Hello I'm josey and I had a gastroscopy yesterday because a few months ago I had a rash on my chest and elbow and ankle so my doctor did a blood test and came back positive for celiac disease so I had the gastroscopy yesterday and the doctor said my small bowel looks abnormal so he said I probably have celiac disease, he said I can start the diet now , but I have no idea where to start ...

Doctors are so helpful, aren't they?

Celiac is the only disease that a doctor says, " you have it & good luck with that". Can you imagine them saying that to a newly diagnosed diabetic or cancer patient?

Anyway, here is a good place to start:

If bedside manners meant the difference between having a job and not, 90 percent of doctors would be unemployed. I always find it funny how as a financial planner for a big bank I would lose my job in a second if I treated my customers the way doctors do their patients. If I rolled my eyes whenever a client was confused about some finance term and said "here is your investment portfolio, go find out what I invested for you by yourself." it doesn't make sense in any other industry, why do doctors get away with it?

Luckily celiac research is very easy and accessible, let me know if you have any specific questions.

Aren't doctors awesome? I got the same treatment... you have celiac, good luck! Obnoxious. The link Karen shared is great. Ask any questions you have after you check it out, we're all here to help. And keep in mind that no matter how you feel, you aren't crazy and it is normal.

Welcome!

In 4-6 weeks you will likely know far more than your doctor about Celiac Disease.

Start with the Newbie 101 thread, then ask as many questions as you need. Transitioning to a gluten-free life is not easy, but it does become much easier with time.

Let us know how we can help :)

Hi Josey,

Take two aspirin, read all the threads below, and call me in the morning. :D

Ok, you don't have to read all those, some are just for reference.

Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months:

Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet.

Get your vitamin/mineral levels tested also.

Don't eat in restaurants

Eat only whole foods not processed foods.

Eat only food you cook yourself, think simple foods, not gourmet meals.

Take probiotics.

Take gluten-free vitamins.

Take digestive enzymes.

Avoid dairy.

Avoid sugars and starchy foods.

Avoid alcohol.

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
