Found Gluten Free Soy Sauce At Wally World!

Just wanted to share my little bit of happy with everyone.....The Walmart store brand soy sauce (Good Value) says gluten free right on the bottle! I don't know if this is new or it's been that way, but I was so excited. We are on such a tight budget, I was thrilled to be able to buy a store brand product again! Now I can let loose on some of those fried rice recipes I got from here.

YAY! Thanks for telling us. I have been using Tamari. It's good but like you i'm on a tight budget, so thanks. Every little bit helps!

YOU ARE KIDDING!!!!! Wow!!!! I've been using LaChoy too, and I agree it's kinda nasty. I've also used Tamari and it's pretty ick too. I'm gonna have to look for that next time I'm in Wally World!!!!

In Canada, VH soy sauce is widely available and is gluten-free. Most VH sauces are gluten-free, but there are a few exceptions. VH sauces are sold only in Canada, although the parent company is in the US :( It's good to know that there is a mainstream soy sauce available in the states that is gluten-free.

Thanks for that info. Unlike some of others, I like LaChoy(uh oh, I'm an outcast), but depending on where I get it, it can be expensive. How is the taste? I have found that most of the WalMart food is not such a Great Value because I throw it away because of the taste!

I just got back from WalMart and could not find the sauce. I got the LaChoy elsewhere. Maybe just the supercenters carry it.

On a related note, what is the deal with tamari? I read in a few places that San-J brand tamari is recommended, but wheat is listed right there on the ingredients. I'm not a fan of LaChoy or any "soy sauce" that is just salt water... is there really a wheat-free tamari, and if so, where can I get it? Should I be looking in Asian stores?

San-J makes two tamaris - one is wheat free, one isn't.

Thanks Peter :D:D

I had no idea that VH soy sauce was gluten-free. Here I have been buying tamari when all this time I could have bought the less expensive one. Do you know if the lite VH is gluten free too???

tarnalberry Community Regular

Yes, the wheat-free San-J tamari, according to the company, is gluten-free. (But that's a good question to remember to ask. ;-) )

What you’re describing is actually very common, and unfortunately the timing of the biopsy likely explains the confusion. Yes, it is absolutely possible for the small intestine to heal enough in three months on a strict gluten-free diet to produce a normal or near-normal biopsy, especially when damage was mild to begin with. In contrast, celiac antibodies can stay elevated for many months or even years after gluten removal, so persistently high antibody levels alongside the celiac genes and clear nutrient deficiencies strongly point to celiac disease, even if you don’t feel symptoms. Many people with celiac are asymptomatic but still develop iron and vitamin deficiencies and silent intestinal damage. The lack of immediate symptoms makes it harder emotionally, but it doesn’t mean gluten isn’t harming you. Most specialists would consider this a case of celiac disease with a false-negative biopsy due to early healing rather than “something else,” and staying consistently gluten-free is what protects you long-term—even when your body doesn’t protest right away.

Yes, I meant if you had celiac disease but went gluten-free before screening, your results would end up false-negative. As @trents mentioned, this can also happen when a total IGA test isn't done.

I found at Disney springs and Disney they have specialist that when told about dietary restrictions they come and talk to you ,explain cross contamination measures tsken and work with you on choices. Its the one place I dont worry once I've explained I have celiac disease.  Thier gluten free options are awesome.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.
