Does Anyone Know About Crampy Feelings That Don't Go Away, Feel Like Menstal Cramps?

I was diagnosed 3 months ago. I have ongoing cramps and nausia. The cramps are always dully there and kick up after I eat or later in the day. It is better on the gluton free diet, but I still have these symptoms. I've had some diarrhea this last week from eating out. I tried to be so careful. The gasto insists it is not intestinal, the cramps. He thinks it is ob. Ob doesn't have a clue. I'm just so discouraged. Have had cat scan and MRI. I'm still waiting to hear on MRI results from ob. I bet someone here knows more than the 3 Dr.s I working with. So could the gastro have missed something. Is this endo metriosis or who has an idea? Thanks.

What do you eat since going gluten free?

Have you made your kitchen gluten-free or at least made changes to avoid cross contamination (i.e. new toaster, new cuttign boards, new collander, new non-stick pans, separate prep stations for gluten food, etc?

Are you still feeding your kids gluten? Just making their food and then eating yours without washing hands can get you.

And when you say you "tried to be careful" when eating out what do you mean? Did you go to a place with a gluten free menu? Did you ask the manager/chef lots of questions about cc risks?

The waitress said they were familiar with cooking gluton free. It was a high end restaurant. Live and learn. Next time I will talk to the cook. I probably wont be eating out for a long time after that. I try to prepare my food on a plate. We don't have enough space for a separate cooking area. I was just thinking about the cleaning brush I use on dishes. How do I handle that? Do I get one for their dishes and my dishes. Should I designate them a pot and me a pot. How about cookie sheets. If I clean them out are they ok?

Do you have an idea what the pressure and crampy feeling is? Sometimes it feels like 4 months pregnant with a baby in there. I know I'm not pregnant. Lots of times feels like dental floss pulling up and wrapped around about at c-section line. Do you know anyone on here that may know this one?

Thanks so much.

If you notice it only after eating it may be related to gluten or it may be related to another food intolerance suach as dairy or soy. Is it only on one side? Does the pain move ever or is it always in the same place? Did they do an ultrasound to check for cysts on your ovaries? I had a large cyst on one of my ovaries but it only caused me pain during a certain time in my monthly cycle. It was only on one side though and the pain was always in the same place. So I was sure it was not directly caused by what I was eating. However, the cyst no longer gives me pain since going gluten-free. I have to go back and have another ultrasound in a few months to find out if it has shrunk. I can't say whether you have the same thing or not. The best thing would be to ask your drs for an ultrasound if it keeps giving you pain.

ETA: oh yeah get yourself a new brush and use it only for gluten-free dishes only. If you are hand washing everything it is going to be very difficult for you to eat safely. Be sure you wear dish gloves when doign the Gluteny dishes--or make someone els eint he family do them. Use foil or parchment paper to cover your old cookie sheets when making gluten-free cookies or other food. They are pretty close to impossible to scrub clean. If your pans are all stainless steel you can scrub them (with a clean scrush brush) but you will need to clean them really well everytime you make pasta or soemthign with gluten. It would be best to have your own if you can. Some people put colored tape on the handles tell apart the gluten-free pots and the non-gluten-free pots.

I had an internal ultrasound which showed the uterus and said he couldn't see anything overly unusual. Not sure if it showed the intestines. I also had a round of abdominal wall shots to see if that would help? It helped some. The pain was located on the left mostly, but now is mostly in the center right at the c-section line. Today it is more of a pressure than a pain. When I do hard exercise, the pain seems to be worse. I have my apt to go over the MRI results this Friday.

I'm going to ask a funny question. My husband eats a huge bowl of cereal every morning. It is all wheat and lots or bread, pasta. Here is my question. Could having intimate times gluten me? Is this a question worth asking the gastro Dr.? I know teenagers are soaking tampons in alchohol and getting drunk. It is worse than drinking it. They almost die. If the area can absorb things so fast and stronly, could I be getting glutoned by my husband?

Um ew. Yes your husband should brush his teeth really well before being, um intimate in any way. Kissing him is for sure off limits. Another somewhat um delicate thing to consider is if he eats a sandwich then goes to pee he probably is not washing his hands before touching himself. At most he might wash them after. But he has just put gluten traces on his privates and well if you are later in that vicinity. Yeah it could get you. So you may need to teach him some really, really good personal hygiene--always washing his hands after eating and brushign his teeth relasly well too.

