  1. Hi Jenny! The gluten-free drug list is available at: www.glutenfreedrugs.com It's a very comprehensive listing and has saved my butt on a number of occasions when I could not get in touch with a manufacturer. I was surprised that Synthroid cannot guarantee gluten-free status because of the number of people with thyroid disease that was caused by undiagnosed...
  2. I was looking through the gluten free drug list over Christmas as I was in need of some medication for a cold and noticed that Synthroid had a notation after it saying that all strengths of the drug could no longer be guaranteed as being gluten-free. Not sure why but thought it important to point out to all those taking it. I use Levoxyl myself, which is...
  3. Actually, I know 3 women who are close to me who were diagnosed with breast cancer and only one was diagnosed through screening. The other 2 were going for those so called "important screenings" and were told they were fine....no problems. Within 3 months, both detected lumps ON THEIR OWN and were diagnosed after they went on the warpath with their doctors...
  4. Your information is correct, Marie, and going gluten-free with skin products (except lip products) is totally a choice issue. Some feel they will be glutened when they wash their hair or use hand lotion so if they choose to use gluten-free products, that's OK too but not necessary. It all depends on how careful you are. The way to see whether or not you are...
  5. The only drawback to using the library is they don't let you keep the books very long and most newbies will absolutely be using the books for reference for at least 6 months. They are invaluable to own, at least in the beginning. These books do not cost much, I think I spent about $30.00 on 2 of them total and that's not a budget buster. Amazon has good prices...
  6. I have no idea what your financial situation is but if you really feel the need to see a dietician, it's money well spent. Having said that, I think if you went out and bought a couple of good books on Celiac Disease, you would learn far more than just sitting there, listening to a dietician who may or may not know anything about celiac disease. Nutritionists...
  7. I was on Nystatin and the Candida diet for a couple of years prior to diagnosis of celiac disease and it worked extremely well for me. A couple of things of note.....you have to take Nystatin for a long time to kill off all problematic yeast overgrowth so 20 days will not do it. There will be a period when the yeast goes thru "die-off" when the person treated...
  8. HA! I should show this to my mother who angrily said to me one day....."I do NOT have Celiac Disease, it's IBS. My doctor told me so!" She's not going to like this......
  9. I'm a yuppie, by definition, and paid for all my screening tests because my insurance would not cover them. I did not go through my PCP so they refused to cover any testing. And free time? I work 50 hours per week so this yuppie has little free time. Blood screening is not that expensive and I have found that many people will spend money on crap but then...
  10. I guess I should define what hidden gluten actually means. I believe the Wellshire Farms problem was due to the company not being careful with their manufacturing processes? That's not a hidden gluten problem, it's a cross contamination problem. And if they do not batch test their supposed gluten free product, then they cannot claim it's gluten free. ...
  11. I am very sorry for the loss of your brother BUT if he was not a Celiac and had chronic diarrhea and weight loss, that IS a symptom of cancer. Doesn't matter whether or not he had pre-existing conditions in his case. Those 2 symptoms are symptoms of cancer and should have a doctor's attention. If he was a Celiac with on-going, severe problems, then further...

I think, Welda, that you should receive an honorary medical degree! Good luck with your writing...what a fantastic way to teach others about Celiac! Roda......I also have a big interest in nutrition and that's the main reason I did so well on the gluten-free diet and had little problems adjusting. When you know food and what's in it, that's a big...
  13. Let me see if I can't make myself clearer for you.....don't want to upset your goat! My comments were aimed at those individuals who have no pre-existing conditions, other than the Celiac symptoms, which would make cancer more of a risk factor. This is what I mean by using your common sense. Farmer has other family members with Celiac and has tested VERY...
  14. I would agree with you on this and I think one of the most often given piece of advice that is not true is the "hidden gluten" idea. Wheat has to be listed as an ingredient if it is in the product. I think where people become confused, especially if new to this lifestyle, is their not-yet-learned knowledge of what some food components are and whether they...

Roda......you are an extremely observant individual! One thing I have learned, and it was as much a surprise to me as it probably was to you, was that most of the medical profession are more, or just as clueless about food and nutrition as the general population. You would think that they would be more informed considering their profession but they are not...
  16. I don't know where in NH you live but I live in Mass. and now have power restored. I was a little freaked out at first but when I really thought about it, it's not that hard and very do-able. First off, are you near to any restaurants that are in operation? I realize some are out of power also but, unless you have multiple food issues, going out can be done...
  17. The vast majority of potato chips, real potato chips, are naturally gluten-free so for those that cannot find the brand your recommend, there are many others to choose from which will not present a problem. It doesn't have to say gluten free on a package for it to be gluten free.
  18. OOPS! I meant to say....."they taste better than the gluten filled version! This is why I need to wear my glasses all the time!
  19. Exactly!!!!!! I guess I was lucky because from the first moment of diagnosis, I never looked back and never miss anything related to gluten. There has been very little food I have not been able to duplicate in a gluten-free version and they taste batter than the gluten-free version also.
  20. If you want to have the test done and see how much damage your gut has, then by all means ask your doctor for the test. I was also diagnosed on blood work alone because I failed every test by very large numbers and I was a poster child in appearance for celiac disease. However, I was so sick at the time and not holding any food down, the thought of a scope...
  21. Mark.....first off, for a 23 year old, you are well spoken and your spelling is spot on! I only say this because it's rare these days! Maybe I can answer your questions for you, from my "old timer" perspective! I hate that term but, truthfully, I am 49 years old and probably fit that category in some ways....at least from your perspective. I was...
  22. It's people like yourself that are smart enough to make the connection that help to prove what I have thought for a long time..... there is really no separate disease state/disorder called ADD/ADHD. I truly believe that the vast majority of people who are told this are suffering from symptoms of a food allergy or intolerance, which affects them neurologically...
  23. I have never had any problems with eating disorders and as a Celiac, am not at all food obsessed. I can see how that might be a problem though. I only have gluten and dairy to avoid so those with more restricted diets would feel very deprived, especially in this country where many are overly obsessed with food to begin with. I do not agree at all with the...
  24. Fainting is absolutely connected to Celiac Disease but most doctors miss this completely. I had a couple of whooper fainting spells towards the end stage before I was diagnosed. One of them occurred in a restaurant, much to my embarrassment and ended up with an ambulance trip to the ER. Once there, they discovered I was severely anemic, which was no surprise...
