Flu Like Aches

I keep getting hit with these flu lke aches in my whole body(especially my legs). first mystomach gets off... just gassy and acidy and maybe slightly nauseus and then the aches set it. It is awful and usually last a couple of days to a week sometimes. always seems to be related to my stomach though whe my stomach is better then the aches are gone. I can get diahrea as well like this last time. Does anyone get these symptoms. I am so frustrated right now because I have my entire family here right now to celebrate my birthday and i am scared to eat and making sure no one goes in my bathroom! Is this a typical symptom. Maybe i would just feel better if i knew i wasn't the only one.

Deb, I would say this is pretty common. At least it is for me. I get like that too... Then go through periods where I am terrified of eating anything.

I would get that too, it swhy I missed so much work, cause i felt like i was sick from a flu or something all the time, which led my boss to say. you should go see a doctor, and so on.

Terribly achy feeling, tired, explosive. I have scented candles in my bathroom that are on any time a guest is by.

Of course I also have the cat box in there, so I blame it all on them. All my friends are aware of my urgent needs as well.

hi , your not alone all last winter I keep going to the docs and he kept saying I had the flu, I ached, sick to my stomach, didnt want to eat and head aches, they were so awful id have days couldnt get off the bed except to go take a shower, didnt eat anything ,

then the flu turned into broncial and spend 3 weeks on meds and got sicker, started having panic attacks ,

finally when went back to docs told him it wasnt the flu something else was going on, he sent me to a specialist who did blood work and apparently knew about celiac disease.

had my biopsy in may and been gluten free,since. it has gotten better and

as I find more and more foods and recipes to fix it is getting easier.

I still have days where im very tired but realize part of that is the 40 plus pounds i lost this past winter.

these boards help so much ,gl and I hope you will start feeling better soon.

Ps I usually cook and fix most of my food , and dont eat out , this way I know every thing is as safe as I can make it. right now its too soon for me to try packaged foods,still remember how sick was .

hi no, youre not alone in feeling this way. I woke up this morning feeling horribly achy...just like the flu. I couldnt do anything today-not even walk my puppy. I feel like I worked out at the gym for hours and now feel sore. Im cranky and irritable as well as having a sore/bloated stomach.

Im suspecting it is Celiac-related, as I had PF Chang for dinner last night and indulged in a ton of food they swore was prepared gluten-free (they do have a specific gluten-free Menu, which is why I wanted to try it in the first place).

The chinese food was the best!!! I havent had chinese food with flavoring or noodle dishes since before being diagnosed, 6 yrs ago. Now Im second-guessing if there wasnt some gluten lurking somewhere. I would be surprised, as I enjoyed this non gluten-free tasting food.......said to myself: this is too good to be true, anything gluten-free doesnt taste this sinfully delicious!!!!!!!!!

My best advice is just to stay calm, relaxed, take a hot shower/bath, watch a movie, read, call a friend........anything pleasant to take your mind off it. Eventually it'll pass, as does everything else in life!!!!

If anyone else experienced any gluten in their food from this well known place????

Hi Deb,

As you can see you are definitely not alone with these symptoms.

The achey feeling is my main symptom when I've had gluten. I get the same stomach symptoms as you without the big D (I get more constipated than usual if that's possible). The aches and tiredness last for at least a week - stomach clears up sooner.

I have different symptoms to the other foods I'm allergic/intolerant to but you are describing my typical gluten symptoms!

We all know EXACTLY how you feel re being embarrassed. I had the runs at work yesterday - tiny office with the loo right next to the kitchen :ph34r: . My face is still red!

I made it through my party and was pretty good by nighttime thanks to my wonderful husband who gave me a great massage. The next morning the aches were completely gone. My stomach however is on high alert and very sensitive.

I realize now that I have been getting gluten from the beginning. ieat sushi and I never knew that the crab that is in it which is fake is made with gluten!!!!!! I eat sushi all the time!!! omg

Thanks for all the replies. it is going to make me even more vigilant about getting that gluten out.

Deb- YES! 2 weeks ago I was so achey they tested me for Lyme disease. Negative and then after the gluten got out of my system, thye aches went away. They're back today after eating Garden of Eatin tortilla chips. Garden of eatin will no longer guarantee their products to be gluten-free as they are processed on the same lines as gluten. Ahhhhh!

OMG...I've been having symptoms for over a week now. I've been sooo careful with everything I eat. I've been eating the Garden of Eatin tortilla chips... :blink:

I'm just learning...I've only been eating the "safe" foods. Those chips were on WF's gluten free list. :angry:

My husband is really achy also & has said he feels like it is the flu. He is meeting with a nutritionist today & hopefully if he has been exposed to gluten in some food we are unaware of then they can help & maybe ease his pain. Just yesterday he got it bad. We aren't sure if it was the Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage or the Cousin Willies popcorn that got him. Anyone know?

It was a list of gluten-free foods I printed from the Whole Food's website. I took the list shopping with me and only bought stuff off the list. I have the Delphi list too but I use that for the trips to the regular supermarkets. Like I said I'm new at this so I'm basically trusting these lists. DAMN...I just looked at the Delphi list.

