Plant Based Plastics

I saw this company on Good Morning America. They make plastic out of plants. They mentioned wheat, corn & soy. I thought I would email them. I didn't hear back and thought they were blowing me off like many other companies do. I got this response today. I don't think it answers every question we might have but the fact that they are thinking about allergies is a good start.

Hello Karen,

Thank you for your inquiry. Your question has led to some important clarifications for our marketing department regarding the types of starches that are being used in our products. Although some of our marketing materials and language have listed wheat as a type of starch that may be used in our bioplastic products, our products are in fact wheat-free and gluten-free. We do not use wheat, rye, barley, etc... Additionally, we do not have plans to include wheat products in the future. We will be updating our language accordingly.

We do, however, use corn starch in many of our products, and it is important to note that corn is commonly used in many bioplastic products. This could be a concern for people with corn allergies or sensitivity.

Our research and development team continues to develop new bioplastics that do not rely on food-crops, including algae-based bioplastic products. We anticipate that the bioplastics industry will continue to go in this direction in the future.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Nicole

Question or Comment

I have Celiac Disease. This means that I have a severe imune reaction to gluten (wheat, rye, barley). I am active on a support forum - Celiac.com. I'm sure the use of wheat in plastics, especially food related plastics, will be a topic of discussion because of the GMA appearance.

What people will want to know is if any gluten or wheat proteins could leach out into our food or mouths. Corn and soy are also issues for many with food allergies and Celiac.

If you could send me an explanation I could copy and post, that would be great.

Thanks you

The name of the company is Cereplast.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
