I May Be In Love With A Grillmaster...

At Hy Vee today, Shane the Grillmaster was making the most wonderful smelling sandwiches outside. I decided to see if maybe, maybe I could eat it. So I asked to see the bottle of seasoning, and was so bummed to see it listed wheat and barley. So I said never mind. And then he said he could make me a ribeye with a different seasoning that was gluten free. :) I hesitated, but I was starving, so said ok. And THEN he OFFERS to clean the grill and the tongs, just for me! How cool is that! I always hesitate to ask cuz I don't want to annoy anyone.

So turns out Shane the Grillmaster did a presentation on gluen free food at college, and learned all about Celiac Disease, he could not have been more accomodating.

And he charged me $1 less since I didn't want a bun.

And the ribeye was scrumptious!!! :)

Was going to ask if he was cute but who cares - if he cooks and understands gluten-free! :D

I find that HyVee has many employees who have some understanding of gluten-free. I think because they have tried to be a supplier of gluten-free food. The one I go to in Overland Park, KS has more gluten-free speciality stuff than the WF.

Too cool!!!!

Very cool. :)

Sounds delish!!!!!

I am not familiar with Hy Vee (I live in NY state)

but if you meet ANY guy who can cook, LISTEN to you, fulfill your needs, and you ATE WELL and safely? well, honey, you just hit the mother lode. Who needs a bun if you have all that?

Congrats on having a stellar day!!! :D

Did you find out if he was married?

beachbirdie Contributor

Sweet! :P

Yes, he was cute. But he was also about 22 and I am chasing 40 and happily married so...

;)

But it made my day to not only be able to eat prepared food, but to have someone go the extra mile to make it safe for me, without even asking!

The Hy Vee here has a pretty decent gluten-free section, and the celiac support group is headed by the Hy Vee dietician, so they are pretty helpful. But usually the cooks in the deli there are clueless, and it is always torture walking through smelling all the delicious things I can't eat! Thanks to Shane, now I have somewhere to go all summer long!

And it's very nice to have a member of the younger generation caring so much!

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
