Club Soda?

Anyone know anything about club soda, sparkling water etc, and their effect on celiacs? I've noticed that certain brands make me feel like death-on-a-stick, while others are ok. Perrier and a local generic brand seem to be the worst.

thanks

I'm good with Perrier!

I have weird reactions to certain water brands (like Dasani), so maybe it's just one of those things.

I also drink club soda constantly.

Gabby,

All carbonated drinks bother my stomach. It might be from celiac, or crohn's. I don't know, but they hurt!

Beware of DASANI it is NOT WATER. They migt telll you it's water. But read the ingredients.

Try DISTILLED WATER if you are reactive to spring water...

It is water, but they add minerals and a little salt.

All i know is that when I drink anything carbonated I get gassy (both ends). That's one of the things they tell you to avoid when on an IBS diet is carbonation. Maybe it's that??

Some say that distilled water is not safe to drink on an ongoing basis, because it lacks any type of minerals. I prefer not to drink our tap water since it is treated with chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) and fluoride. I drink reverse osmosis water at home instead.

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
