Diarrhea Not Related To Gluten

I was just wondering if anyone here gets diarrhea sometimes not related to gluten. Sometimes with salsa or tomatoes or too much juice or fruit or raisins or something really spicy or greasy..etc. I will get D. It freaks me out a little b/c I always want to blame it on gluten. When I don't get any pain with it, I know it's not gluten related. Does this happen to anyone else?

Do you know that it isn't gluten related? Different levels of gluten will lead to different severity of symptoms.

I am a super sensitive celiac and I have had problems with certain naturally gluten free foods from some sources while I can eat them without symptoms if I get them from other sources. I think that sometimes they get cc'ed.

That being said, of course other things can also cause diarrhea.

Thanks!

I am a super sensitive celiac too. I avoid everything boxed or processed gluten free foods. I think I can trace the D to acidic foods. It seems to occur when I have tomato paste, orange juice, acidic fruits. Things like that. The ONLY thing new that I have added is plain tomato paste which I use to make my meat sauce to have over rice. The only ingredient in it is tomatoes. I guess acidy food is a lot for inflammed intestines to handle.

Everyone gets diarrhea now and then, whether celiac or not. It isn't always a gluten issue. Certainly dried fruit like raisins or very spicy/greasy food could cause it, if you ate enough of it, as could food poisoning or other, non-gluten intolerances. Have you been tested for tomato issues, since tomatoes and salsa both set it off?

Also - my other question would be, did anyone else who's non-celiac eat the food that made you sick? And did they also have a stomach problem afterward? I ate out recently at a Mexican restaurant that was supposed to be good for gluten free and was sick the next day. I would have assumed it to be gluten contamination, except my husband and family, all of whom can eat gluten just fine, were also feeling lousy.

I haven't been tested for tomatoes b/c it doesnt happen with fresh ones or ketchup or every time. I really think it has something to do with acid based foods.

Sorry that you all got sick at the Mexican restaurant...ugh

You might want to look into the facility where the tomato paste is made. I found that I couldn't eat store bought tomato sauce while I could eat my own. Again, I am super sensitive. I don't think that tomato sauce is a problem for the mainstream celiacs who frequent this site.

It was happening to me occasionally. I haven't had a single random D episode since starting the GAPS diet and going dairy-free. I've only been at it for about a month and a half and the D was pretty occasional so it's hard to be sure.

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
