  1. Hi! I know I read somewhere here about gluten-free pet food but I can't find it. We have 2 large dogs and 5 cats (Yes, I know- it's insane...) so I'm wondering, first, where you get it, and then how pricey is it? I may have to forego this aspect of trying to have a gluten-free household because of prohibitive cost, but just wondering if anyone can help...
  2. Erica, When some people quit smoking there's definitely a withdrawal period that can manifest in all kinds of different symptoms. I am an ex-smoker but never smoked enough for that to happen. A close friend of mine has been trying to quit for months now and he describes anxiety and panic much like what you describe. I wish you both luck in getting through...
  3. I am not that far in- 5 monthsish, but I am currently going downhill as well and feeling pretty depressed about it. I like Carla's idea of seeing a naturopath and along those lines I have made a commitment to myself to see my acupuncturist regularly for a bit to see if maybe we can work some of it out together. I, too, had a bad virus, had two rounds of...
  4. Quin? You crack me up! I, too, wish I could try your cheeses. Right now the closest I'm going to get to eating cheese is watching Wallace and Grommit- which can be pretty satisfying, actually. I hope you feel better. I have bad nights and they are recently horrible again after being much better for a month or so. Gets me pretty bloody depressed as I...

    ARCHIVED Drinking

I am a wine drinker- pretty much always with dinner. I have to say, it is the ONLY thing that alleviates the pain sometimes. But that is not why I like wine. I love the ceremony, I love the lovely ambience it imparts to dinner, and I use NO other drugs- including cold medications or drugs for this or drugs for that. My kids chastise me about not even...
  6. Excellent! I will use stock- that I make, of course. My trust level in things is going right down the tubes; can you tell? Thanks! lisa
  7. Marcilab Could you tell us more about the composition of kefir? Thanks, lisa
  8. Your symptoms do sound familiar, but probably a good idea to rule out other things. Remember, especially when first gluten-free, it is better to stick with WHOLE foods- meat, fish, chicken, veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds. Trying to replace old foods with gluten-free, is, I think, trickier. Cook things yourself, make more than you need for one meal so you...
  9. Cool. Someday I may try millet, too! Thanks! lisa
  10. Also, Quin- That is so cool you grow your own seed. I am trying to grow more of my food, but we're in Maine so it's a challenge. My spousal equivalent is building me a cold frame for this winter- we'll see how we do. lisa
  11. Quin, Thank you! I am working up the gumption to try that recipe! Thanks for the warning about the cross-contamination. The quinoa I have is Keen.Wa Brand Ancient Harvest. It was nice to hear from you again! lisa
  12. Quin, What a cool name... thank you for the perspective. It's funny- I JUST bought my first bag of quinoa yesterday! Now I'm just eyeing it on my gluten-free shelf thinking about what I might do with it. I'm scared of everything and the only processed foods I eat right now are Erewhon's Rice Krispies and Cape Cod potato chips. I have made no gluten...
  13. I'm gluten-intolerant (dx Enterolab), 2 genes HLA-DQ1, both, sub-types 5 and 6, respectively, and am VERY sensitive, moreso as I've gone on. A glutening (which I'm enduring right now, but can't find the culprit) lasts a few days to a week of severe abdominal pain (wakes me up at night), bloating, gas, constipation!!!(go figure) and general malaise and depression...
  14. Hi, Rebecca, Welcome to the Board! I, too, have FAR more intense reactions now that I'm 5 months gluten-free. It seems to be the consensus of many people who write on this board that this response is common. Right now I am TERRIFIED of eating out because of cc issues and will only go every now and then to a friend's restaurant where I KNOW they are...
  15. Hi, Corn Avoiders! I avoid it as well although it's close to impossible. The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan is a must-read for everyone in our country, no matter how hyperbolic that sounds. EVERYTHING is made from corn- including our BEEF!, (who should be eating grass), chicken... It's really awful what this country has done to farming. We have...
  16. Toni, I had low positive bloodwork after 4 months mostly gluten-free and an inconclusive biopsy and NO diagnosis from the Gastro! Hmmmm..... I haven't gone back to talk with him because I went through Enterolab to confirm I'm gluten intolerant. But I have been meaning to let him know there's a whole range of gluten reactions and he missed the boat....
  17. Thank you all! April, thank you- that's an old remedy on both my French and Greek side and I'm definitely doing that next- I don't want any more antibiotics! Yes, Elonwy an Tiffany, I've always had problems with them- this just seems off the charts! If we could just get more than two days in a row of sun in Maine maybe I could bake it out of me! Thank...
  18. If you're still reading this, I would go ahead with the biopsy- eating gluten doesn't matter that much now. I couldn't do the challenge before the endoscopy/colonoscopy because I got too sick, so was gluten-free (mostly) for 4 months prior. I asked to be put completely under because of my fear of choking and my doctor absolutely agreed. So, I was nervous...
  19. Thank you both! They just called me to let me know it's derived from soy. (another thing I'm avoiding) But I'm hoping a trace amount won't bother me. The woman from SunGold foods was VERY kind and listened closely to what I told her about the nature of celiac and gluten intolerance. She said she was very happy to research it because it's something she...
  20. Ravenwoodglass, Yes, it was all checked out. I guess my question is: can it still FEEL like a glutening? Thank you for the advice, though. lisa
  21. Hi all! Does anyone know if when "mixed tocopherols" are listed as an ingredient, which I think is Vit E, if they are necessarily derived from wheat germ? Waiting to hear back from a company on this, but I think I read something somewhere that said this was from wheat germ. I hope not 'cause I've probably glutened myself with SunGold Sunbutter! Thanks...
  22. Jess I have two days left. Of course, my ear is still hurting a bit and feels "full". I started with a bronchial infection, like you- my daughter had it as well and just recovering! I hope you feel well soon! lisa
  23. I'm glad I don't have to give up the ship- I'm the Captain and I'm going DOWN with this sucker! Sigh... I'm gluten, dairy, soy and corn- free and today I agree with Ursula- glad I don't have to give up air and all! But I'd have to say wine! lisa
  24. Thank you all! Yes, I did check the date and it's Dec. 2007 for the Hall's but I'm not going to have any just to be sure for now. I do know the antibiotics are killing off things both good and bad so I guess I should blame them for now. Today and tomorrow and then I'm done. Of course, my ear infection doesn't feel like it's done with me yet so...sigh...
