H. Pylori

I was diagnosed with h. pylori a few weeks ago. My naturopathic dr. put me on a supplement called pylorocid with zinc, mastic gum extract, berberine sulfate hydrate, and bismuth citrate. I have been taking it for 2 weeks. From reading some other post it seems like I should be taking an antibiotic to get rid of it although I know she wants to take a natural approach. Has anyone used a supplement like this? I am also have a persisent pain (worse when seated) slightly to the left of my breast bone, along my lower left rib cage. It is painful to the touch. Could this be my stomach causing this pain? and could it be related to the h. pylori or ulcers? Thanks so much!

Mastic gum is a natural antibiotic with no side effects. I took that after I was diagnosed (by stool test) with H. Pylori. I also took L. Glutamine to heal my stomach damage from HP. I had no side effects or lingering stomach pain after 6 weeks of treatment.

I don't know the other supplements which your NP prescribed to heal your HP, but I know Mastic gum kills the H. Pylori bacteria without significantly killing off your gut's good bacteria.

Your stomach pain sounds very similar to what I experienced before I was diagnosed and treated for HP. Hang in there. Mastic gum will kill your HP. Hopefully the other supplements will heal your stomach.

The abstract linked says they found some success with using mastic gum to treat H.Pylori. It was only a 2 week study so the results may have been even better if a longer trial was done. But 4 or 5 of 10 people had relief using mastic gum in two weeks.

I haven't been to a doctor about mine,. But I think I have it too since a glutening a few weeks ago. I have pain in my left side. It is less when I lay down on my left side, but resumes after I have been up a while. Lying on my right side doesn't help at all. To me that means the stomach acid is doing something to help the situation when I lay on my left aide and it washes that area. i don't usually sleep on my left side but do sleep on my right side. Just my thinking on it.

Thank you both for your responses. I just realized I posted this in the wrong category. The pain in my left side started about 2 weeks ago--about the time I began the h. pylori treatment. I am supposed to take the supplement for 4 weeks so I am wondering why I have the pain now and not before I began treatment. I also started take L. gluatamine around the same time. Are/were either of your pains painful to the touch?

Hi Sarah,

Mine is deep inside so I have to squeeze to feel the pain better? It is not at the surface/skin or respond to a light touch kind of thing. I can definitely localize it to the top left side of my stomach though. Without any touch, I can feel it is coming from there. Boy, I sure felt it yesterday when I hopped out of my Jeep at the store. Ouch! Big time pain. I went to a grocery store and a CVS pharmacy but they didn't have mastic gum. I did find it at Vitamin Shoppe though. So far so good. It seems like it is helping. I plan to keep taking it for a month. I am also drinking ginger beer and ginger tea. I put some rum in the ginger beer at night and it takes the pain away quickly.

I am still sleeping on my left side which helps also. I am a mastic gum believer now though, good stuff! I never tried it before this.

I was just reading an article about getting better sleep and it said sleeping on your left side was better for your digestive system. They didn't go into the reason behind it..but it seems to be the case?

I hadn't heard of the mastic gum before, so thanks for sharing info on that.

Just an update on the mastic gum. The pain is gone so I'd say it works. I am going to keep taking it every day for 3 more weeks though to be sure. I took 2 in the morning and 2 at night right before bed. And slept on my left side where the pain was. I figured the mastic gum in my stomach would coat the area and do it's thing. Anyhow it worked for whatever reason. The brand I got is Solaray 500 MG. I am cutting back to one in the morning and 1 at night now. I hope you get relief soon Sarah, just wanted you to know it helped me.

I was just diagnosed with H pylori and food allergies and I have been having many weird symptoms on the top of my gastro symptoms.

Sarah, you said your rib cage is sensitive to touch. I have that and more: my whole body and mostly my upper body is overly sensitive to the touch but it is getting better now. It has been a mystery to me and my doctor thought I was having adrenal fatigue because of my chronic fatigue and other symptoms.

GFinDC, is mastic acid good just for the pain or it will kill the bacteria?

My daughter was diagnosed with Hpylori 2 1/2 weeks ago & then shortly after that diagnosed with Gluten intolerance (celiac disease) as well. Is there somekind of link between the two? She has been taking 2 antibiotics for 2 weeks & then has to take prilosec for 2 months to heal the stomach. She is done with the antibiotics but still doesnt feel better, it is so frustrating to be diagnosed with a double whammy, dont know what is causing her continued stomach aches (Hpylori or gluten)! Any advice would be welcomed.........Frustrated Mom!!!

Welcome to the board, bcsamm! I think several, if not many, people here have h. pylori experience. My DD was treated for h.pylori, and she is also treated for celiac. The story is long and complicated. I think there is some relationship between the two, but I don't have any links handy. The untreated celiac gut is susceptible to all sorts of things, as it is constantly injured (assuming the standard cultural diet of daily gluten).

My DD's case was very different (and she never has bellyaches, nor did she have any typical symptoms associated with h.pylori), as she had been treated with a gluten free diet for years when we identified and treated her h.pylori infection. I hope that your DD is feeling well. My DD's h.pylori protocol was similar to the one that you describe, and we did see improvement in her condition upon completion of her treatment. We also needed to address our DDs B12 issues, as she hadn't been properly absorbing B12 for some time (top suspect is our DD's severely injured gut just didn't allow for absorption). We have also had to work on our DD's iron levels.

There is a lot of change in simply adopting a gluten free diet, so your DD has a lot going on right now. I hope that she is feeling better quickly. Our kids have had issues wax and wane, so it hasn't been a really clear cut path. We have found that a whole foods diet prepared at home is the most effective treatment for them (and we had to adopt a gluten free home early in this journey). And we have found it necessary to do everything possible to eliminate the risks of gluten exposure in school.

When all else fails for my other DD with frequent bellyaches (also celiac, but tested negative for h.pylori), I massage her belly. We have also used heating pads. Sometimes we just cannot understand what all is playing into it, so coping with it is all that we can figure out to do. Please let your DD know that there are other kids out here that understand the struggle! My kids always appreciate when I can tell them about other kids that I read about here that have shared in similar struggles with celiac . . . and all of the stuff that seems to come along with it!

      plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

      i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

      Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗

      I agree there I've tryed this myself to prove I can't eat gluten or lactose and it sets me back for about a month till I have to go back to being very strict to settle again

      You may also need to supplement with B12 as this vitamin is also involved in iron assimilation and is often deficient in long-term undiagnosed celiac disease.