They will no longer guarantee ANY of their chips as gluten-free because they are processed on the same equipment as other gluten products. :( I guess next time I need to be more diligent. Maybe this is why I've been sick though...do you think the risk for contamination with these chips is high? It sucks because I'm never going to heal if I keep messing up like this :angry:

That's funny (not ha ha but ironic) as I use the Whole Foods list too. I ate their chips since going gluten-free (usually sesame blues) and always wondered why I felt hideous after (I thought I was having problems with salsa). Now I realize it was the chips, not the salsa. I am new at this too (went gluten-free in January) and I think it is possible to be this sensitive- I'm finding out I am (sick three days now after eating those chips).

My theory is even if you read, hear etc. that it's gluten-free and you have a reaction, then don't eat it. No matter what anyone says. :angry: Beverly

Yeah...thats what I'm starting to figure out. I'm glad I saw your post cuz maybe now I have an explanation for these reactions I've been having. I also reacted to Glutino blueberry breakfast bars (which are really good). I don't know if there can be any contamination with these but I'm just going to stay away until I'm healed. Maybe then I won't be as sensitive...this could be wishful thinking but we'll see. :)

      Hello all! My life in the last five years has been crazy. I got married in 2020 at the age of 27, pregnant with our first child almost two months later, gave birth in 2021. We had another baby in April of 2023 and our last baby this March of 2025. I had some issues after my second but nothing ever made me think, "I should see a doctor about this." After having my last baby this year, my body has finally started to find its new rhythm and balance...but things started to feel out of sorts. A lot of symptoms were convoluted with postpartum symptoms, and, to top it all off, my cycle came back about 4m postpartum. I was having reoccurring migraines, nausea, joint pain, numbness in my right arm, hand and fingers, tummy problems, hives. I finally went to my PCP in August just for a wellness check and I brought up my ailments. I'm so thankful for a doctor that listens and is thorough. He ended up running a food allergy panel, an environmental respiratory panel, and a celiac panel. I found out I was allergic to wheat, allergic to about every plant and dust mites, and I did have celiac. I had an endoscopy done on October 3 and my results confirmed celiac in the early stages! I am truly blessed to have an answer to my issues. When I eat gluten, my brain feels like it's on fire and like someone is squeezing it. I can't think straight and I zone out easily. My eyes can't focus. I get a super bad migraine and nausea. I get so tired and irritable and anxious. My body hurts sometimes and my gut gets bloated, gassy, constipated, and ends with bowel movements. All this time I thought I was just having mom brain or feeling the effects of postpartum, sleep deprivation, and the like (which I probably was having and the celiac disease just ramped it up!) I have yet to see a dietician but I've already been eating and shopping gluten-free. My husband and I have been working on turning our kitchen 100% gluten-free (we didn't think this would be so expensive but he assured me that my health is worth all the money in the world). There are still a few things to replace and clean. I'm already getting tired of reading labels. I even replaced some of my personal hygiene care for myself and the kids because they were either made with oats or not labeled gluten-free. I have already started feeling better but have made some mistakes along the way or have gotten contamination thrown into the mix. It's been hard! Today I joked that I got diagnosed at the worst time of the year with all the holidays coming up. I will just need to bring my own food to have and to share. It will be okay but different after years of eating "normally". Today I ordered in person at Chipotle and was trying not to feel self-conscious as the line got long because they were following food-allergy protocols. It's all worth it to be the healthiest version of myself for me and my family. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little overwhelmed and a little overloaded!  I am thankful for this community and I look forward to learning more from you all. I need the help, that's for sure!

      On the AIP diet, all processed foods are eliminated.  This includes gluten-free bread.  You'll be eating meats and vegetables, mostly.  Meats that are processed, like sausages, sandwich meats, bacons, chicken nuggets, etc., are eliminated as well.  Veggies should be fresh, or frozen without other ingredients like sauces or seasonings.  Nightshade vegetables (eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers) are excluded.  They contain alkaloids that promote a leaky gut and inflammation.  Dairy and eggs are also eliminated.   I know it sounds really stark, but eating this way really improved my health.  The AIP diet can be low in nutrients, and, with malabsorption, it's important to supplement vitamins and minerals.

      Thank you for responding and for prayers.  So sorry for your struggles, I will keep you in mine.  You are so young to have so many struggles, mine are mild by comparison.  I didn't have Celiac Disease (celiac disease) until I had my gallbladder removed 13 years ago; at least nothing I was aware of.  Following surgery: multiple symptoms/oddities appeared including ridges on fingernails, eczema, hair falling out in patches, dry eyes, upset stomach constantly and other weird symptoms that I don't really remember.  Gastro did tests and endoscopy and verified celiac disease. Re heart: I was born with Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) and an irregular heartbeat, yet heart was extremely strong.  It was difficult to pick up the irregular heartbeat on the EKG per cardiologist.  I had Covid at 77, recovered in 10 days and 2 weeks later developed long Covid. What the doctors and nurses called the "kickoff to long Covid, was A-fib.  I didn't know what was going on with my heart and had ignored early symptoms as some kind of passing aftereffect stemming from Covid.  I was right about where it came from, but wrong on it being "passing".  I have A-fib as my permanent reminder of Covid and take Flecainide every morning and night and will for the rest of my life to stabilize my heartbeat.

      When I accidentally consume gluten it compromises the well-being of my heart and arteries. Last time I had a significant exposure, about six months ago, I had AFib for about ten days. It came on every day around dinner time. After the ten days or so it went away and hasn't come back.  My cardiologist offered me a collection of pharmaceuticals at the time.  But I passed on them.

      So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure! Thank you kitty kitty   I am going to look this diet up right away.  And read the paleo diet and really see if I can make this a better situation then it currently is.
