Question For Those Who've Taken Clomid

I am somewhat self diagnosed celiac. My blood test was negative but while waiting for the results my doc told me to give gluten free a shot. Amazing difference & the 2 times I have accidentally gotten glutened I had bad reactions.

It's only been about 11 weeks since I've been gluten free but I was already having some obvious female issues. We started trying to have our 2nd child in July so my OB already had started me on a plan. I took birth control for about 2 months to try & get my hormones back to a normal level & then started clomid. First cycle I didn't even come close to ovulating. Second cycle I did ovulate but my levels weren't what the doctor wanted to see so now that I've just started my cycle again I'll be taking 150mg of clomiphene a day. The doc said it's a really high dose but he wants to try it for 1 cycle & see how I do. He warned me that I would probably be a lot more tender & have more pain.

1st cycle I had a little pain, this cycle almost none. What I have seemed to notice though, & I'm wondering if anyone else experienced this, is that my periods seem to get worse with each cycle. I never used to have much cramping most of the time but now I feel completely miserable, at times it comes close to the stomach pain I used to get from gluten. I've also noticed I seem to spot for a day or two & then get hit full force with cramps & heavy flow.

I'm curious to know if anyone else has had similar experiences. Also for those who did take clomid, I'm curious how long were you on it before you got pregnant? Oh also he has me taking 850mg of metformin a day too. Apparently they use that for fertility now too.

Yes. It was years ago and I don't remember my dosages. I was diagnosed with endometriosis prior to persuing infertility treatment. I ovulated on my own, but we were trying to stimulate multiple folicle production. I had had a laparoscopy to remove the endometriosis some time before the clomid, and my periods were manageable with ibuprofin and vicoden. After the clomid, the periods were MUCH worse and stayed that way. I had to move up to percocet and eventually a second laparoscopy. The second laparoscopy wasn't a surprise for me, but I think if I hadn't taken the clomid, I would have been able to delay that surgery for a while longer.

A bit of good news is that while the clomid didn't work for me and we were sent on to IVF with egg donation, after my celiac diagnosis and a period of recovery, I got pregnant spontaneously. Hubby had really bad numbers too, so this was a great surprise. Hopefully your diagnosis and gluten-free diet will speed the process along and make it nice and inexpensive for you.

Hi Laennie - I am currently on Clomid (100 mg) and this is my fifth course. I have always had really painful periods, but they do seem to be even crampier on Clomid (waking me up in the middle of the night, for instance). I also spot for about half a day before the full period starts, which was new for me.

Hopefully what you'll find is that going gluten-free will help with your fertility issues. I know a number of people have had success getting pregnant after following a strict gluten-free diet (it may take a few months). In my situation, I haven't had trouble ovulating but the doctor wants to increase the odds of pregnancy, hence the Clomid. My husband has some male factor issues that we're trying to overcome.

Thanks for the info. I have been a bit distracted the last week & a half. Ended up catching pneumonia & I'm finally back up & running around this week.

I should be ovulating in the next day or two now. This cycle my doc decided to move me up to 150mg to try it. He warned me I would be more tender etc because we're really overstimulating the ovaries. I am noticing that tenderness already. I really, really hope I get pregnant this time because I'm really dreading a period after this lol. I'm just a little worried because I've been on antibiotics of one kind or another pretty much since I started taking the clomid & yesterday, after 12 days of antibiotics I'm finally done. No one could tell us if the antibiotics might lessen the effectiveness of the clomid etc. I'm thinking it might not really since I've noticed tenderness the last few days.

This will also be my 3rd full cycle gluten free so hopefully that will help. My fear initially was that going gluten free I'd magically be better & taking the clomid would just end up with me being like octo-mom or something lol. So far even with the clomid things have not been too much better but with taking this high of a dose this cycle, my husband & I are definitely having that fear lol.

Hey Laennie, I am coeliac and we struggled for 5 years to have children. Ectopics and miscarriages. Put on clomid for a year and was in hospital every time I ovulated and had my period. Never had pain for them before. They told us ivf but we didn’t agree for that after only 1 year. All the health issues I had just kept getting worse . I started going gluten free and that seemed to help but found that there were some gluten-free products that still made me sick. We removed all lactose and stopped eating anything that was on my list of possible things that could affect me. This includes things like maltodextrin monoglycerides etc. Coeliac to me does just mean gluten free. I eat only fresh produce and try to make the rest myself. You really should get tested. Even if it is negative it will most likely mean you are non coeliac gluten sensitivity. Either way the diet should be the same (we have both in my family as it is heredity).  So where am I going with all this???? After seven months of only fresh produce, alll health issues went away, even ones from birth that they couldn’t explain. My teeth are no longer see through looking as the enamel is coming back. ASO, they said it couldn’t happen naturally but I am also 11 weeks pregnant. Just like that. I swear by it. I would recommend you see a doctor and dietician if you feel you are coeliac or NCGS. Hope this helps.       @BlessedinBoston, it is possible that in Canada the product in question is formulated differently than in the USA or at least processed in in a facility that precludes cross contamination. I assume from your user name that you are in the USA. And it is also possible that the product meets the FDA requirement of not more than 20ppm of gluten but you are a super sensitive celiac for whom that standard is insufficient.

