I think that peanut kiss story turned out to be wrong (unless there were multiple cases). I found this story online: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Believing Food Manufactuers
Tim-n-VA replied to cernacki's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It is largely a personal choice. Trying to summarize a lot of messages on this board is difficult but it seems that most people, thru trial and error, find a few companies that they trust and stick with those. Kraft is one that is frequently listed as one with trustworthy labels. A similar issue is the "shared equipment" warning. Some completely avoid... -

ARCHIVED Do I Really Need To Know What I Have?
Tim-n-VA replied to one more mile's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is pretty clear that if you want to know what not to eat to feel better, you have all of the information you need. But, since you asked and because people lurk without asking, I'll give one view on why someone might want to know what they really have. There are at least three subsystems of the body that can react to gluten. You can have an autoimmune... -
Should have posted this sooner to have time to get responses but I'm taking a long Labor Day weekend and traveling from DC to Cooperstown, NY. Any recommendations for restaurants in that area? Other than the Hall of Fame, any opinions on other attractions in the area?

I was feeling a little creative and trying to use stuff I happened to have on hand. This is what I did: Combined melted butter, some pre-packaged Italian seasonings, black pepper and pre-packaged shredded potatoes (Simply Potato brand). I pressed that into a 9x13 casserole and baked it until it just started to turn brown. I then topped the potatos...

ARCHIVED Gf Cornbread - The Best!
Tim-n-VA replied to luvs2eat's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Most of the cornbread mixes (Jiffy, etc.) will have wheat flour so that might be why some people are thinking that cornbread is not allowed. On a side note, can anyone explain why the "scant" modifier is used in recipes? It just looks strange to me to see a precise measure like "1/4 cup" and then have a word there that means "but not really, a little... -
ARCHIVED No Biopsy Ordered
Tim-n-VA replied to LDJofDenver's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Different tests for the same condition are an attempt to eliminate false positives and that is the main reason they are ordered. Ordering tests just to make money is an accusation that there is no statistical evidence for either way. Obviously there are some who believe it is widespread. I'm in the group that thinks it is more lawsuit aversion. Dietary... -
ARCHIVED Happy Discovery---cornmeal Pancakes
Tim-n-VA replied to samcarter's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I tried mixing a gluten-free cornmeal and cooking the batter on a waffle iron. I then put chili and cheese over the cornbread waffle. With different topping they would work for breakfast. -
ARCHIVED For Those Without Symptoms - How Did You Know You Had Celiac?
Tim-n-VA replied to susanm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For me it was fluctuations on routine liver tests. That lead to a series of tests to eliminate possible causes. In retrospect, I was probably not completely symptom free with occasional, seemingly random upset stomach episodes being related to high gluten consumption (wheat beer, pancake breakfast, etc.) -
ARCHIVED Celiac Blood Tests Were Negative
Tim-n-VA replied to marissa088's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I will disagree that an allergy test will not find gluten intolerance. It might just seem semantics but gluten intolerance is used in a lot of different ways, many times meaning "something bad happens when I eat gluten". If all you want is to feel better - and that is a personal decision - and gluten makes you feel bad, stop eating it (as stated before... -
ARCHIVED Test Results - Why Do I Need A Biopsy?
Tim-n-VA replied to susanm's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac is a disease that overlaps symptoms with other diseases. Some other diseases, especially auto-immune diseases could cause a false positive on the blood tests. A positive biopsy along with a positive blood test mimimizes the chance of a false diagnosis that could happen with just blood tests. Many people one this site will tell you that a positive... -
ARCHIVED Still Drinking Regular Beer - No Problems
Tim-n-VA replied to Mountaineer Josh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
JNBunnie1 - Sorry. I was reading to quickly and missed your meaning. Still, has there been a medical test to determine that your rash is Dermatitis Herpetiformis versus a rash from the number of other things that cause a rash. Not that it matters in the specific case but I was trying to make the more general point that self-diagnosed celiacs are not always... -
ARCHIVED Still Drinking Regular Beer - No Problems
Tim-n-VA replied to Mountaineer Josh's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is so much variation from human to human it is hard to generalize. I'm not sure what "... I definitely have Celiac and I always tested negative..." means considering that celiac overlaps other diseases/conidtions in symptoms, etc. A true wheat allergy could symtomatically be exactly like classic celiac symtoms, test negative on all standard celiac... -
ARCHIVED Retarded Blue Shield
Tim-n-VA replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Since members of this forum probably read more medical stuff than any group not employed by the health care industry, I have a slightly off topic question. Has anyone seen any studies that evaluate medical innovation by medical system - i.e. government funded versus for profite, etc? The potential concern would be that with profits capped, companies would... -
Buttermilk Falls, just south of Ithaca, NY is a relatively large fall. There is a trail along the stream that passes several smaller falls. This is about one mile up the trail.

First of all, on any weight loss plan, I would discount the first week or so and your body is adjusting. Beyond that, long term extreme weight loss (more than a pound a week or so) stress the body, especially the liver. Added note: After I submitted my reply I noticed you also have a waterfall picture for an avatar. I took the one I use near Ithaca...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Restaurants In Washington, Dc?
Tim-n-VA replied to slmprofesseur's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
What part of SW Va? I frequently visit family around Abingdon and am always looking for gluten free option there or along I-81. -
Soy alone is not a problem due to celiac. Some confusion comes from the fact that many brands of soy sauce have wheat. Many diseases/conditions occur in clusters so it is not unusual for someone who has a problem with gluten to have problems with other items which could include soy. There was at least one member in the past who insisted her medical...

Another perspective. If you have celiac disease that does not prevent you from having other diseases/conditions that could be helped by Benadryl. Also, celiac is sometimes tricky to diagnose because it shares symtoms with other diseases to include some wheat allergies. Someone with a true wheat allergy would feel better on a gluten free diet and would...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Restaurants In Washington, Dc?
Tim-n-VA replied to slmprofesseur's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
There is a Chipotle in that area (many threads here on the pros/cons regarding cc). There is also a BBQ place called Red, Hot and Blue that doesn't have a gluten free menu but I've survived work lunches at their other locations by getting one of their all meat platters - not ideal. Assuming you are going to take the Metro and do the tourist thing. The... -
I was wondering the same thing. I use the "view new posts" link all the time and doesn't appear to have changed for me (I use IE 7, different browsers can make a difference). I've never seen a button. Since this might just be jargon, a button to me means something that you click, usually outlined with a box and perhaps a graphic. For example, while...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Restaurants In Washington, Dc?
Tim-n-VA replied to slmprofesseur's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Most of the chain restaurants that are mentioned on this site have locations in the area. A local chain - Austin Grill - serves Tex-Mex and they have a gluten free menu. Do you know what area you'll be staying in. I'm not familar with the Maryland suburbs but someone might have specific suggestions for that side of town. -
ARCHIVED Lame Advertisement? What Gives...
Tim-n-VA replied to RissaRoo's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
I understand the concept and intent of the auto-substituting but when it hits someone unintentionally it seems mean spirited. Does that substituted text have to say "lame advertisment"? I've seen other boards just replace the offending word with ####. It has the same effect (blocking unwanted text) without making false accusations. -
