Atn: Food Lion Shoppers: Betty Crocker gluten-free Mixes On Closeout

For anyone who has a Food Lion grocery store nearby, they had Betty Crocker gluten-free Yellow Cake mix and Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix on Closeout price for $1.88 each. These are regular $3.79, so it's huge savings. I looked at the boxes carefully and could not see anything wrong with them, (but they did say "may contain soy on the cake and "contains soy" on the cookies.) I found them on a closeout shelf in the middle of the freezer section. I checked the regular aisle and they no longer had a space for these products, but they did still have Betty Crocker gluten-free brownie mix for full price on the shelf. So go out and buy these while you can, Food Lion may not be selling them anymore.

Well that's not good news. I did notice the disarray on the shelf the other day.

Hopefully this is just at Food Lion stores or maybe even select stores within the chain. In the last few months I have seen my Food Lion stores phase out many of their organic products and one store practically eliminated the organics section completely, which was where most the gluten free stuff was. This particular store where I saw the closeouts never had an organics section in the first place. Either way, a closeout means Food Lion either won't be selling it anymore OR Betty Crocker is redesigning the packaging and the old product is getting closed out to make room for new. Since there were no spaces on the shelf for the product it's likely they won't be carrying it because it didn't sell well. :(

It looks like the Betty Crocker gluten free mixes aren't moving in the stores that I shop at. I'm hoping they won't discontinue them here. I know there are other gluten intolerant people in this town.

I do hope they aren't phasing them out. It would be a shame as so many like them. We don't have Food Lion stores here but you post was really helpful for me.

I somehow missed this "(but they did say "may contain soy on the cake and "contains soy" on the cookies.)" on the packages. The mystery of why they didn't agree with me is now solved.

I may have to check out Food Lion today. Also on a side note when I was up in PA the end of June, Big Lots had Perky's nutty rice and nutty flax for $2.00 a box. They were clearing out the old style boxes since the box changed. I bought 5 boxes. It was really nice not paying tax on food too. I don't know if it was a regional thing or if other Big Lots would have it.

Shoot, I had to pass on the cookies, but at that price I decided to risk trying the yellow cake. I'm not super sensitive to cc soy like I am cc gluten so maybe it will be okay when I try it. Now that I'm thinking about it my guess is that they make all the gluten-free mixes on the same equipment. Pretty much anything with chocolate has soy added. That's why they have to put "may contain soy" on the yellow cake mix.

Thanks for the tip, I never would have thought to look for gluten-free stuff at Big Lots. I bet they have a lot of stuff come through when packaging changes.

Well here were my finds today. Went to Food Lion and they indeed had the chocolate and yellow cake mixs and the cookies marked down to $1.88. I bought two boxes of each. Went to Big Lots and they had Perky's nutty flax cereal ($2.00/box), Envirokidz orgainic gorilla munch and panda puffs cereal ($2.50/box), Thai kitchen instant rice noodle soups ($0.50/package), and Hokan Rice Sticks(rice vermicelli noodles $1.20/package). I'm sure there were other things but that was just what I was interested in. I did buy one box of the gorilla munch to try, three packages of the Thai instant rice noodle soup, and one package of the rice sticks. I like to go in there every now and then because you never know what you are going to find.

I'm glad you found the closeout Betty Crocker mixes. I went to Big Lots and saw the Envirokidz cereal. I also saw (and bought) Sam Mill's Corn Pasta for 1.20 and Mother's Rice cakes for 1.29. The rice cakes are the first I have found that don't contain soy. They do contain milk (butter) but it hasn't been bothering me in small amounts. I made Peanut Butter and jelly rice cake sandwiches out of these this week and I have nearly eaten the whole package. I'll be going back to stock up I think. I'm going to try the corn pasta tonight for dinner and I will stock up if it's good. I really liked Mrs. Leeper Corn spaghetti but it is $4.99 a box, so I hope I will like this brand just as well.

My migraines generally have their onset during the early morning hours as well. Presently, I am under siege with them, having headaches all but two days so far this month. I have looked at all the things reported to be common triggers (foods, sleep patterns, weather patterns, stress, etc.). Every time I think I start to see a pattern it proves not to pan out in the long run. I'm not sure it's any one thing but may, instead, be a combination of things that coalesce at certain times. It's very frustrating. The medication (sumatriptan or "Imatrix") is effective and is the only thing that will quell the pain. NSAIDs, Tylenol, even hydrocodone doesn't touch it. But they only give you 9 does of sumatriptan a month. And it doesn't help that medical science doesn't really know what causes migraines. They know some things about it but the root cause is still a mystery.

Just a gluten free diet is not enough.  Now you have to identify and replenish your malnutrition.  Celiac disease is co-morbid with malabsorption syndrome.  Low vitamin D, Low Thiamine caused Gastointeston Beriberi, low choline, low iodine are common the general population, and in newly diagnosed Celiacs in the western culture its is more likely.  It takes time to heal and you need to focus on vitamins and minerals.  Gluten free foods are not fortified like regular processed foods.

Dear Kitty Since March I have been following your recommendations regarding vitamins to assist with various issues that I have been experiencing.  To recap, I am aged 68 and was late diagnosed with Celiac about 12 years ago.  I had been experiencing terrible early morning headaches which I had self diagnosed as hypoglycaemia.  I also mentioned that I had issues with insomnia, vertigo and brain fog.   It's now one year since I started on the Benfotiamine 600 mg/day.  I am still experiencing the hypoglycaemia and it's not really possible to say for sure whether the Benfotiamine is helpful.  In March this year, I added B-Complex Thiamine Hydrochloride and Magnesium L-Threonate on a daily basis, and I am now confident to report that the insomnia and vertigo and brain fog have all improved!!  So, very many thanks for your very helpful advice. I am now less confident that the early morning headaches are caused by hypoglycaemia, as even foods with a zero a GI rating (cheese, nuts, etc) can cause really server headaches, which sometimes require migraine medication in order to get rid off.  If you are able to suggest any other treatment I would definitely give it a try, as these headaches are a terrible burden.  Doctors in the UK have very limited knowledge concerning dietary issues, and I do not know how to get reliable advice from them. Best regards,

@rei.b,  I understand how frustrating starting a new way of eating can be.  I tried all sorts of gluten-free processed foods and just kept feeling worse.  My health didn't improve until I started the low histamine AIP diet.  It makes a big difference.   Gluten fits into opioid receptors in our bodies.  So, removing gluten can cause withdrawal symptoms and reveals the underlying discomfort.  SIBO can cause digestive symptoms.  SIBO can prevent vitamins from being absorbed by the intestines.  Thiamine insufficiency causes Gastrointestinal Beriberi (bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea or constipation).  Thiamine is the B vitamin that runs out first because it can only be stored for two weeks.  We need more thiamine when we're sick or under emotional stress.  Gastric Beriberi is under recognised by doctors.  An Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test is more accurate than a blood test for thiamine deficiency, but the best way to see if you're low in thiamine is to take it and look for health improvement.  Don't take Thiamine Mononitrate because the body can't utilize it well.  Try Benfotiamine.  Thiamine is water soluble, nontoxic and safe even at high doses.  I thought it was crazy, too, but simple vitamins and minerals are important.  The eight B vitamins work together, so a B Complex, Benfotiamine,  magnesium and Vitamin D really helped get my body to start healing, along with the AIP diet.  Once you heal, you add foods back in, so the AIP diet is worth doing for a few months. I do hope you'll consider the AIP diet and Benfotiamine.
