Another Scalp Post!

Well I have seen posts that question whether contact with wheat products can give someone DH and frankly I just don't have time to do the research so I don't know what the arguments are pro/con. I didn't give it much thought really. I did notice that going gluten free gave me the glorious side effect of stopping my insane scalp itch (that was accompanied by little sores that scabbed over) that I never even thought were related to my diet, I just thought I had dandruff or something and nothing made it go away so I just learned to live with it. When I read about DH in association with gluten free diets I was convinced that that was the reason why my scalp itched so horribly and why it went away with the gluten free diet.

Then I bought some Potion 9, which I had used a lot in the past but coincidentally I had not used for a while when I went gluten free but recently bought it again because it is great at controlling my frizzy hair. THE ITCH AND SORES CAME BACK! But I didn't immediately associate it with the Potion 9, I thought maybe I was being cc'd at a low dose that wasn't giving me the dreaded D but causing the scalp itch to come back. But a post on here drove me to read the labels on my hair products and LO AND BEHOLD Potion 9 had wheat protein :( I stopped using it and what do you know? My scalp itch went away too! I don't know the mechanism but I guess it doesn't matter. Does anyone know of a good gluten free hair product that works like Potion 9? It works so well-I am so sad that it has wheat in it.

I am really amazed at this whole thing, if someone had told me this previously I would have thought they were nuts but I can't argue with the results. I am just glad I don't itch any more because it was truly driving me crazy.

Be glad it was only your scalp!!! And you have resolution to the problem. :)

Sorry I can't help you with a replacement for your product but thought I should check with you that you have been through your other products - make up, cleaning, laundry, soaps etc. If you have an obvious problem on your scalp you might not want to develop a problem in the future on other areas. Just a thought. Took me & my DH a while to get serious about all those other products and I wouldn't want you looking like me

I had a shampoo with wheat in it I just ditched, and another with panthenol that may be derived from wheat that is questionable. But I searched the forums, and apparently garnier, dove and suave are good at labeling any gluten ingredients. So I went out and got some suave shampoo and conditioner, and though I've only used it twice so far my scalp itch is basically gone. The ones I got were from the Suave Professionals line, just read the labels and avoid anything with wheat, other gluten-y ingredients and also panthenol I think.

My problem was very similar to yours and it kept getting worse and worse. The itchy dry scalp turned greasy and I don't think I need to go into much detail as you probably know what I'm talking about.

I've tried every shampoo I could find and none of them ever really worked. Sometimes it seemed like something worked but it was just an illusion. I tried a prescription shampoo which can also easily be purchased without prescription in most chemists here; It's called Ketopine shampoo. There are many shampoos with the active ingredient ketoconazole but this particular shampoo is of high quality and smells rather nice/pleasant. I've used this shampoo and nothing else for about 7 years now and I can't say I've noticed any problems with it (touch wood). It does dry my skin after a shower for a few hours but generally everything after is great. I once forgot about using this shampoo and used a normal one for 2 weeks. All of the initial problems returned. I'd say if you take this shampoo for 2 weeks your scalp and hair problems may well disappear; at least that's the only thing that worked for me. :)

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
