Last week I bought shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion from a company called "Green Beaver". They are located in Canada, but will ship to the US. They also don't contain harmful chemicals. We tried the Apple Mint and they are WONDERFUL and gluten-free is written right on the bottle.

Do you think it matters if your skin products are gluten-free, if you don't have DH?

Dixiebell Contributor

The problem some people have is that their shampoo or conditioner can get into their mouth while washing their hair. Lotion that has gluten in it can get on your food or in your mouth. Lipstick or make-up can get in your mouth.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm always looking for new gluten-free products to try out.

I think it depends on how sensitive you are, I think I am on the more sensitive side....and so I cannot ingest gluten, or have it on my skin. If any shampoo, hair product, or lotion has any gluten in it, I will break out overnight. Which could be more of a wheat allergy symptom....all I know is that i have to stay away from anything to do with wheat/gluten! ;0

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
