For those of you who may have acid reflux with celiac disease, do you get it so bad it feels more like you are having a heart attack? I have attacks like this now and then. I'm on perscription prilosec 40mg. 1x daily. I had a stress test 3 yrs. ago. Didn't show anything. Just had another attack Sun. p.m. and should maybe gone to the E.R. but didn't. Went to my cardiologist today though. Set up another test. So I guess I wonder has anyone with celiac have any heart problems stemming from celiac? Thanks, Sister golden hair

I am 45 yrs old. I have had lots of problems since I was 7 or 8. I have had acid reflux maybe atotal of 10 times that I can remember but I can remmeber having what I thought were heart attacks from the age of 17. Everytime i've gone to the er they told me it was either stress or anxiety.

Since I have been gluten free for nearly a year haven't had any of those symptoms until the day after the New Year. We took my mom out to Golden Corral for New Years Day dinner. Was very careful in what I ordered, or so I thought.

That evening I felt fine but the next morning I didn't feel so good. It progressively got worse to the point I couldn't breath, my left arm felt kind of tingly, Dizzy, etc. Finally I couldn't take it anymore and asked my sweetie to take me to the ER. It was bad. Anyway, they checked my heart, my blood pressure, my gallbladder, my blood sugar, even ran a cat scan for blood clots in my lungs. Everything was normal. I told the er doc about my gluten free status and that I had gone to Golden Corral the night before. Thank goodness he was Celiac educated, because he told me I had a classic symptom of getting glutened. He hgave me an IV with Pepsid and 3 tablespoons of Mylanta. I quit hurting within 10 minutes. I went home an hour later with no pain at all. I felt like crap the next day plus my chest felt bruised, like I had been hit. But other than that was ok.

I used to have reflux so bad I'd be in tears! It was painful to eat, painful to drink, and painful to breathe!

Since being gluten free though, it hardly bothers me ever. And I have a hiatal hernia. now all I get is hiccups.

Quick update.  I saw the title of this thread and forgot that I'd actually started it!  Oh dear! It seems my new healthy diet was the cause of these symptoms,  I had a clear colonoscopy, thankfully. Now I know what it is I shall try to resume the healthy diet - the symptoms are annoying rather than painful, and I think it was doing me a lot of good, I certainly lost some pounds around the waistline (pity they piled back on again at Christmas!)

Physiological Associations between Vitamin B Deficiency and Diabetic Kidney Disease https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10135933/ "There are recent advances in our basic understanding of the effects of thiamine deficiency on DKD and vice-versa. Thiamine, TPP, and TMP transporters may have an abnormal expression in diabetes [28,29,30]." I explained this in Monday's post.

Stegosaurus, One size doesn't fit all. Most celiacs do fine with oats and other non-gluten cereal grains. Grains can contribute important nutrients to the diet and are a relatively inexpensive food energy sources. I don't agree with the position that all celiacs should eliminate all grains from their diet. This line of thinking has been promoted for years by books like Dangerous Grains which make the case on logic rather than actual real world data. Like many biological phenomenon, what would seem to be logical doesn't pan out to be true in the real world.  But if you are one of those in the minority of celiacs who cannot tolerate cereal grains at all, I'm glad that you were able to sort that out.

While it's true that lifting heavy weights is a good bone builder, it may not be advisable for those with certain medical conditions like heart disease, arthritis and for the elderly or for those who don't have access to the equipment.  Bone building drugs like Fosamax slow down the disposal of worn out osteoclasts (bone cells) and so help maintain/restore bone density as seen in scans but because the retained cells are no longer healthy, the process may contribute less to actual bone strength than healthy cells would.