I'm also 3 months in and have the same issue with cramps. They definitely feel more menstrual than stomach, but they happen even when I'm mid-cycle.

Not sure if it's celiac related or not. My family has a pretty strong history of GYN problems, so I hesitate to blame it on celiac.

I've had these pains for years. They started in my belly and now can be anywhere from my ears to my hips. It feels like someone is starting to step on me and they get heavier and heavier.

Sunshine79 Rookie

I have the same pains. These pains are actually responsible for my Celiac diagnosis. I've had a CT, a transvaginal ultra sound, exploratory surgery (not doing that again), and upper endoscoy and a colonoscopy all within one month. They found nothing but the Celiac disease. That's it. Since going gluten free (a month or so ago) I still have these pains and sometimes thay get really bad but I do feel that they are calming down as bit! I hope you get better soon!

I get severe menstrual like crampy pains whenever I consume dairy products. (I have an ELISA blood test diagnosed allergy to casein.) I also get those pains somewhat, after I consume soy. I don't have any GYN problems and I menopaused 14 years ago (no more periods). So whenever I get those pains I assume I've accidentally consumed some dairy or soy.

If you're abstaining from gluten and still get those crampy pains, consider getting blood tests for other delayed reaction (IgG or IgA mediated) allergies.

mommyto2kids Collaborator

Sunshine how did they know it was not ob? And what is the IgG or IgA mediated allergies test? I don't know what that is.

If you've got a shared house, you need to be really strict about contamination before assuming it's not gluten. If you're still eating dairy, know that lactose intolerance's primary symptoms are significant bloating (which causes intestinal cramping as the gas tries to move through your system) and flatulence (which may come out "slowly" enough to not perceive unique farts :P).

could be your gallbladder or appindex acting upi (just to throw a new idea in the pot)

They checked everything OB-wise from the outside in. They did everything they could do outside then they went in and looked at everything inside. They only made one small incision but it took forever to feel better from that. I looked like I was 8 months pregnant after surgery and the bloating didn't go away for a long time. They came up with nothing except my bowel was enlarged and from there they sent me to the gastro idiot who diagnosed me with Celiac and then still didn't do anything for me...Oh and I had already had my gallbladder out 10 years ago...they KNEW it wasn't my appendix because they practically held it in their hands.

Welcome to the forum, @Ben98! If you have been consciously or unconsciously avoiding gluten because of the discomfort it produces then it is likely that your blood antibody testing for celiac disease has been rendered invalid. Valid testing requires regular consumption of generous amounts of gluten. The other strong possibility is that you have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but does not have the autoimmune component and thus does not damage the small bowel lining. It is 10x mor common than celiac disease. There is currently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. Some experts in the field believe it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Having one or both of the primary genes for developing celiac disease does not imply that you will develop active celiac disease. It simply establishes the potential for it. About 40% of the population has the genetic potential but only about 1% develop active celiac disease.

TTG blood test and total IGA tested on many occasions which have always remained normal, upper GI pain under my ribs since 2022. I had an endoscopy in 2023 which showed moderate gastritis. no biopsy’s were taken unfortunately. genetic test was positive for HLADQ2. extreme bloating after eating gluten, it’ll feel like I’ve got bricks in my stomach so uncomfortably full. the pain is like a dull ache under the upper left almost like a stitch feeling after a long walk. I am just wanting some advice has anyone here experienced gastritis with a gluten issue before? thank you

"Conclusions: The urinary iodine level was significantly lower in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and iodine replacement may be important in preventing osteoporosis"  Body iodine status in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis Low iodine can cause thyroid problems, but Iodine deficiency will not show up in thyroid tests.  Iodine is important for healing, its job is to kill off defective and aging cells (Apoptosis). Skin, brain fog, nails, muscle tone all inproved when I started taking 600 mcg (RDA 150 - 1000 mcg) of Liquid Iodine drops. Some with dermatitis herpetiformis, Iodine exacerbates the rash.  I started at 1 drop (50 mcg) and worked up to 12 drops, but I don't have dermatitis herpetiformis.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶
