Is There Anything I Can Eat?

I went gluten free, dairy free, soy free back in February due to Celiac. I got better but now I am back to being bloated constantly and constipated. I am also exhausted all the time and sleeping in the afternoons which isn't me. My doctor took me off of veggies (ugh!) to see if there was an intolerance with those, but nothing has changed. I look like I'm 3-4 months pregnant and it hurts... it's horrible!

What should I try now? Could it be fructose and fruit intolerance? I am only eating meat, fruit, rice cakes, and cereal right now. Should I try taking high fructose fruit out? I know apples are high in fructose and I eat 2 a day....

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I want to feel better and feel like myself again!

I know exactly how you feel! I looked preggers too! I went from 95 lbs to 140 lbs in about four days! I just found out that I might have candida so i eliminated all fruit as well. I only eat meat, eggs, and veggies. Make sure there's no yeast! Plus, make sure you take a lot of probiotics because you're not getting any. That should help with the constipation.

Try dropping the rice cakes and cereal. What are you putting on the cereal? If it is Rice Dream rice milk that is not safe for us. Add in rice, potatoes, well cooked veggies and fruits. Cream of buckwheat cereal is good if you have to have a cereal in the morning. The less processed foods the better for healing.

I agree, drop the cereal and rice cakes for a month. See if there is any improvement. Then try eliminating nightshades, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes. Try it for a month and see if it helps.

A few years ago, Rice Dream listed barley as an ingredient. Today, the manufacturer does not list barley and labels the product as gluten-free. Did the product change, or are they now hiding the barley and lying about it? You decide.

Yes. Although RICE DREAM Beverage is processed using a barley enzyme, the barley enzyme is discarded after use. The final beverage might contain a minute residual amount (less than .002%) of barley protein.

I know that I stay away from the rice milk, big time.

Rice Dream milk a no go...huh...who'd have thunk it.... ugh! I'm glad I read this now instead of finding out the hard way! Thanks Shauna!

I have been Loving almond milk! It's soy, lactose and gluten free! Tastes great too! Plus I live in the central valley of California, where almonds are a HUGE crop around here! Blue Diamond brand buys a lot of the locally grow almonds, and I buy their milk! See, I'm going local and green! :) Maybe not, but it makes me feel good...lol!

Feel better Dancer! That weight gain stuff from the bloated belly really messed with my head. I know how you feel! I have always struggled with weight, so I had gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago. Talk about drastic measures! Since then, any weight gain freaks me out more than the average person, because I have a strong "I won't go there again" inner voice. Once I figured out it was the gluten..not me, who put that beer belly gut on....I was thrilled to watch the scale drop...quickly!

It will get better. Sounds like some great advice has come before me. Good luck!

I drink vanilla silk, but I haven't had issues with Soy, and I only use it in my tea and the occasional cereal. I was surprised with the rice milk!

When I get wonky (stomach wise) I switch to strictly fresh foods, chicken breast, mashed (home made) mashed potatos, lots of fresh fruits and veggies...It gives me time to heal a little. Maybe switch to completely fresh with as little processed as possible.

I'm sorry you're having trouble!

For rice milk if you live near a Wegmans their rice milk is for sure safe. It is imported from Canada and Wegmans is very strict on the gluten issue. It is the one I use for chocolate milk as I don't care for any milk straight.

You all ROCK! I will give it a try.

I cut out bread and baked goods becasue those really make me sick. That is why I eat the rice cakes and cereal. But I will try not eating them for awhile. I don't put anything on my cereal except blueberries. No milk. I don't like the rice milk... it doesn't set well. :)

I go to a nutritionist in a few weeks and will check back in and let you all know what she says... She has celiac as well and works with the local CSA chapter.

      Thank you! That's helpful. My kids eat very little processed food. Tons of fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs and occasional red meat. We do a lot of rice and bean bowls, stir fry, etc.  Do you think with all the fruits and vegetables they need a vitamin supplement? I feel like their diet is pretty healthy and balanced with very limited processed food. The only processed food they eat regularly is a bowl of Cheerios here and there.  Could shaking legs be a symptom of just a one-time gluten exposure? I guess there's no way to know for sure if they're getting absolutely zero exposure because they do go to school a couple times a week. We do homeschool but my son does a shared school 2x a week and my daughter does a morning Pre-K 3 x a week.  At home our entire house is strictly gluten free and it is extremely rare for us to eat out. If we eat at someone else's house I usually just bring their food. When we have play dates we bring all the snacks, etc. I try to be really careful since they're still growing. They also, of course, catch kids viruses all the time so I  want to make sure I know whether they're just sick or they've had gluten. It can be pretty confusing when they're pretty young to even be explaining their symptoms!

      @lizzie42, You're being a good mom, seeking answers for your son.  Cheers! Subclinical thiamine deficiency commonly occurs with anemia.  An outright Thiamine deficiency can be precipitated by the consumption of a high carbohydrate meal.   Symptoms of Thiamine deficiency include feeling shakey or wobbly in the legs, muscle weakness or cramps, as well as aggression and irritability, confusion, mood swings and behavior changes.  Thiamine is essential to the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine which keep us calm and rational.   @Jsingh, histamine intolerance is also a symptom of Thiamine deficiency.  Thiamine is needed to prevent mast cells from releasing histamine at the slightest provocation as is seen in histamine intolerance.  Thiamine and the other B vitamins and Vitamin C are needed to clear histamine from the body.  Without sufficient thiamine and other B vitamins to clear it, the histamine builds up.  High histamine levels can change behavior, too.  High histamine levels are found in the brains of patients with schizophrenia.  Thiamine deficiency can also cause extreme hunger or conversely anorexia.   High carbohydrate meals can precipitate thiamine deficiency because additional thiamine is required to process carbohydrates for the body to use as fuel.  The more carbohydrates one eats daily, the more one needs additional thiamine above the RDA.  Thiamine is water soluble, safe and nontoxic even in high doses. Keep in mind that gluten-free processed foods like cookies and such are not required to be fortified and enriched with vitamins and minerals like their gluten containing counterparts are.  Limit processed gluten-free foods.  They are often full of empty calories and unhealthy saturated fats and additives, and are high in histamine or histamine release triggers.  It's time you bought your own vitamins to supplement what is not being absorbed due to malabsorption of Celiac disease.  Benfotiamine is a form of Thiamine that has been shown to improve intestinal health as well as brain function. Do talk to your doctors and dieticians about supplementing with the essential vitamins and minerals while your children are growing up gluten free.  Serve nutritionally dense foods.  Meats and liver are great sources of B vitamins and minerals.       Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.       @SamAlvi, It's common with anemia to have a lower tTg IgA antibodies than DGP IgG ones, but your high DGP IgG scores still point to Celiac disease.   Since a gluten challenge would pose further health damage, you may want to ask for a DNA test to see if you have any of the commonly known genes for Celiac disease.  Though having the genes for Celiac is not diagnostic in and of itself, taken with the antibody tests, the anemia and your reaction to gluten, it may be a confirmation you have Celiac disease.   Do discuss Gastrointestinal Beriberi with your doctors.  In Celiac disease, Gastrointestinal Beriberi is frequently overlooked by doctors.  The digestive system can be affected by localized Thiamine deficiency which causes symptoms consistent with yours.  Correction of nutritional deficiencies quickly is beneficial.  Benfotiamine, a form of thiamine, helps improve intestinal health.  All eight B vitamins, including Thiamine (Benfotiamine), should be supplemented because they all work together.   The B vitamins are needed in addition to iron to correct anemia.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!
