  1. Silly question but is there gluten in things like laundry soap or fabric softener or dryer sheets? Or in the finish put on fabrics? I always see people mention bath & beauty products but never laundry supplies. (Perhaps because it's a non-issue???)
  2. Well, yes and no. Back a number of years ago, our whole family went gluten-free because our son has Asperger's (high functioning autism) and we did the Gluten-free Casein-free diet (which was very helpful). I'd had lifelong d/c, bloating, tummy rumbles and pains and troubles... I'd always been told it was "normal", tho one doc had suggested IBS...
  3. I referenced this in another post but wanted to put it here with some additional information. The problem with gluten-free food when you're used to cooking "regular" meals is that it takes a long time to think about what to eat and how to prepare it. The answer to this problem (and the key to celiac sanity) is pre-cooking food. This is a similar...
  4. I just checked my envelopes. I've used the same brand for years (Ampad, the latin name for which is El Cheapo Walmarto), so there's a pretty good chance they're the ones that made me sick before. They are made in Mexico. Another good reason to only buy American made, perhaps?
  5. Trillium I agree with you ten thousand percent. But (y'all knew that was coming right? ) here's the thing: My primary symptoms are weight gain, sluggishness, d/c and some tummy trouble. Which interestingly describes a lot of the same people who are asking me about gluten-free. How many of them *actually* have gluten intolerance? That would be an interesting...
  6. The first time I went gluten-free I lost weight too - but wasn't nearly as heavy as I am now (I was maybe 30lbs overweight at the time - now I'm 70-80lbs +) ... and if I start on a normal diet I gain back FAST. BUT... I'm not eating less but I am now eating much less restaurant food, so I'm sure that I'm getting far, far fewer calories than I did before.
  7. I don't know about Mead envelopes specifically, but when I was gluten-free before I occasionally got sick off envelopes and didn't realize for a while what was happening. I did off stamps too, but I don't think they make lick-em-stick-em stamps anymore do they? Then I went back to eating gluten and got a HORRIBLE paper cut on my tongue. I'll never lick another...
  8. Heh. I've lost 12 pounds in a week (and feel incredible) since going gluten-free. I figure if I could lose a pound a day for 80 days I'll be all set tho I do realize that practically speaking that's probably impossible and even if it were it wouldn't be healthy. I'm not trying to do anything to lose the weight - I'm eating as much bread and pasta...
  9. One of two things is possible - 1) Something you're eating now is cross-contaminated with gluten or 2) You have _____ problems in addition to gluten problems Given that your symptoms don't 100% match those of "being glutened" I would lean toward #2. For example, if I eat millet or anything with a small amount of millet in it, I can't button my...
  10. My husband and I eat out - a lot - often with friends. I can "usually" find something gluten-free on most any menu, but not always - and I'm not always certain the kitchen can avoid cross-contamination. So I was thinking - what if I packed some foods along? They'd need to be light and totally non-perishable. I can always order a salad, but plain salad...
  11. Susie, that begs an interesting question: is celiac disease actually caused by a factor *other* than gluten itself (for example, genetic manipulation or pesticides & fertilizers changing the makeup of the plants, and this in turn sets off a chain reaction in already-susceptible individuals? I read once that a lady with celiac (positive blood work...
  12. Well - like I said, having come out of a religion, I would never again have anything to do with one. So we're really talking about two different things. I would agree with you that religions are far too limiting. There's Someone better than a religion.
  13. Thanks for posting that bit - I was looking for improvement there already (1 week) because I'm seeing HUGE improvements elsewhere. Of course I'm not 100% sure that what I have is actually dh - but having looked at the pictures and symptoms I'm now suspecting it.
  14. Such as? and Whyso? And what if He really *was* telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth (actually, He said that *He* is the Truth - which if that's true, makes truth a rather different thing than the subjective way we consider it - doesn't it?) Just curious
  15. In case anyone hadn't noticed from my last post, I'm madly radically passionately in love with Jesus and focused on bringing book of Acts style revival to the world
  16. Indeed. Jesus said unequivocally that He is God, that there is no way to the Father except through Him, that we must be saved - through Him - to enjoy a relationship with the Father, have power here on earth, and to spend eternity with Him (the only alternative being hell). Then He gave His life on the cross to make it all happen, and three days...
  17. I can't remember if it was in the meats or not... but several of the McDonald's items in the ingredient list I found yesterday were like this: sodium gezhundheit, nyet eathisite, dangerousite (derived from plant source), etc. (I can't recall any specific ingredients and don't have the link handy) That made me wonder... "exactly what plants are...
  18. I hate to tell you this, but McDonald's chicken has wheat in it: Grilled Chicken Breast Filet: Chicken breast filets with rib meat, water, seasoning (salt, sugar, food starch-modified, maltodextrin, spices, dextrose, autolyzed yeast extract, hydrolyzed [corn gluten, soy, wheat gluten] proteins, garlic powder, paprika, chicken fat, chicken broth, natural...
  19. We were talking in another thread yesterday about meat not always being gluten-free. I said I was going to check while grocery shopping today at Aldi's to see. I checked nearly all of the fresh and frozen meats, and just about everything was "enhanced" with "solution" or "broth". No ingredients listed on most of the packages, and those that did...
  20. Sweetie, if you're having that many joint and eye problems (and pregnancy/delivery problems! and pain and fatigue) as well, you need to be evaluated ASAP for ehlers-danlos syndrome!! There's a good chance your doctor has either never heard of it, or will poo poo the idea (because he didn't think of it). Call the largest teaching hospital or hospital...
  21. I really think over the last 5 years or so people have become a lot more used to other people being on this diet or that. If you were ordering plain chicken breast sliced on salad and someone asked you why and you said "Atkins Diet!" no one would bat an eyelash. If it was me out with a bunch of girls from work and they wanted, say, cake or pasta, I...
  22. I used to be much the same! As a consequence we did (and still do) eat out WAY too much. Not having much I can eat in a restaurant will help to curb that! My #1 friend for cooking is actually my freezer. I have done OAMC before (once a month cooking) but it takes a whole day and leaves me exhausted for another three days after!) So I modified it to where...
  23. IMHO the easiest way to get going on the diet is not to try to sort out gluten free products so much as to sort gluten-free flour+additives (like sorghum, millet, rice flour, xanthan gum) and learn to cook for yourself. Start with bread and then progress to some sort of cookie or brownie to satisfy the sweet tooth. Also buy a good-tasting gluten-free...
  24. https://www.celiac.com/gluten-free/index.php?showtopic=2609 Some previous talk here on the forum about the issue.
  25. Hi Sunshyne! What set me on this journey a second time (after being told a few years back that I do NOT have celiac) is a myriad of symptoms all related to hormones - thyroid and female mostly. A friend who has PCOS, and whose kids have celiac told me that her doctor put her on a gluten-free diet, citing definite links between PCOS and gluten intolerance...
