Good Experience At Hospital

My toddler was admitted to the hospital on Friday afternoon for a severe sinus infection/bronchitis, and when we checked in they asked about dietary restrictions. I told them I have Celiac and they said it was no problem, they would send me a gluten-free meal when they sent up the parent trays. I was pretty skeptical, however, the food was actually good and didn't make me sick. I managed to avoid cc from the toddler (he wasn't eating much anyway) as well as from the inlaws, and I brought gluten-free cookies and crackers and snacks and whatnot since the hospital didn't have anything except PB crackers and gluten filled things. On my "mommy bracelet" they even had a little sticker that said "gluten-free ONLY" so all the dietary people would know.

Anyway, just wanted to share my experience with the hospital. Hopefully he won't have to go back however if he does, at least I know they can feed me :).

I hope the little guy is feeling better soon and am glad to hear you had a good experience.

I hope your baby is better soon!

So happy to hear about your good hospital experience. That's one of my horrible fears that I would be hospitalized and get glutened a bunch of times.

It was one of my worst fears as well, however it seems that at THIS hospital it may be ok. I checked everything twice and it was all good.

The boy is doing better, thanks!

Put the hospital name on here that way if someone is googling Hopsitals with guten free food they will find them. Also, do they take adults? Might be a bit far from KS for an emergency. :)

HAHAHA ok, I didn't know if I could put the hospital on here. It was Houston County Hospital in Warner Robins, GA. This was just the pediatrics ward, however I am guessing they extend this to the whole hospital. I refused the food until I got so hungry I HAD to eat something (kids can't be left alone so I had no choice). I am SO thankful they were so willing to work with me, because I was a mess between my husband being deployed, my kid being sick and me having bronchitis. The dietician went out of her way to help me.

You poor thing! Doing this while your husband is away must be so hard. HUGS

It really was, my poor kid was so sick and no one could tell me what was wrong with him...in addition to having almost NO food with me when he was admitted because it was so quick...I pretty much starved the first day, living off of Larabars and water. My husbands red cross call didn't go through and so I was essentially totally alone for about 4 hours...and then one well meaning nurse brought me chickfila on her break and I had to tell her I couldn't eat it (she somehow missed my bracelet). I was SO tempted to eat it anyway LOL.

I made it though. He made it. I didn't get glutened or CC'd even though he was on a normal diet. And he seems to be feeling better.

Oh man. I can't imagine. My son was a premie and so so sick all the time for the first couple of years. We made so many hospital and ER trips and it was exhausting. That was before diagnosis but I still starved sometimes just because there wasn't food around.

In general with pharmaceutical products cross-contamination is a much lower risk.

Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

Just so you'll know, once you have been gluten-free for any length of time, it will invalidate testing for celiac disease.

Yes. I have not been tested for celiac. It took forever to get diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. lol. I have an appointment with my regular GP later this month and will convey my findings on improved symptoms and see what his thoughts are. Thank you.

@Grahamsnaturalworld, It's never too late.   Have you been checked for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth?  SIBO can cause ongoing symptoms.  Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and Histamine Intolerance (HIT) can also be the cause of ongoing symptoms.  The AIP diet can help with these by starving out SIBO bacteria and calming the immune system. Do you include dairy in your diet?  Casein in dairy can cause an autoimmune response the same as to gluten.  Have you been checked for lactose intolerance?  Some people lose the ability to produce the enzyme, lactase, needed to digest lactose, the sugar in dairy because the villi where the lactase enzyme is made are damaged.  AIP diet excludes dairy. Do you include grains in your diet?  Gluten free alternative grains and ancient grains can be inflammatory and cause symptoms.  Some people with Celiac react to corn and oats.  The AIP diet excludes all grains.  Lectins in grains can be inflammatory and cause symptoms. Do you eat nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant).  This family of plants produce glycoalkaloids, chemicals that promote Leaky Gut Syndrome.  The AIP diet excludes nightshades.   Are you on any medications?  Some medications can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.  Do you take any supplements?  Some herbal teas and supplements can cause digestive symptoms.  Medications for diabetes, antidepressants, and other pharmaceuticals can cause digestive symptoms as side effects. Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Malabsorption of essential nutrients can occur with continued symptoms.  Deficiencies in Niacin, Thiamine, and other B vitamins can cause digestive symptoms.  Gastrointestinal Beriberi and Pellagra are often overlooked by doctors because they are not familiar with nutritional deficiency disease symptoms.  Nutritional deficiencies can worsen over time as stores inside the body are depleted.   Have your doctors checked for all these?   I had a horrible time getting my symptoms under control.  I had to answer all these questions myself.  Yes, it's frustrating and exasperating because doctors don't have to live with these symptoms everyday.
