Hi, New With Symptom Q

Hi everyone :D

I'm Misa, 32 years old and live in Scandinavia. I've been doing a gluten-free diet for over a month now after self-diagnosing and I'm now convinced I'm on the right track. Chronic diarrhea, dizziness, digestive pains and cramps, candida, nausea and extremely low energy have already improved tremendously. My panick attacks have gone and general anxiety almost non-excistent (using L-glutamine and N-acetyl glucosamine for gut healing - a big help).

I've been reading up on your posts for the last month and a BIG thank you to everyone.....so many questions have been answered here in addition to my own research.

I have a question to something weird that happened yesterday and today. I accidentaly got glutened for the first time due to taking some herbs that contained "grain alcohol" and my anxiety returned with a vengance within half an hour (woke up this morning with diarrhea and cramps too). Could a gluten intolerance symptom surface so quickly after ingestion (1/2 hour)??? Or is this simply coincidence? Has anyone else experienced symptoms so quickly?

Again, thank you everyone so far, Misa :)

Hi Misa :)

Reactions can *absolutely* surface in as little as 1/2 an hour!! I react within 10 minutes of having ingested gluten. Usually, my first reaction is emotional. I know as soon as I start crying that something is up! If I've gotten a lot of gluten, I have a pretty severe GI reaction within 30 minutes.

Welcome to the forum :) One more nice person is always a bonus ;)

Everyone has a slightly different reaction, and it takes a different amount of time for everyone. But it is possible to have a reaction within an hour or less of consuming gluten.

God bless,

Yep, reaction times vary. I feel it right away and have a reaction that lasts about 2 weeks.

my reactions are almost instantaneous to eating something with gluten. If I am accidentally glutenened I can usually tell immediately. Anxiety attacks usually are the first sign, then cramping and the big D... like Kaiti said, symptoms for about 2 weeks after as well.

Wow, so many answers, THANX :D It's 04.22 o'clock at night over here and I woke up with a sweat and runny, itchy eyes. Two other gluten related symptoms gone on the gluten-free diet and thought I'd check the board. Thank you Michelle, Mariann, Kaiti and Nini.......

I just assumed that it was the colon area which was sensitive to gluten, but getting reactions so fast means the glutenened "rollercoaster ride" actually can start in the stomach area ;)

As soon as I started visiting this board, I went super-strict gluten-free (followed everybody's guidelines) and thought I'd just grab this opportunity to say you guys have probably helped ALOT of people out there. Hey, even as far as Norway in Scandinavia = ME :P

C ya, Misa :)

I get anxiety attacks, too...they will even wake me up at night!

Sorry, I think I got you mixed up with another poster.

I hadn't been eating gluten free before having the antibody test done. I started eating gluten free after having the test done because the gastro PA told me to eat gluten-free for 6 months. I'm now 3 months in.

I tend to agree with RMJ. Your doc took the reasonable and practical approach to diagnosis. All things considered, it was the right way to go. However, if you have first degree relatives that show signs of possible celiac disease, urge them to get formally tested before they start the gluten free diet.

It sounds like you have a very reasonable GI doctor, who diagnosed you based on family history and symptoms after eating gluten. I would consider you lucky! The other option would be to make yourself very sick by doing weeks of a gluten challenge prior to an endoscopy.
