ARCHIVED It's Official - Hershey's "chocolate" . . .
Tim-n-VA replied to home-based-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I did a few searches yesterday and apparently this does not apply to all of their products. As a general rule, if it is just chocolate it this would not apply. If it is chocolate with other stuff (nuts, etc.) it might apply. The key is to look at the ingredients (like we all do) and see if it lists cocoa butter or vegetable oil. Today when I was waiting... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Toothpaste For Toddler
Tim-n-VA replied to nitu-752002's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Has anyone ever found a toothpaste (or any dental product) that definitely has gluten. I know there are companies that have the standard legal statement about not being able to guarantee what their suppliers do and some will state gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Progresso Soup
Tim-n-VA replied to tkm831's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had it, no gluten reactions. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Vs. Wheat Intolerance Vs. Celiac
Tim-n-VA replied to nitu-752002's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't think this is semantics but I've read that Celiac is defined as an autoimmune disease, where the body -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed By A Gluten Free Diet Alone?
Tim-n-VA replied to dizzygrinch's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Diagnose what? That something bad happens when you consume gluten? That can be done by diet alone. That might be enough. Celiac on the other hand is a specific body response (auto immune) to gluten that mimics or overlaps with symptoms potentially caused by other things including an allergic reaction to gluten. I don't think you can get a true differential... -
ARCHIVED Blooms Grocery Store
Tim-n-VA replied to HeyItsA's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For what its worth, the Bloom chain has the same parent company as the Food Lion chain so they are going to be generally in the same areas (centered around VA/NC). -
ARCHIVED Upside-down Pizza Casserole
Tim-n-VA replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I tried this tonight except I used Pamela's baking mix. I did 1/2 more than the waffle recipe and didn't whip the eggs whites separately. In a 9x13 pan it made a thicker crust than I would have preferred but it was still pretty good. I put a little Italian seasoning mix in the batter. -
ARCHIVED Cheese Cake - I Am New Here.
Tim-n-VA replied to jamiedolan's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've made crust for cheesecake using gluten-free cookies. I've successfully used ginger snaps and Pamela's brand sugar cookies. I just crumble them, put in a little melted butter and press into that pan. -
ARCHIVED You've Got To Try This...3 Minute Chocolate Cake
Tim-n-VA replied to RissaRoo's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you. I think 3 minutes is a little too long in my microwave so next time I'll cut back. Still it was great, just a little dry so I made a small amount of glaze with powdered sugar and water and pour over it. -
ARCHIVED Celiac V.s. Gluten Intollerant
Tim-n-VA replied to sugarsue's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Even with people that get the diagnosis, there is variation in reactions/symtoms. If you feel bad after you eat gluten you have some type of gluten sensitivity. The different names have some benefit in that you know which body system is reacting (allergy, auto-immune, digestive) but the day-to-day implicatoins are the same - don't eat gluten. I personnally... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Reliable?
Tim-n-VA replied to MelissaJ80's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
First let me apologize if you thing I'm targeting you in any way. I post here only because I think I might occasionally have some perspective that would help someone else. Otherwise I'd just read the parts I need. Having been on several of these boards it seems that most people don't read every message. When I see something posted that is clearly wrong... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Reliable?
Tim-n-VA replied to MelissaJ80's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
A postive response to a gluten free diet is evidence that you shouldn't eat gluten. It is not a positive test for Celiac. If you care which body system is reacting to the gluten, other tests are required. If you only want to know what to eat today, the dietary response is sufficient. Everyone has a different desire of diagnosis from the medical community... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests Reliable?
Tim-n-VA replied to MelissaJ80's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That quote is from the webite of Open Original Shared Link. Free information on the internet is not always accurate. You now have two answers on whether you can get a false positive. I'm don't know what real answer is but my understanding of testing procedures is that all tests have the potential for false negatives and positives. -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Wheat
Tim-n-VA replied to LuckotheeIrish1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The gluten is the protein in the grain portion of the wheat. IF you can remove this protein completely (or to the CODEX in Europe), you have gluten free wheat products. Note that I'm just explaining the theoretical concept of gluten-free wheat not advocating anyone try it. -
I've occasionally ran into people who thought celiacs shouldn't have soy. I think the most logical explanation is that many brands of soy sauce do have wheat. If all you have is a list of igredients to avoid you might think soy sauce implies all soy.

ARCHIVED Niagara Falls, Ontario
Tim-n-VA replied to pixiegirl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I was there last fall for two evenings. One night we ate at "Shoeless Joe's" (on the corner near the casino). Perhaps I got lucky but despite having no gluten free menu the waiter was very knowledgeable about gluten and talked to the kichen staff. The other place we ate was the Keg (they apparently have several locations) in the Embassy Suites. Again... -
ARCHIVED Sleep Number Bed = Toxic Mold
Tim-n-VA replied to CarlaB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I googled this because a friend's parents have one of these beds. Putting things together from a couple of sites (or you can do your own search for sleep number mold), there really was nothing about where the mold comes from except that the issue isn't so much as where they come from but if there is a favorable environment. Poor air circulation around the... -
ARCHIVED Whole And 2% Milk A No-no?
Tim-n-VA replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The issue is underlying causes. There is nothing about celiac that makes a person unable to have milk. Depending on the nature of damage to the villi, an unhealed celiac might have problems but that would be due to damage not the celiac directly. Once off gluten and completely healed, there is no reason for a celiac to avoid milk. Of course, being celiac... -
ARCHIVED Captain Morgan's
Tim-n-VA replied to lobita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't think I misread. They put the wheat paste into the crozes and then fit the head into the crozes. -
ARCHIVED Captain Morgan's
Tim-n-VA replied to lobita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to that article, they coat the grove that the lid goes into with wheat paste, not the entire barrel. Also, this is just one barrel source. The risk is there but hard to quantify. -
ARCHIVED Salary Negotiations
Tim-n-VA replied to *lee-lee*'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I will say that when I've been on the other side of that that it can look weird if the prospective employee keeps changing his/her requirements. Don't they know what they want? On the other hand, a low salary is long term trap. All future pay raises, etc. are most likely going to be based on applying a percentage to your current salary. You need... -
ARCHIVED Codex, 20ppm? 200ppm ?
Tim-n-VA replied to gfp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not sure point that you intended here but I'm a little concerned that someone might read it as 1 in 40 people react to an amount as little as 10mg/day. Remember that the people in the study are biopsy confirmed celiacs so that would be only 1 in 40 of celiacs or 1 in 5320 of the general population (using 1 in 133 as the rate for celiac). Also, the bottom... -
ARCHIVED Bookstores Suck
Tim-n-VA replied to cookiequeen's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The Borders near me has a pretty good selection but they are not where I firest expected to find them although in retrospect probably in the right place. I first looked in cookbooks and diet. I found them in medical - diseases and conditions. -
ARCHIVED Cooperstown, Ny Recommendations
