  1. Welcome to the Board Yes, keep checking your diet, toiletries, cosmetics for possible gluten- it's hidden in so many forms! You do sound like someone who will need more time to heal where you were quite advanced in the disease. I've learned from this board that no one gets the diet right immediately; it's a learning process. Don't give up or think of...
  2. Hi, Everyone, Just me harping on antibiotics again. Does ANYONE have experience with antibiotics giving them the same symptoms as a glutening? I've now had zithromax and amoxicillin and am having similar GI symptoms as well as low back pain and joint cracking- all this ALWAYS worse for me at night. My acupuncturist thinks it's the antibiotics. I know...
  3. Toni, I am 5 months into mostly gluten-free. ( A few things I missed at first.) I am still struggling with other intolerances. I do think maybe my body doesn't make certain enzymes to digest food because I seem highly sensitive to many things. Right now I am gluten, dairy, corn and soy-free. A food log helps a lot although it doesn't always give you...
  4. Hello, Babe Welcome to Board. Everyone gave you the great advice, so, please, get the celiac blood panel done for your kids and, plase, find a doctor familiar with celiac! (Probably easier said than done.) Better health to you soon! lisa
  5. That's a brilliant concept- I like your style! lisa
  6. Mayflowers, 'Cause I'm a LUNATIC! Pretty savvy with the old computer! Sorry. yes, I would never encourage anyone to just get a colonoscopy for the heck of it! Take care. lisa Ooh... sorry about your ankle!
  7. Okay, that was weird- first time my message got mixed up with someone else's. Hope you can sort it out. lisa My response starts with "I like your strategy..." lisa
  8. Yes, I have it here and it is MILD compared to you- 12 units! Of course, I was off gluten at that point for 4 months. (Except for the "stray" gluten that seems to easily permeate my aura...) My tTg was down from 28 when my blood was tested ("mild" positive) to 7- so that was good. I have a sneaking suspicion you might do well to go through with the colonoscopy...
  9. I am working on my 5th month gluten, dairy, corn and soy-free and am hoping, like you, to try dairy again someday. Right now, though SO MUCH better, still symptomatic so I'm going to hang in there a few more months before I give it the old bovine try. Good luck to you! lisa
  10. I had the biopsy/colonoscopy, too, just to rule out things more "serious". I was so sick and uncomfortable for so long, I needed to do that. My bloodwork was positive, biopsy negative. Of course, I'd been gluten-free for a few months at that time. You have to "trust your gut", but it sounds like doing the biopsy may give you more peace of mind. Good...
  11. Careful, some vanilla extracts- a lot actually- are made with grain alcohols. I make my own. Very easy- 3 vanilla beans in skinny bottle with plain brandy for a month. Delicious! lisa
  12. I, too, am sick with a "summer bug"! Seems so weird. My daughter as well, and both our doctors are saying they're seeing a lot of this chest, coughy, bronchial sinusy stuff lately! It's a particularly nasty one, too. I hope you feel better. Sometimes that old adage, "when you hear hoofbeats, think horses" actually makes sense. We're on the East Coast...
  13. Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help! lisa
  14. Hello again, I'm still on an antibiotic odyssey because the stupid bronchial infection has now turned to nasty sinus inf. Given amoxicillin, called the pharmacist- said it's ok, but I see they're gelcaps. I've taken the first one because my ear and throat are both in so much pain, but wondering if I'm going to be sorry. Anyone know ANYTHING? This really...
  15. I just finished a round of zithromax which is supposedly gluten-free. But I am now having lots of symptoms, some like I had prior to becoming gluten-free. I think antibiotics mess us up no matter what- I've never been a big proponent of taking them, especially since our overusage of them, both medically and in our food supply, has led to resistant bacterial...
  16. I work with kids with Down Syndrome- this article made me sick. These people have taught me so much, but, according to this study, don't deserve the quality of life every human deserves? Yes, let's bombard them with our outrage. lisa
  17. Thank you, Evie- I used to test positive to mold allergy, but this spring was negative. Gosh, who knows? But that makes some sense in regard to the mushrooms. I am taking the probiotics as well. Thank you so much for your thoughts! lisa
  18. Jennyj, Elonwy and Taz- Thank you very much. I suspect the antis have me "off". Also have weird fuzzy feeling in back of my throat that seems to come and go these days- hate it. Maybe my whole system is out of whack. I'll just soldier on and hope it gets back at least to where I was. Thank you so much! lisa
  19. Hi! I am desparately trying to figure out what's caused some symptoms to come back that had been GONE for months! Lower Back pain, food in stool, GI stuff...) Do mushrooms cause trouble for anyone? Also, just finished a round of Zithromax for bronchial infection and I guess that could have screwed me up, but it seems like not this much. I am afraid I...
  20. Portland is my city! I have not yet ventured into gluten-free dining, though, as I am still a bit symptomatic and TERRIFIED of getting glutened! But there are so many great restaurants- check out the Old Port, Exchange St. in particular, for many great choices. Also, David's on Congress street seems progressive so perhaps aware of the gluten thing? If...
  21. Hi! HLA-DQ 1 is a gene predisposing you to gluten sensitivity. You have TWO, which means you got one from each parent. This means all of your children will have gotten at least ONE gluten sensitivity gene as well. They are not the main celiac genes, but still mean your body doesn't tolerate gluten. Two copies mean" there is an even stronger predisposition...
  22. I agree that I would be nervous to advise where you have other serious issues, but, yes, I have seen my intestines "ball up" and move around before I found out about the gluten. Do check your medications- also, I,m very leery of any canned food. The carrots? Sometimes they put other things in the water in the can. I hope you feel better soon! lisa
  23. Thank you SO MUCH! I have needed a cough drop lately and those have always been my favorites, particularly because they use sugar instead of the ubiquitous corn syrup. Thank you again! lisa
  24. Welcome to the Board- so much good info here! It seems daunting at first, but keep reading and you will learn so much! Good luck! lisa
  25. You have the same genes as me- I'm sorry. Everyone here will help, though. It will get better and a bit easier as time goes on. Sending you some "heart". lisa
