Quaker Rice Cakes

Funny thing happened today. I bought Quaker plain rice cakes yesterday and decided to try them this morning. I ate them in the car and by the time I got to work I had to go poop. I ended up having diarrhea, and am wondering if there could be hidden gluten in them even though the ingredients don't indicate so. Maybe it's just the stress of my new job (started on Wednesday in a very busy government office). Anyone know about the rice cakes?

I believe that Quaker claims that the normal-sized ones are gluten-free... but Quaker is a risky company...very high oat contamination. Not sure...I haven't had their rice cakes in many months and then I was getting symptoms from something else, too, so often that I wouldn't even have noticed if I was ingesting gluten or not.

Quaker is definitely a risky company. They have high contamination of oats. I used to eat the rice cakes but haven't had them in a while either and after seeing their contamination issues of some things I think I'll stay away from that company.

I have always eaten the plain rice cakes without any problems. BUT, having said that... I think I will also avoid them in the future. I am doing the SCD, and after getting cleaned out during this year, I don't want ANY contamination issues after all this work!! :)

I eat the plain rice cakes and don't seem to have a problem with them, but if there is a high risk of oat contamination than maybe I should try and avoid them.

I've heard just enough about contamination from them - though as you can see, not everyone has that problem - that I don't eat them. I stick with Lundberg Farms.

Quaker's claim to fame is oats, yes. However, it is not as though everything is made in one room! Mydaughter loves their rice cakes and has never had problems. But if one were feeling uncomfortable about cross-contamination at the factory there are many brands of rice cakes available. Each person has to decide for himself about taste though. Some brands are loved by some and hated by others and it is hard to switch if you are hooked on one brand. Are you certain it was a gluten reaction and not something else? Pooping is not always a bad thing!!! If it was from gluten, are you certain it could not be from something else?

Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

      The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.
