Symtoms Not Going Away

I was diagnosed two months ago and my only symptom was a distended abdomen. I have been very strict with my gluten free diet. I have been careful about cross-contamination and everything. My belly has not gone down at all and i'm wondering if that is normal or if I should assume that something else is causing it or if there is something in my diet that isn't gluten that could be causing it.

It can take months to get better. It was 6 months before I had one symptom free day.

what about beauty products? Shampoo runs down your face in the shower, soaps and creams get on your hands. If your products have wheat (never found any with barley or rye) then you are getting glutened still.

A week ago i went through and found that a lot of my hair products had wheat in them so i got new ones. I guess I'm just confused because I thought the swelling in my belly was from my intestines being inflamed and I thought that once all the gluten got out that there wouldn't be any inflammation any more.

Back when they were trying to diagnose me I had to fast for a day to get an abdominal ct scan and the swelling went away completely but then came back right away (the first thing i had to eat after was pasta) so I know that it CAN go away pretty quick.

When I called my Dr. they acted like it wasn't normal for me to still be having any swelling. They recommended gas pills, which did nothing, then they said they might want to put me on antibiotics but i was already on lots of different kinds when they were trying to diagnose me originally so I don't really want to have to do that again (I really hate pills and already did it 3 times before). My family Dr. put me on reglan which did nothing, i guess to see if my stomach was emptying normally. I guess it was.

Do you have acid reflux or did your doctor check you for acid issues? Since I was diagnosed, I've been going through issues with bloating and a little reflux that my GI doctor said wasn't at all unusual. Acid problems can cause bloating.

I haven't had any as far as i know, but should i try something like an antacid?

You are only 2 months into the diet and that's not a very long time. I would check all your products and then give it time. You also might want to try eliminating a couple of other foods people tend to have trouble with, namely dairy and soy. If you get better after a couple of weeks add one back in at a time and see which ones causes you trouble. It's very common for celiacs to have trouble digesting dairy and soy too because our intestines are so messed up.

      @N00dnutt, been there, done that! Cheers!

      @trents You're right, thanks for pointing that out. On @somethinglikeolivia comment regarding potential ingesting or cross contamination; there is a product marketed in Australia as "GluteGuard" which is designed for just this scenario. It is not a defence for and is not recommended for use by full-blown celiac disease but, it helps those with GI. I'll be reading slower in future so I don't skim over the subject matter. Cheers.

      @Knitty_Kitty Noted with appreciation.

      @N00dnutt, as OP explained earlier, she had a gastroscopy done earlier while she had been eating plenty of gluten for months. It was negative despite strong positive antibody scores.

      The best way to determine positively is to undergo a Gastroscope. Your Endocrinologist will assess the condition of your "Villi". These tenticles are what extract the nutrient from what we ingest. The Protein in Gluten is like acid to these tenticles.
