Today is one year since being diagnosed Celiac and it's all finally starting to fall into place and become more comfortable. And... this has been an entire week of feeling good - no bad days this week. Yeah.

Congratulations! You're past the hardest times, and soon all of the things that seemed so difficult about this diet will be so routine you won't even notice until someone asks you to go out to eat. I'm going on 7 years and I still keep count. Isn't it nice to feel better?

I did not believe those who told me that within a year I would be managing this disease with some sort of ease. It does get easier. It does get better. And month by month I feel better. There are times for sure when it is a few steps back but over all - gluten free is good!

Congratulations Cap6!

That's great! I'm so glad you're feeling better! I too, didn't believe everyone when they told me I would feel better in a year or so. It seemed like it took forever for my body to heal and every morning I would wake up feeling the same. It's definitely not something that can be cured over night. Now, I feel great! I do get the occasional mild gluten reactions when I eat some "gluten free" processed products, but other then that I feel great! Gluten free for 17 months! I wish I was diagnosed with this a long time ago -it would have saved me from so many health problems! Now, I never get a sinus infection or bronchitis- I was getting them 4 times a year for the last twenty years. It used to take me a month to recover and I had so many other health problems. I think I had one cold in the last 17 months & it was gone in 5 days! It's amazing! ;)

I do feel for the people who have been misdiagnosed with other diseases and actually have undiagnosed celiac disease. I do try to spread the word to my family & friends, but a lot of people just don't want to hear it.

Happy Healing! :)

That's great Cap! I'm so glad you haven't gotten a cold in a whole year! That's awesome! I think it's because our bodies were so busy fighting the gluten all the time that it couldn't fight off colds and other infections. Also we weren't absorbing vitamins, nutrients and minerals as well as we are now. I know I've had to decrease my thyroid hormone dose to almost half the amount since going gluten free. So just image that my body wasn't absorbing almost half of what I was eating. That's probably true for a lot of us.

Did you try to drink more water and add more fruit to your diet for the big "C" your having? I've that problem too, but if I add more fruit and water to my diet it helps a lot. Also exercise helps, too - just walking will help. ;)

I drink almost a gallon of water a day. Cart my jug everywhere with me. And a lot of fruit & veggies. Walking hasn't been top on my list but it about to advance!!

I relate the to "no cold" thing too. I used to get two horrible colds a year. I haven't had one in eighteen months.

I relate to the "C" too. This is the world's best natural gluten-free intervention when you can't poop, and feel cruddy.

Heat 2 oz. of Prune Juice. Drink it, then heat about a tablespoon of honey, in water, (make a honey tea), and drink it. Hope that helps. (It usually takes 2-3 hours.)

Marilyn ~ ahh, I tried that for 2 weeks and not a single change. Blah! That stuff is nasty! I thought cold prune juice was bad... but warm??? Blaaah!!

Angie ~ congrats to you too! :)

Are you consuming soy products? I ask because soy does that to me. It binds me up for days with gas and stomach pain and 'relief' is not pleasent. If you do consume soy you might try eliminating it and see if it helps. Also are you having pain, bloating etc with the C? If not and the C means you just go like every other day that could be the norm for your body.

goofed on the last post...

Ravenwood - No soy in the diet. you are the one (thank you!!!) who told me that Burt's Bees has soy and that is what was probably what was making my lips break out. (it was!) I cut out all soy as figured if it made my lips bad it could be hurting something else.

As for the regular thing - well, we're talking up to 3 or 4 days & by then I am in misery. I found a tea, Smooth Move (what a name lol ) that helps but the dr isn't real happy about me taking it regular as it is a laxative. sigh!!!

As long as you are watching for any bad side effects and aware of possible contraindications IMHO it isn't going to do you any harm. It is in many script or OTC drugs for constipation. Here is some info on it from the NIH along with a list of script and OTC drugs that have senna in it. Do you like sweet potatoes or yams? If you do you could try some baked or boiled every day or two and see if that helps. Oriental medicine uses them as a bowel regualtor as they contain both soluable and insoluable fiber.

Thanks - at this point I'll try anything. If I could drink warm prune juice (blaah!)then you know I'll try anything!

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
