  1. yes. with very good results!
  2. Emily, Yes - as I have commented already, I think you are doing all the right things, it's just that you are very early on this path that some of us have been dealing with for quite awhile. Knowledge is king - many adults (including me in the very beginning) have no clue about how far gluten extends, and also how social food is. You tell people you can...
  3. Gosh, your post nearly made me cry too! We had very good teacher experiences. When my son was first diagnosed (mid-term 5th grade) I sent a long e-mail to the teacher explaining things, and copied the principal, asst. principal, coach, and school nurse. Our kids go to Catholic schools also. I explained also that DS was having difficulty adjusting and...
  4. There are pros and cons to the whole household going gluten-free. Can be quite expensive when you have a large family. Our household is not gluten-free. But I often eat that way myself, primarily as a show of support, but also I need to lose weight, and I have cut out the lion's share of wheat and processed sugar from my diet (and it's working!). The...
  5. That is hilarious! I think I'll have to do that for my daughter's birthday!!
  6. "My" pizza recipe is from Bette Hagman's book The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread. I highly recommend this book if you want to tackle baking. I originally borrowed it from the library, and then bought a copy. I'll send you the recipe on a PM.
  7. The grieving is very real, and will get better, but it will always be there. Maybe you have already done this - it's not clear from your post, but involve her as much as possible. In other words, take her shopping and let her pick out the gluten-free snacks. Let her feel she has some control. Assure her that you as a family will get through this together...
  8. You are obviously on the right track - that's excellent progress. Just keep at it!
  9. My son was diagnosed at age 10. He had plenty of visible signs of improvement in his health after going gluten-free, but it took about 6 months for his bloodwork to go from positive to equivocal, then another 6 months to go from equivocal to negative. Along the way I found things here and there that were not gluten-free. (He does not react, so that makes...
  10. One of the first gluten-free foods I learned to make was waffles. Get Pamela's Ultimate Baking and Pancake mix, and the recipe is right on the package. I like to add a little vanilla and cinnamon. They always come out good. If you don't have a waffle maker, you can buy a cheap one for $20 or less. Then when you make waffles, let the leftover ones cool...
  11. We are going to Tampa for 2 days - Busch Gardens, possibly a baseball game one night, then on to my brother's new house in Port Charlotte. Any tips for restaurants in either area? Our hotel is just a mile away from Busch Gardens. Or local places to buy gluten-free foods? Busch Gardens has a meal plan - does anyone know if they have many gluten-free...
  12. Megs, I make pizza (Bette Hagman's recipe) almost every week. It is similar to the one posted by jerseyangel - includes Xanthan and gelatin. But when I make it, the dough is super sticky - forget about trying to roll it. The best way I have found is to always use parchment paper over your pan. I drop the dough onto the paper in a big blob, then...
  13. There is a very low gluten host that is made by Benedictine sisters at their convent in Clyde, Missouri. They have a website benedictinesisters.org My son (and 4 others in our parish) receive these. Our parish provides them. We started by talking to the priest upon my son's diagnosis 5 years ago, and at that time there was already another parishioner...
  14. When my son was diagnosed, pizza was the thing he missed the most, so I made it my quest to learn to make a good one. After many, many different recipes, I came across Bette Hagman's recipe from The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread. It has a lot of ingredients, so that can be intimidating, but it ended up being the best - by far - of all we tried. My son...
  15. I have been to Mama Jeans maybe 5 times total (in 5 years). I went just last week and bought some Udi's bread, which my son liked. But honestly, while they are big on organic foods, etc. I really don't find the gluten-free things I use there. I think Akins (on Battlefield) has a much better selection of the gluten-free things I use regularly. To save...
  16. We eat at Cielito Lindo (my son always gets hard tacos), Ruby Tuesday, Buffalo Wild Wings, Fuddruckers. As of this spring, Bud & Walt's Pizza & Pasta in Nixa now serves gluten-free pizza. I think they also can provide gluten-free salads and will cook your gluten-free pasta and add their sauces, etc, and were planning to add gluten-free brownies...
  17. My son was diagnosed at age 10 and is 15 now. ZonePerfect bars have been a lifesaver for us, both for school lunches and when he is playing sports - sometimes we will travel to a small town where they have few options available. Zone bars have a lot of protein, so they are filling. Not all the varieties are gluten-free, but many are. You can find...
  18. I just happened to catch the broadcast on our local morning news. I thought they did a nice job.
  19. We like Isabelle's Best gluten free pizza - we get it at Sam's Club - just under $14 for two good-sized pizzas (maybe 12 inch?). Very thin crust. I always add more pepperoni.
  20. Good luck - we went through this when my son was 10 - he was such a trooper! I think scarier for mom than him. And it's good to know what's going on so you can deal with it!
  21. I live in Springfield, Missouri. We have maybe 6 Wal-Mart stores, but only one has a gluten free section. It's not marked as such (no overhead sign), but it is maybe 25% of one of the grocery aisles. I'm told it's a test market.
  22. Since the meetings are only every other month, yes Roxanne sends a reminder e-mail a few days before each meeting. She also passes along tips to the copy list as they come in. That's how we heard about Bud and Walts Pizza - a couple of people on her copy list responded that they had been there and liked it. Our family went to Bud and Walt's the next...
  23. There is a support group run by Roxanne Mason, a dietician at St. John's. They meet every other month, usually in the Women's Heart Room at Hammons Heart Instititute. Email her at Roxanne.Mason@mercy.net The meetings are very low key - usually the "experienced" people bring gluten-free goodies that they made or a good product they found. We share...
  24. No HyVees in Springfield, but the Price Cutter Plus (their bigger stores, they have several) have a gluten-free section. Also Smillies IGA on Glenstone - they have a pretty good selection, I just forgot about them because I'm not often in that neighborhood.
