Arrowhead Mills Buckwheat Flour

Hi all

I am 3 months gluten-free now, and doing much much better -most of the time.

It's been a few days I feel like crap again (BM problems, skin rash, fatigue, brain fog...) and looking back at my food diary, I am thinking arrowhead mills buckwheat flour is the culprit (bought a pack last week, since then I baked quite some stuff with it. after a few days the reaction began, now worse than ever...stopped eating anything I baked with it yesterday; hope I am going to get better soon!) this is also the only new thing I introduced in my diet these last 2 weeks.

I just wanted to ask if anyone have had a reaction to it before? I thought it was safe 'cause I understand they use a shared facility but clean the equipment in between, plus throw the first batches away...didn't want to be "too paranoid" about it but I guess I will have to!

Any advice for finding a safe buckwheat flour?? I really like it, would love to continue using buckwheat!

thank you all!

Sophie

I've been gluten-free close to 1 yr and been using this brand with no issues except if I eat too much I get gassy. Possible you're reacting to the flour itself, to buckwheat. Once your gluten-free a lot of times intolerance and/or food allergies that have been masked before will now be revealed.

Hope this helps.

Some people are that sensitive. I use it all the time too without any obvious problems. Try a different brand that is from a strictly gluten free facility to see if the same thing happens. It might give you an answer if it is cross contamination or a sensitivity to the buckwheat itself.

thanks to both of you.

I think you're right, I'll try one made on dedicated equipment & see if it works better for me!

If you are unsure whether you might be intolerant to buckwheat you may want to try Pocono Cream of Buckwheat or Kasha. It is grown in dedicated fields, harvested with dedicated machines and processed in a facility that only processes buckwheat. I live a short way from where it is grown and processed and I buy the hulls as a mulch and to use to stuff pillows as well as eat the cream of buckwheat when I want a comfort food.

thanks so much for your input!

I just realize now that I've had buckwheat (Pocono Kasha) about a month ago...didn't seem to have a reaction back then (but I had very little, when these last days I've had a lot of stuff w/ buckwheat flour in it...)

I still have some at home so I will try to recover first, and then try the Kasha again...trying to make sure if it's the buckwheat or the shared equipment.

thanks again; gosh this is tricky, sometimes, to figure out what is going on!!

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
