Glutened Over And Over Again...

This past weekend my husband and I went up north to a lodge with my mother-in-law and other family. It was something my MIL invited us to, and from the beginning, I hadn't really wanted to go. Meals were included, so of course I was nervous. I was feeling a bit better after speaking with the chef the week before and it sounded like they knew what they were doing and would have lots of gluten-free food available. Everything was going well until last night....two hours after dinner the telltale stomach ache started. And then, because I wasn't feeling well today, I drank some Tazo ginger tea. Two cups of it. Then realized its not gluten free. And two days before leaving for the lodge I"d only just started feeling better after a month of being sick from the last glutening (it takes at least a month for my body to get back to normal after gluten). I'm so frustrated and annoyed with the situation since now I'm facing at least 4-6 weeks of feeling sick. I used to be so careful. I got careless and now I'm paying the price. AAAAAHHHHHH Sorry, no real point to this post. I just needed to vent.

I am so sorry you are feeling badly. I've been through the same thing before and it's really frustrating because it also takes me 4-6 weeks to recover. But you have to remember that you are human and not perfect and sometimes you are going to make mistakes. Sometimes others are going to make mistakes and it will cost you too. It TOTALLY sucks but it's something we need to sort of accept and deal with as best we can. Don't kick yourself about the past. The only thing you can do now is love yourself and take as good care of yourself as you possibly can. Take it easy for a while to let your body get better. If you can afford to baby yourself with a spa treatment or massage or something extra nice right up front, I highly recommend it. Even if you can't afford anything, find a few really nice free things to do for yourself in the next few days. You deserve it for all the times that you never thought about where you were successful in staying healthy. The stress and negativity of kicking yourself about it will just make it harder to recover. So go start babying yourself!!! :)

I'm in the same boat. My hubbie and I went out for our anniversary over the weekend and I got contaminated. We both double checked that the food I ordered was gluten-free, but something inside was telling me not to trust it. I didn't listen and ate it. I could tell before I even left the table that I was in trouble. This is my first major contamination since going gluten-free 8 months ago so I have no idea how long I'm going to feel bad. I can definitely tell that the brain fog is clearing up, but my stomach is an absolute mess. Even drinking water is unpleasant. Hearing you say you're sick for a month or more scares me. I hope you and I both get better ASAP!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
