  1. Lastly eating gluten free is so expensive. I had no cravings for gluten type foods but I was spending a lot to get the right kind of stuff to eat. My family also are quite healthy and none want to do the gluten free diet. Which is not a big deal, except I have to practically eat seperately, shop seperately, and obviously no dining out. I am sorry...
  2. You are correct in stating that the IgA and IgG need to be as low as possible but zero is not necessary to achieve good results. I doubt you'd see anyone with a zero. That is why they give a range of normal, with lower numbers in that range being the goal. The autoimmune activity in this range would be so low that damage would not occur. I've come close to...
  3. The Whole Foods 365 brand of sunflower seeds are gluten-free....they are not processed in a facility with wheat. Whole Foods will list whether they are or not, clearly on the package. I have a package in my pantry and I double checked it. I always check for this as I cannot eat shared facility foods or I get sick. I eat these every day so it would not be...
  4. I'll echo what Janet said...Ireland is so easy to be a Celiac in, don't worry one little bit. I just returned from a trip there a month ago and there wasn't one person who didn't know what Celiac is and entails, as far as food prep is concerned. It was easy to eat anywhere and I didn't get sick from anything I ate in the country. Even the smallest shop had...
  5. Your very welcome! It must be hugely difficult to do this diet if you are asymptomatic. I was a classic Celiac with all the symptoms listed in the literature so it was a no brainer for me. I knew when I made a mistake but fortunately, those were rare moments. I did not have any repeat blood work done until my first year anniversary because my numbers...
  6. Yeah...I am perplexed by this thread because I cannot eat from shared lines as I am a sensitive Celiac yet have had no problems finding nuts and sunflower seeds which are safe. Whole Foods sells them, Trader Joe's sells them....never become sick from nuts. I have never run into nuts, except for the highly processed commercial brands, which share a line with...
  7. You have done a good job so far of bringing your levels down so congratulate yourself! You have not been gluten-free very long so your results are pretty good. All of these tests give a range and, although it is possible to bring them lower, they are not expected to be zero. You were tested using the newer Deamidated Gliadin testing and I am not totally...
  8. You don't have to avoid wheat in hair color unless you have a topical allergy to wheat. No one should ever get color into their mouths anyway and unless you are a hair chewer, it should not be a problem...as you have discovered. Color does not absorb into the skin as peroxide is used and that burns off quickly once it hits air. It's a chemical reaction. ...

You did?!?!? Where did you live? You can always do a private message if that's TMI to give away. We probably went to school together or something!
  10.  I think they should qualify for possible substance abuse status. Did I mention they come in rolls which make great sandwiches and hamburger buns? Especially when you brush them with olive oil and grill them first?
  11. I have had numerous oral surgeries, implants, etc. and about the only thing you have to be concerned about is checking to see if the pain meds are gluten-free. I always use Vicodin because it is gluten-free....the generic brand is gluten-free also. Never had a problem with it and it works beautifully on any pain you may have. Toothpastes....I have yet...

Although Barry's does offer a malted tea, I was able to purchase the regular type in the supermarket and used that in the hotel rooms. Wise choice because it's yummy tea! Awareness is pretty high here in Boston but not to the degree it was in Ireland. It's easy to figure out what contains gluten but trying to get the American restaurant industry or...

I was pretty aware of different practices in the Uk and Ireland as I have been there many times. Not all bread contains wheat starch there. I was not able to check all the bread I ate for suspect ingredients but I never became ill from those I could not verify. The ones I did were fine and the ones I couldn't would have made me very ill if they had contained...

Isn't the pace of life wonderful? Americans are so stressed out and grouchy. We do it to ourselves. Within days of returning from lovely, relaxed Ireland, I called my sister and told her I wanted to go back! She agreed.....it rained here for a week after we returned and people were practically jumping out of windows! All I heard was complaining and whining...
  15. Hi Anna....I read both of Dr. Peter Green's books on Celiac, one of which is just an updated version of the first one. I found the books informative and should be required reading for all Celiacs or suspected Celiacs. HOWEVER.......here's where I disagree with some of his advice. You have to remember that the good doctor is an AMA trained physician and old...

England and Scotland are pretty good with the gluten free stuff but not like Ireland! I have heard the same about Italy also but that makes sense. With all that gluten around, and being the foodies that they are, they would have to accommodate others. I buy Italian pasta imported from there and it's the very best I have ever had. I won't eat anything else...
  17. Not to be contradictory here but I weight train and because of the amount of exercise we do, I was told by one of the trainers that you need 1 gram of protein for every pound of body weight. This formula is for people who do exercise with weights 2-3 times per week, or more, and the amount is intended to build muscle. Amounts would probably be less for those...

Here is the link to the restaurant and menu....Open Original Shared Link Their fried stuff is not done in a dedicated fryer and I would suspect that lack of space is a huge factor in that. At least they are very up front about it. I ordered a side salad with my sandwich and it was delicious. The sandwiches are HUGE! We ate in some pricey restaurants...
  19. I went on a trip to Ireland at the beginning of May and I have to say that I have never been to a country which is so well versed and accommodating with regards to Celiac Disease. After 6 years gluten-free, I didn't have to think twice about what I was going to eat or whether or not they would get the meal right! When was the last time that happened to you...
  20. Dr. Oz is not any kind of authority on Celiac Disease. The show he had on the subject had errors in it and the fact that he used Elizabeth Hasselbeck as an authority on Celiac proved he's no different than most of the clueless physicians out there. The information on envelopes and the other foods listed have been Celiac myths for a long time but it's probably...

  22. The envelope issue is another Celiac myth....envelopes do not contain wheat. There was a recent article detailing safe foods and some non-food items like this which should never worry Celiacs and I will find it and post a link. The envelope issue was one of the top Celiac myths in this article. It's not something we need to worry about at all.
  23. You do not need to be healed 100% to start vigorous exercise again. You have been sick and run down but now are absorbing again. The one thing you will have to do is to start lower and work up again with the weights. You won't be able to jump right in and do what you used to right away. But you need to start somewhere so pick up those 8 pound weights and...
