I have not seen many with gluten but yes some flavored coffees can so you need to always check ingredients and if in question call the manufacturer.

Some teas (celestial seasonings for one) contain barley malt.

I have yet to find a flavored coffee with gluten, other than a couple at Starbucks that they add things to after they brew it. To make sure, though, call the company.

Celestial Seasonings will put gluten free right on the box for the ones that are.

As for coffees, I believe I have run across ones that are flavored that have gluten but that was only 1 time a while ago(they could have changed it by now too)...most of the time isn't good enough for celiac though so you will have to check. If it doesn't have ingredients then call the company(unless it is a company that will not hide anything)

I know how you feel. I get in the mood for hazelnut coffee from time to time, but am afraid of risking it. The bags of beans usually say "natural flavoring", which turns me away. For now, I'm sticking with 100% Colombian, which is pretty good stuff.

To be honest, It just hasn't been enough of a problem for me to go to the trouble of calling 8 O'Clock coffee about the ingredients on their hazelnut beans.

Vydor,

Thanks! I never considered not using the grinder at the grocery store or that other people's home coffee maker could have gluten IN it!

As luck would have it, my dh is a no-flavor coffee fanatic, so we do our own grinding at home BUT it gives me pause for what goes on in my in-laws home (or rather, coffee maker) and the flavored coffees they drink.....

!!!!!!!!! :o

Thanks for contacting Folgers, Vincent.

Our coffees are 100% pure coffee.  Since coffee has no nutritional value, there's no significant amount of calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, sodium, or potassium.  In fact, one serving of brewed coffee contains less than 5 calories. There is no gluten at all in any Folgers version.

We use natural and artificial flavorings in our flavored Ground and Whole Bean versions.  You'll get a smooth coffee taste, with just a hint of flavor.  The best part is that the flavorings don't affect the nutritional content of the coffee; there are no additional calories, carbohydrates, alcohol or sugars.

If you prefer decaf coffee, it might help to know we only use pure water and natural ingredients for decaffeination.  So, you can have all of the flavor, without all the caffeine!

I hope this information helps!

Gwyn

P.S.  Are you or is someone you know adding a new bundle of joy to the family?  Pampers has a new program to reward parents for the important day-to-day choices they make, including choosing Pampers.  Just look for the codes inside packages of Pampers diapers and training pants.  Then, enter the code at Open Original Shared Link to earn points and redeem rewards.  For more information about the program, log onto Open Original Shared Link

My 5yo was diagnosed with celiac last year by being tested after his sister was diagnosed. We are very strict on the gluten-free diet, but unsure what his reactions are as he was diagnosed without many symptoms other than low ferritin.  He had a school party where his teacher made gluten-free gingerbread men. I almost said no because she made it in her kitchen but I thought it would be ok.  Next day and for a few after his behavior is awful. Hitting, rude, disrespectful. Mainly he kept saying his legs were shaking. Is this a gluten exposure symptom that anyone else gets? Also the bad behavior?
    • trents
Not necessarily. The "Gluten Free" label means not more than 20ppm of gluten in the product which is often not enough for super sensitive celiacs. You would need to be looking for "Certified Gluten Free" (GFCO endorsed) which means no more than 10ppm of gluten. Having said that, "Gluten Free" doesn't mean that there will necessarily be more gluten than "Certified Gluten" in any given batch run. It just means there could be.

I think it is wise to seek a second opinion from a GI doc and to go on a gluten free diet in the meantime. The GI doc may look at all the evidence, including the biopsy report, and conclude you don't need anything else to reach a dx of celiac disease and so, there would be no need for a gluten challenge. But if the GI doc does want to do more testing, you can worry about the gluten challenge at that time. But between now and the time of the appointment, if your symptoms improve on a gluten free diet, that is more evidence. Just keep in mind that if a gluten challenge is called for, the bare minimum challenge length is two weeks of the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten, which is about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread. But, I would count on giving it four weeks to be sure.

thank you both for the insights. i agree, im going to back off on dairy and try sucraid. thanks for the tip about protein powder, i will look for whey protein powder/drinks!   i don’t understand why my doctor refused to order it either. so i’ve decided i’m not going to her again, and i’m going to get a second opinion with a GI recommended to me by someone with celiac. unfortunately my first appointment isn’t until February 17th. do you think i should go gluten free now or wait until after i meet with the new doctor? i’m torn about what i should do, i dont know if she is going to want to repeat the endoscopy, and i know ill have to be eating gluten to have a positive biopsy. i could always do the gluten challenge on the other hand if she does want to repeat the biopsy.    thanks again, i appreciate the support here. i’ve learned a lot from these boards. i dont know anyone in real life with celiac.
