in need of hug!! started gluten free today for my 2 yr old who seems to understand and is being very brave..i however am having a tough time. we are going to have her all natural foods as much as possible, but we were looking for treats to keep at pre school for unannounced b'days, it ws hard enough with her anaphylactic milk and egg allergies, now this

i know it'll get easier as it did with her allergies and as i find recipes that are easy to adapt, but today has just been horrible

but on the plus side only one tantrum, no biting her sister and a generally much mre plesantkid

Oh, your poor wee one -- milk and egg allergies and celiac to boot :( Yes, it is going to be a tough regime to get adjusted to (and get her adjusted to). Definitely natural foods is the way to go, but I wouldn't have a clue about treats that can be kept on hand. Maybe something like Larabars (mainly nuts and dates) would work, although they are large for a wee one. Here are your {{{{{{hugs}}}}} as you go through the adaptation process of her diet. Hang in there -- it will, as you say, get easier as you adjust to it. :)

For treats at school check out products by a company called "Enjoy Life". All of their products are free of the 8 major allergens and gluten. So you can send them even if your school is nut free. Open Original Shared Link

Have you subscribed to "Living Without"? If not, I think you'll find it really helpful. Good luck to you. Is she allergic to egg yolk or white? The good thing is that most children grow out of egg allergies from what I've read.

I tried to hook you up with the peanut butter cookie recipe that just uses 1 cup PB, 1 cup sugar and 1 egg, but didn't see it with any egg substitues. It might be worth a whirl. Sending you hugs, good luck to you and your little one!

We are dairy, egg, soy, tree nut, peanut, palm/coconut and banana free because of ana food allergies and Celiac. It is possible! You can do this Mama!

Enjoy Life is awesome to start with! Also , we got DS one of these for school and those unannounced treat things that come up at school:

Call and talk to them and they'll put together a great treat bucket to keep at school ;)

Also, I baked up and frosted some allergy free cupcakes and asked if I could keep them in a tupperware in the staff lounge freezer. Is there a fridge/freezer at your daughter's preschool? Then the teacher just gets a cupcake for my son whenever there is a party.

Hugs, Mama!

We have been very happy with Orgran products. According to their site,

All Orgran products are Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Egg free, Yeast Free, GMO Free and Vegan

Orgran has a great big bag of little bags of cookies that we keep at school for our kids. I have a small Tupperware box that we keep in their classrooms that has a variety of safe stuff - candy, cookies, dried fruits, drinks (nut milks and juices).

Good luck in this transition period, and it does get easier! We are gluten, dairy, soy free here. :)

A fun treat can consist of a sliced banana with honey drizzled on top....or a frozen, chocolate-covered banana. Or frozen fruit bars that you've made yourself.

@Scott Adams That's actually exactly what I ended up asking for— vodka tonic with Titos.  I saw on their website that Tito's is certified gluten-free (maybe many of the clear vodkas are, I don't know, I just happened to look up Tito's in advance). I should have actually specified the 'splash' though, because I think with the amount of tonic she put in there, it did still end up fairly sweet.  Anyway, I think I've almost got this drink order down!

Be interesting to see the effects of dairy reintroduction with gluten. As well as milk protein sensitivity in and of itself the casein part particularly has been shown to mimic gluten in about 50% of celiacs. Keep us posted!

She has been dairy free for six years, so she’d already been dairy free for two years at her last testing and was dairy free for the entire gluten challenge this year as well (that had positive results). However, now that we’re doing another biopsy in six weeks, we decided to do everything we can to try to “see” the effects, so we decided this past week to add back in dairy temporarily for breakfast (milk and cereal combo like you said).

Hi Christiana, Many thanks for your response.  Interestingly, I too cannot eat wheat in France without feeling effects (much less than in the US, but won't indulge nonetheless).  I also understand children are screened for celiac in Italy prior to starting their education. Wise idea as it seems my grandson has the beginning symptoms (several celiacs in his dad's family), but parents continue to think he's just being difficult.  Argh.  There's a test I took that diagnosed gluten sensitivity in 2014 via Entero Labs, and am planning on having done again.  Truth be told, I'm hoping it's the bromine/additives/preservatives as I miss breads and pastas terribly when home here in the states!  Be well and here's to our guts healing ❤️

Lol that’s so true! Hope you get clarity, it’s tough when there’s doubt. There’s so much known about celiac disease with all the scientific research that’s been done so far yet practically and clinically there’s also so much unknown, still. Out of curiosity what’s her dairy consumption like? Even compared to early years to now? Has that changed? Calcium is dependent in the mechanism of antigen presenting cells in the gut. High calcium foods with gluten grains can initiate inflammation greater.  This is why breakfast cereals and milk combo long term can be a ticking time bomb for genetically susceptible celiacs (not a scientific statement by any means but my current personal opinion based on reasoning at present). Milk and wheat are the top culprits for food sensitivity. Especially in childhood. There are also patient cases of antibodies normalising in celiac children who had milk protein intolerance/ delayed type allergy. Some asymptomatic. There were a couple of cases of suspected celiacs that turned out to have milk protein intolerance that normalised antibodies on a gluten containing diet. Then there were others that only normalised antibodies once gluten and milk was eliminated. Milk kept the antibodies positive. Celiac disease is complicated to say the least.
