

I'm still up in the air about the herbs. Thank you for the reassurances though. I did use some in a recipe the other night, but I was already suffering from an unrelated glutening. Darn CC.

I want to share my thoughts on plastic bread bags though. The bread has to get into the bags somehow. They are in the same factory crumbs or flour dust touching at least some of the bags. I can't imagine that there isn't cc on the outside of a bag. That wouldn't be the reason for me eating or not eating the herbs. Realistically, the cc from bread to the bag, to the grocery bag to the unwashed herbs would be pretty minute.

I think I may wash them until the paranoia is rinsed off them. Then plant more of my own for safe harvest.

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.
