Hello all! I have a question or concern really. My doctor diagnosed me with celiacs about 2 months ago by blood test. Since then i have been gluten free or atleast learning to be. My main symptom is dirreah and weight loss. I was at 165lbs (overweight for my height of 5'2") Since my diagnosis i have dropped to 140lbs which is about my ideal BMI says my doctor, but she mentioned this week when i went in for an antibiotic to clear up strep throat that if i drop more to let her know. Is all this weightloss something i should worry about? I love the way i look and i finally am not overweight as i always have been, but one tends to worry.

Congratulations on your diagnosis. For you, weightloss is a sign that your body isn't absorbing food. So even though it's good to lose weight if one is overweight, losing too much is a problem. Plus, if you aren't getting enough nutrients you could get sick with colds or flu or get vitamin/mineral deficiencies, osteoporosis, etc. I'm 5'3" and was 168, now 156 and would love to get to 140 but I want to be healthy getting there.

Did your doc do any testing for Vitamin D, B vit or anemia when she diagnosed you? I had vitamin deficiencies that caused osteopenia plus it put my hormones out of whack so I went into menopause early (and fast).

The tummy troubles should stop soon, if you're gluten free. That should help. Good luck to you!

All my doctor tested me for were celiacs, fat mal absorbtion and parasites. I take vitamin D and Calcium supplements daily.

Im not at an unhealthy weight and i hopefully wont be at any point but who knows! Thanks so much for the input!

She used to take supplements, but her abdominal pain is so debilitating that she hasn't been able to continue.  Her primary care team has been suggesting liquid supplements rather than pill form to help.  They just drew a lot of blood Friday and we are slowly getting all that work back.  I will definitely check into thiamine!  Thanks!

They have not done that yet.   We are looking at some other treatments to help. And you are correct.  The tickborne illness has been a wild ride.  Our whole family has been battling different tickborne illnesses.  Its expensive and exhausting.

I cannot tolerate it at all - triggers burning and nausea, ditto aspirin.  Here in the UK I take Paracetamol.

For back pain, I take a combination of Cobalamine B12, Pyridoxine B 6, and Thiamine B 1 (in the form Benfotiamine), which have an analgesic effect.  These three B vitamins together work way better than those over the counter pain relievers.  Theses are water soluble B vitamins that are easily excreted via the kidneys if not needed.  Thiamine will also help the nausea. @stephaniekl, welcome to the forum, Is your daughter taking any nutritional supplements?   Weight loss and failure to thrive are two symptoms of thiamine insufficiency.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms are not recognized as such by doctors.   I experienced similar symptoms when I became malnourished.  Thiamine deficiency symptoms can become worse quickly, and can affect one emotionally and mentally.  Although blood tests for thiamine aren't accurate, do have your daughter checked for nutritional deficiencies.  Thiamine B 1 works with the other B vitamins and magnesium.  Thiamine and Niacin B 3 help improve Gerd.  All the B vitamins are frequently low due to malabsorption.  Vitamin D will help calm the immune system.  Thiamine helps the immune system fight off viruses like those tick borne illnesses.   Thiamine Mononitrate, which is in many vitamin supplements, is not bioavailable.  I was taking a multivitamin containing thiamine mononitrate and still became deficient in thiamine. Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine has been shown to promote intestinal healing.  A form called TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) is also excellent for correcting thiamine deficiency.  A combination of Thiamine, Cobalamine B12, and Pyridoxine B 6 has analgesic properties.  I take it for back pain.   Keep us posted on your progress!
