Hi,

New member of the forum and a ceoliac for about two years now.

Before I found out I was intolerant to Gluten I was a big lager drinker, so after being diagnosed there was only one way I was going, to drink Pints of Cider. But my problem is I find that drinking it causes memory loss, and hangovers from hell. Does any one else get this?? Or should I just accept the fact that maybe Cider is not for me??

Any comments would be greatly welcomed.

Which brand are you drinking? Not all ciders are gluten-free.

Most major brands of cider are gluten-free, including Strongbow, Magner's, Blackthorn, and Woodpecker, but you may be consuming more alcohol than you intend. ;) Cider can be a bit stronger than lager. If it's a locally brewed cider, be sure they haven't added any malt.

This is going to sound crazy coming from Kentucky, but what exactly is cider that you buy at a store?

You may know it as Applejack or Hard Cider. It is apple cider that has been fermented to make it alcoholic.

Well that just strikes me funny. I didn't know that sold that stuff on purpose! I've seen jugs of apple cider and heard people say, "that done turned hard", but I didn't know they sold it in the store! To us, it's garbage!

Im going to see if I can find it in town, is it good?

Funny, today I added apple juice to my food list and did fine on it.

I miss good, fresh-squeezed apple cider from living back east. You can't hardly find it here in California.

I was drinking hard cider before I was gluten-free. Love the stuff! I usually have to go to a liquor store to find the brands I like best, Blackthorn or Magner's. It's not sweet like applejuice, a little fizzy, and it has a nice kick to it. ;) English and Irish pubs often have it on tap too.

Hi,

Just Strongbow, I find Magners too sweet for me and Bullmers is the same. As no one else seem to have a problem I think I need to find an alternative when down the pu, thanks all :)

Strongbow is definitely gluten-free. Could you maybe have a problem with the yeast or the fructose?

      I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

      Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?

      Thankyou so much for your words.Its a hard battle when a supposed well known hospital whose celiac " specialist " has down played me because my colon looks fine and put it in my medical and so pcp doesn't take seriously. In their eyes we all carry that gene.Im having alot of bad days trying to be positive because of it.
