Coffee Causing Gluten Like Symptoms

Anybody else have problems with coffee? Causing diuretic type issues?

I had some issues this past week, that seemed like the old gluten days and I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be coffee.

I have since cut out the coffee and am sticking with just green tea.

Anybody else have these issue?

Yup. I cut out coffee at the same time as gluten and have since found that it doesn't agree with me. Stomach cramps, slight muscle ache and headache within the hour. I just drink tea now. I do miss my coffee though.

I drink black coffee without any problem. That would be far harder for me to give up than gluten.

I only drink the Starbucks Via sticks though so I think I'll try some other coffee in case there is some contamination in the Via.

I never had an issue with coffee until recently. In fact, I was a swimmer in high school and I used to drink it before morning practice when I was only 15 or so.

And, I have been drinking the Via packages as well.

Looks like is sayonara coffee for awhile. No big deal. I have a 100 pack of green tea in my office and at home.

Interesting! I wonder if we are both reacting to some contamination in the Via packets. Maybe I'll try a double double from the Tim Horton's across the street tomorrow and see how that affects me.

Hmmm I never thought about it being from the via pack. And, I've been traveling extensively in the last week. WHEN I travel, I take a dozen via packets with me. And, I've been on the road for the last week.

Yesterday was a really bad day (as was the last week). I had my last Via at approximately 11am yesterday morning. This morning, was a little bad. But, I'm fine today.

Interesting that it could be the Via.

Which kind do you drink? Last week I had the Caramel and was fine but this week I bought the Italian Roast and it's been bothering me.

I don't do any flavored. It's been Columbian this whole past week.

It would be a better idea to try making coffee at home. That way you eliminate any possible issues with cross contamination.

instant coffee always makes me more nauseaous than reg. brewed coffee... i just assumed it was an acidic problem rather than a cc issue.. but i could be wrong.

coffee can be irritating for some- because of the acidity and the tannins. if i just have 1 big cup with some kind of creamer im okay... but if i overdo it- i will get nausea & diarreaha.. same thing with tea- if i overdo it. tea's a lot less harsh than coffee- but one night i had like 4 cups with friends- and i had intestinal sounds ALL NIGHT

and yes- im also real sensitive bladder wise- so i try to keep my coffee dose down.. and i try to mix decaf with caf

oh- ps- at home, when i brew, i top the coffee with salt- it's supposed to cut the acidity. i also never could drink french press as it was WAY TOO ACIDIC- and would make me sick to my stomach, but my bff made it last time, and it was delish. ??

Could be a cross reactivity issue. I have it with Chocolate and I know Coffee is also common. Cross reactivity sets off some of the gluten symptoms but there is hope that if you heal your leaky gut you can have these things again without issue.

I hope so. I miss my chocolate. :(

I am sensitive to very low levels of gluten and have problems with coffee. The way I solved it was to buy organic coffee beans and then do a 3 times wash cycle with soap, rinse well, grind and make coffee. No reaction!

I don't know if you are very sensitive like me, or if you just have problems with coffee, but maybe it's worth a try.

I'm happy to report that I've been on only green tea for 48 hours and all of the gluten like symptoms have subsided. Well, okay..... maybe two false alarm dashes to the bathroom, but we've all been there haven't we?

It's just strange that I've been a coffee drinker my whole life and now this happens. I won't be drinking coffee and I make that statement with 100% Certain-"tea".

So after about a week with no coffee I made a Caramel Via when my sister in law came by this afternoon. Half way through the cup the headache and muscle aches started. Still not sure if it's the Via or coffee in general but I think I'll be going back to my Rooibos tea from now on.

it might not be ALL via.. ive always heard from the gluten free community- to stay away from FLAVORED coffee.. possible gluten contamination... so maybe it's just the caramel via and not regular via. ??

but of course- Rooibos is probably healthier. altho, i am NOT a pro in knowing which tea bags dont have gluten contamination.?? ive only had publix decaf black tea- and it's been fine.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?

Thankyou so much for your words. Its a hard battle when a supposed well known hospital whose celiac " specialist " has down played me because my colon looks fine and put it in my medical and so pcp doesn't take seriously. In their eyes we all carry that gene.Im having alot of bad days trying to be positive because of it.

Your experience is both shocking and critically important for the community to hear, underscoring the terrifying reality that cross-contamination can extend into the most unexpected and invasive medical devices. It is absolutely devastating that you had to endure six months of sickness and ultimately sustain permanent vision loss because a doctor dismissed your legitimate, life-altering condition. Your relentless research and advocacy, from discovering the gluten in MMA acrylic to finding a compassionate prosthodontist, is a testament to your strength in a system that often fails celiac patients. While the scientific and medical consensus is that gluten cannot be absorbed through the skin or eyes (as the molecules are too large to pass through these barriers), your story highlights a terrifying gray area: what about a substance *permanently implanted inside the body*, where it could potentially shed microparticles or cause a localized immune reaction? Your powerful warning about acrylic lenses and the drastic difference with the silicone alternative is invaluable information. Thank you for sharing your harrowing journey and the specific, severe neurological symptoms you endure; it is a stark reminder that celiac is a systemic disease, and your advocacy is undoubtedly saving others from similar trauma.