      No,Lindt is not gluten free no matter what they say on their website. I found out the hard way when I was newly diagnosed in 2000. At that time the Lindt truffles were just becoming popular and were only sold in small specialty shops at the mall. You couldn't buy them in any stores like today and I was obsessed with them 😁. Took me a while to get around to checking them and was heartbroken when I saw they were absolutely not gluten free 😔. Felt the same when I realized Twizzlers weren't either. Took me a while to get my diet on order after being diagnosed. I was diagnosed with small bowel non Hodgkins lymphoma at the same time. So it was a very stressful time to say the least. Hope this helps 😁.

      @Jmartes71, I understand your frustration and anger.  I've been in a similar situation where no doctor took me seriously, accused me of making things up, and eventually sent me home to suffer alone.   My doctors did not recognize nutritional deficiencies.  Doctors are trained in medical learning institutions that are funded by pharmaceutical companies.  They are taught which medications cover up which symptoms.  Doctors are required to take twenty  hours of nutritional education in seven years of medical training.  (They can earn nine hours in Nutrition by taking a three day weekend seminar.)  They are taught nutritional deficiencies are passe' and don't happen in our well fed Western society any more.  In Celiac Disease, the autoimmune response and inflammation affects the absorption of ALL the essential vitamins and minerals.  Correcting nutritional deficiencies caused by malabsorption is essential!  I begged my doctor to check my Vitamin D level, which he did only after making sure my insurance would cover it.  When my Vitamin D came back extremely low, my doctor was very surprised, but refused to test for further nutritional deficiencies because he "couldn't make money prescribing vitamins.". I believe it was beyond his knowledge, so he blamed me for making stuff up, and stormed out of the exam room.  I had studied Nutrition before earning a degree in Microbiology.  I switched because I was curious what vitamins from our food were doing in our bodies.  Vitamins are substances that our bodies cannot manufacture, so we must ingest them every day.  Without them, our bodies cannot manufacture life sustaining enzymes and we sicken and die.   At home alone, I could feel myself dying.  It's an unnerving feeling, to say the least, and, so, with nothing left to lose, I relied in my education in nutrition.  My symptoms of Thiamine deficiency were the worst, so I began taking high dose Thiamine.  I had health improvement within an hour.  It was magical.  I continued taking high dose thiamine with a B Complex, magnesium. and other essential nutrients.  The health improvements continued for months.  High doses of thiamine are required to correct a thiamine deficiency because thiamine affects every cell and mitochondria in our bodies.    A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function.  The cerebellum of the brain is most affected.  The cerebellum controls things we don't have to consciously have to think about, like digestion, balance, breathing, blood pressure, heart rate, hormone regulation, and many more.  Thiamine is absorbed from the digestive tract and sent to the most important organs like the brain and the heart.  This leaves the digestive tract depleted of Thiamine and symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi, a thiamine deficiency localized in the digestive system, begin to appear.  Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Beriberi include anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, Gerd, acid reflux, gas, slow stomach emptying, gastroparesis, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation, incontinence, abdominal pain, IBS,  SIBO, POTS, high blood pressure, heart rate changes like tachycardia, difficulty swallowing, Barrett's Esophagus, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Doctors are only taught about thiamine deficiency in alcoholism and look for the classic triad of symptoms (changes in gait, mental function, and nystagmus) but fail to realize that gastrointestinal symptoms can precede these symptoms by months.  All three classic triad of symptoms only appear in fifteen percent of patients, with most patients being diagnosed with thiamine deficiency post mortem.  I had all three but swore I didn't drink, so I was dismissed as "crazy" and sent home to die basically.   Yes, I understand how frustrating no answers from doctors can be.  I took OTC Thiamine Hydrochloride, and later thiamine in the forms TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and Benfotiamine to correct my thiamine deficiency.  I also took magnesium, needed by thiamine to make those life sustaining enzymes.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins, so the other B vitamins must be supplemented as well.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.   A doctor can administer high dose thiamine by IV along with the other B vitamins.  Again, Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine should be given if only to rule Gastrointestinal Beriberi out as a cause of your symptoms.  If no improvement, no harm is done. Share the following link with your doctors.  Section Three is especially informative.  They need to be expand their knowledge about Thiamine and nutrition in Celiac Disease.  Ask for an Erythrocyte Transketolace Activity test for thiamine deficiency.  This test is more reliable than a blood test.       I have been diagnosed with celiac in 1994, in remission not eating wheat and other foods not to consume  my household eats wheat.I have diagnosed sibo, hernia ibs, high blood pressure, menopause, chronic fatigue just to name a few oh yes and Barrett's esophagus which i forgot, I currently have bumps in back of my throat, one Dr stated we all have bumps in the back of our throat.Im in pain.Standford specialist really dismissed me and now im really in limbo and trying to get properly cared for.I found a new gi and new pcp but its still a mess and medical is making it look like im a disability chaser when Im actively not well I look and feel horrible and its adding anxiety and depression more so.Im angery my condition is affecting me and its being down played

      Wondering if anyone knows whether Lindt chocolate balls are gluten free. The Lindt Canadian website says yes but the Lindt USA website says no. The information is a bit confusing.
