Is abdominal distention normal in celiacs? Has anyone else had this? My stomach yesterday was 30 inches and this morning it was 39!!It has gone down two inches half way through the day. This has been a recurring thing for the past 4 months or so. It feels like someone is traveling down my inteinstines with a knife. Can anyone relate? Anyone have distenstion this bad or worse?

Thank you

Oh yes, bloating happens! It can be a symptom, or a sign that you have eaten something that you're intolerant to. Gluten, of course--even a trace, dairy, soy, corn, etc are some common things that can trigger it.

You may want to try keeping a simple food diary--it can be most helpful in determining what is causing what.

Big time normal! One of the more common symptoms, in fact. And when I say BIG, well yeah... Some folks have to wear only expandable pants

Oh my goodness...yes!I have the same problem, and before I diagnosed myself as gluten intolerant I never knew why my stomach was so bloated.Nobody would believe me when I said I looked pregnant at times...until they witnessed it.Its so uncomfortable!

Yep. Mine wasn't as bad, and I never had *severe* symptoms, but I had this one to some degree.

OMG thank you for replying. I mean I read bloated belly and I'm thinking this is more than just bloating. This is down right ridiculous.

I eat very clean (whole foods no gluten on a daily basis)except for a treat meal and dessert once a wk. last I had mac n cheese chicken nuggets biscuits and smores. all in moderation. i do this to boost metoblism and keep myself on track with my eating disorder.

Even when I did 4 whole wks without a treat meal I still had the abdominal pain and distention (stretching out 4-9 inches).

the only gluten of trace that i could be getting in daily is from rolled oats and ff salad dressing. maybe vitamins.

i tested neagtive on the celiac panel but once again im not taking in gluten daily just once a wk. so im hoping the GI can figure it out. it's been way tooooo long to be in pain.

I'm amazed to see how many people are self diagnosed and that as soon as they go gluten free there symptoms go down.

This is NOT good! You must stop doing this. Every meal like this is doing you damage and you are not giving yourself a chance to heal if you are doing this once a week. You really must find yourself some gluten-free treats. [end of lecture :) ]

Before I went gluten free my stomach would expand up to 6 inches in 2 hours. After changing my diet completely with NO cheating for 2 weeks straight it all stopped. However, if I get glutened it swells up again and will last about a week. You have to cut gluten out completely if you want the bloating to stop.

If your stomach is greatly distended and you've put on weight but it only appears around the stomach,

Then I'd check for Insulin Resistance (a precusor to Diabetis)

Best Regards,

David

I'm glad yours cleared up! I know how annoying it can be. I did try it 4 wks in a row and still everyday my stomach expanded anywhere from 4-9 inches. Craziness! I have an apptment with GI if he can not figure it out or diagnose me I am going to do my own thing and go gluten free for at least 2 months or so. thank you for your advice.

Please read the original post--they are looking for a gluten and milk-free treat to replace Tootsie Rolls for their child who loves Tootsie Rolls, but can no longer have them due to a dairy issue--they are not looking for M&M's.

They both do.  The peanuts add nutrients to the treat. Tootsie Roll: Sugar, Corn Syrup, Palm Oil, Condensed Skim Milk, Cocoa, Whey, Soy Lecithin, Artificial and Natural Flavors. M&M Peanut: milk chocolate (sugar, chocolate, skim milk, cocoa butter, lactose, milkfat, peanuts, soy lecithin, salt, natural flavor), peanuts, sugar, cornstarch; less than 1% of: palm oil, corn syrup, dextrin, colors (includes blue 2 lake, blue 1 lake, red 40, yellow 6 lake, yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1, yelskim milk contains caseinlow 5 lake, blue 2, red 40 lake), carnauba wax, gum acacia. glycemic index of Tootsie Rolls ~83 gycemic index of M&M Peanuts ~33   The composition of non-fat solids of skim milk is: 52.15% lactose, 38.71% protein (31.18% casein, 7.53% whey protein), 1.08% fat, and 8.06% ash.   https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9781118810279.ch04  Milkfat carries the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. But M&M's contain milk, and would not be at all like a Tootsie Roll.

I appreciate you validating me because medical is an issue and it's not ok at all they they do this. Some days I just want to call the news media and just call out these doctors especially when they are supposed to be specialist Downplaying when gluten-free when they should know gluten-free is false negative. Now dealing with other issues and still crickets for disability because I show no signs of celiac BECAUSE IM GLUTENFREE! Actively dealing with sibo and skin issues.Depression is the key because thats all they know, im depressed because medical has caused it because of my celiac and related issues. I should have never ever been employed as a bus driver. After 3 years still healing and ZERO income desperately trying to get better but no careteam for celiac other than stay away frim wheat! Now im having care because my head is affected either ms or meningioma in go in tomorrow again for more scans.I know im slowly dying and im looking like a disability chaser

M&M Peanuts. About the same calories and sugar while M&M Peanuts have fiber, potassium, iron and protein that Tootsie Rolls ("We are currently producing more than 50 million Tootsie Rolls each day.") don't. Click the links to compare nutritional values.  Both are made with sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.  I use them as a gluten free substitute for a peanut butter sandwich.  Try her on grass fed, pasture fed milk. While I get heartburn at night from commercial dairy milk, I do not from 'grassmilk'.
