Hives?

Fort Mac Celiac

Fort Mac Celiac Newbie

Hi everyone! I am new to this forum.

I have been breaking out in hives about 2x/day for the past 6 months - once so severely that I ended up in the ER. After alot of online research I decided to try an elimination diet and this led me to believe that I am sensitive to gluten.

Small amounts of gluten don't cause any reaction at all, medium amounts (ie eating a sandwich, pasta side dish) cause me to bloat and break out in hives (this is easily taken care of with Benedryl) and larger amounts cause the more typical reations I have been reading about (severe abdominal pain, vomiting, etc).

I haven't seen a dr yet - but I intend to. I am a bit hesitant since I live in a small town and I am not sure the drs here have alot of experience with Celiac.

I just wanted to ask if anyone has or has had hives as their primary symptom?

Thanks!

Hi and Welcome!

During your doctors appointment, I would recommend that you request a FULL Celiac Panel. You may have Celiac as well as a gluten allergy.

Happyw5 Explorer

I have been breaking out in hives for a while. I have had many other digestive issues and so on. My celiac panel was negative, but I was positive for a wheat allergy. My dr also suggested that breaking out with hives could be from high antibodies to your thyroid. Well mine was positive for high antibodies (different test than just thyroid)I am not taking medicine yet, we are hoping that being off gluten for a while will help with my thyoid... But I would ask to have a complete thyroid panel run..

I have one IRL Celiac friend, and hives are her primary symptom. So the short answer is YES. Definitely.

And it isn't anything to take lightly - she told me that if you have hives and you get chilled, your blood pressure can drop dangerously.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.
