Lactose Or Casein?

Something just started bothering me again. I have not eaten out, and have been over anal about my meals. I'm assuming it's dairy. In 2007 I cut out all my dairy(lactose and casein) and egg. I felt great and lost a ton of weight. I dont drink milk(I use almond) and I use coconut milk coffee creamer. I cut cheese as well. Tonight I made wings for the football game. There was nothing on them but salt and pepper. I dipped them in ranch. My stomach is killing me, I have reflux and heartburn. For lunch I had a salad with ham turkey and roastbeef, with mayo, mustard, and vinegar(I know sounds gross. I miss the mayo and mustard more than I miss the bread)

Tomorrow I'm going to cut the dairy. Do I cut ALL dairy, including the "hidden" dairy( like listed in the allergen menu) or just the obvious milk and cheese?

Anyone know of a non dairy sour cream? I can't find the so delicious yogert anywhere. I really want to try it. I use earth balance butter.

In the Hidden Valley bottled Ranch dressing there are several things that could be an issue depending what you ahve problems with: soybean oil, egg yolk, nonfat buttermilk, soy, vinegar, xanthan gum. It makes my stomach sick, for me I think it is the xanthan gum.

I use Albertson's store brand dry ranch mixed with plain (not sweetened) Greek yogurt.

Mayo also has soybean oil, eggs and vinegar.

It could be the dairy but I would would wonder if soy, eggs or the xanthan gum could also be culprits.

test yourself with lactose-free dairy items to see. If the symptoms are entirely gastro, it could very well be lactose, but casein is a possibility too. if you have any neuro symptoms at all, casein is more likely.

Going back as long as I remember I have never eaten ranch dressing (after one trial :ph34r: ). Don't know why, don't care to know why. Never had it when I was growing up, don't need it now. Best Foods mayo used to be semi-okay when they made it with canola oil; now it's soybean oil. Now I have Alfa One mayo made with rice bran oil from Australia :) in the fridge. Don't use it a lot because I have weaned myself from mayo back to my Kiwi ways after all those California years. Hub still goes through a jar of Best Foods every week or two :blink:

With the dairy, I would cut out all obvious dairy and see how it goes. If you have to go farther, then you have to go farther. Have you tried making the SCD 24-hour yogurt? I do that in the U.S. by wrapping an electric heating pad around a plastic 1 litre jar of yogurt I have mixed up for 24 hours.

I'm cutting out a bunch of foods including dairy right now on the GAPS diet, but I'm not being OCD about it. I'm using ghee for frying because it has almost no casein, and I broke down at a coffee shop and had a little cream in my coffee yesterday. B)

I was figuring on going to "allergy diet" careful if I didn't start feeling better but it seems to be helping.

I can tell you from personal experience that casein-neuro/lactose-gastro is NOT true for everyone. I had stomach-aches from cow casein when I first went gluten-free. Goat or sheep dairy was not a problem so I know it wasn't lactose.

Check your almond milk! Ugh, I got hit yesterday and bad!! I'd bought almond milk before and was fine. This one had carrageenan in it, and talk about make me sick. I had trouble sleeping last nigh and my stomach feels a mess yet today.

It seems that since I've given up gluten, I'm more intolerant to dairy than I was! It really affects my sinus. I've been trying to cut it out. I tend to get anxiety attacks when I stop it. So right now, I'm taking two college courses and I can't afford to lose sleep due to anxiety.. so I'm cutting it down slowly...trying to wean myself. It's harder to get off dairy than it was quitting smoking 23 years ago!! :blink:

Ah, that makes more sense. Hard to figure how you could get neuro symptoms from lactose.

Yes, it's hard! Unfortunately that means we're getting the opiate-like effects. I had to cut out the cheese first, substituting with avocado or nuts. I ate smaller and smaller slices of cheese until I ran out. That got rid of most of the dairy I was eating. Then I finished off my coffee milk over the next few days and I was dairy-free.

I dipped them in ranch. ... not all dressings are gluten-free ..

ham turkey and roastbeef ... not all hams [processed meats] are gluten-free ..

mayo, mustard, and vinegar ... not all vinegars are gluten-free ..

      This article does not address migraines at all.  Yes, red wine and sulfites are often mentioned in connection with migraine triggers. With me, any kind of alcoholic beverage in very modest amounts will reliably produce a migraine. Nitrous oxide generators, which are vaso dialators, also will give me migraines reliably. So, I think most of my migraines are tied to fluctuations vascular tension and blood flow to the brain. That's why the sumatriptan works so well. It is a vaso constrictor.

      Excessive dietary tyrosine can cause problems.  Everything in moderation.   Sulfites can also trigger migraines. Sulfites are found in fermented, pickled and aged foods, like cheese.  Sulfites cause a high histamine release.  High histamine levels are found in migraine.  Following a low histamine diet like the low histamine Autoimmune Protocol diet, a Paleo diet, helps immensely.    Sulfites and other migraine trigger foods can cause changes in the gut microbiome.  These bad bacteria can increase the incidence of migraines, increasing histamine and inflammation leading to increased gut permeability (leaky gut), SIBO, and higher systemic inflammation.   A Ketogenic diet can reduce the incidence of migraine.  A Paleo diet like the AIP diet, that restricts carbohydrates (like from starchy vegetables) becomes a ketogenic diet.  This diet also changes the microbiome, eliminating the bad bacteria and SIBO that cause an increase in histamine, inflammation and migraine.  Fewer bad bacteria reduces inflammation, lowers migraine frequency, and improves leaky gut. Since I started following the low histamine ketogenic AIP paleo diet, I rarely get migraine.  Yes, I do eat carbs occasionally now, rice or potato, but still no migraines.  Feed your body right, feed your intestinal bacteria right, you'll feel better.  Good intestinal bacteria actually make your mental health better, too.  I had to decide to change my diet drastically in order to feel better all the time, not just to satisfy my taste buds.  I chose to eat so I would feel better all the time.  I do like dark chocolate (a migraine trigger), but now I can indulge occasionally without a migraine after.   Microbiota alterations are related to migraine food triggers and inflammatory markers in chronic migraine patients with medication overuse headache https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11546420/

      Then we would need to cut out all meat and fish as they are richer sources of tyrosine than nuts and cheese. Something else about certain tyrosine rich foods must be the actual culprit.
