  1. Does celiac run in my family? yes my grandfather was diagnosed with it 4 months after my daughter... my daughter was the first diagnosed case in my family How did I know to test my daughter? I didn't really, its a long story 1. My daughters symptoms (just vomiting) started suddenly one day she was fine and the next day something was WRONG ...
  2. I agree with many of the posters on this one... really its up to the parents to provide appropriate food for their children. Even if it means more $$ spent on our end. There are things that you can request that I do think are appropriate. Thinks like: 1. Advanced notification of special party days so that you can provide Pizza for you child if the...
  3. I know a friend of mind has had great luck reducing ear infections with Garlic oil! Her son still seems to catch other things all the time but rarely gets ear infections anymore.
  4. My daughter was diagnosed at 18 months old via blood work and endoscopy. Knowing more about things now I would have done things a bit differently. I'd go gluten free and see if that helps... if it does I'd have my Dr. order the cheek swab genetic test to see if she was a carrier of the gene (as far as I'm concerned a positive reaction to a gluten free...
  5. I agree it is a great book! I'm so glad I read it! It helps to clear up the false information you can find on the internet I recommend it all the time!
  6. My insurance covers the gene test 100% I wish I had done that instead of going about it different ways.... oh well we live... we learn (I didn't even know it was genetic... when I asked the Dr. told me "no" but it does run in families" *roll eyeS*
  7. I'd maybe try the Gluten free Cheerios (Perky O's are the ones that I use) I found some popcorn cakes the other day that would work because they are turned into batter then baked into cakes (so no kernels or anything) cant remember the name. Envirokids Gluten free animal Crookes they dissolve quickly but are smaller than say a GRaham cracker
  8. opy to look for eosinophilic gastroenteritis or esophagitis. We also had her blood drawn yesterday for RAST allergy tests to the top 8 foods, just to rule that out. So, I am very familiar with the diet as I have been on it for almost 1.5 years and DS almost a year. I am not familiar with some of the items for younger kids (animal crackers, cookies...
  9. I've taken my daughter to farms, circuses, and even let her feed the animals at the petting zoo She's 2 now and knows that she can't eat anything with Gluten in it so I tell her that it has gluten in it and we need to wash her hands after Its a royal pain from my point of view because I have to be a watch dog to make sure she doesn't put it in her...
  10. 've found that I need to up the fat in recipes (even gluten free ones) to keep moisture levels somewhat normal If you can do dairy I suggest using whole Milk or buttermilk
  11. I felt guilty for a while... but I'm not sure if it was guilt or it was more hurt that my daughter had something "wrong" with her. I felt like I needed to blame someone to get rid of the horrible feeling that something was WRONG with her so I blamed myself. Replaced the feeling of disappointment and sadness with blame. Then I felt guilty for feeling badly...
  12. We have the Triumph dining cards and love them I carry the American one in my wallet in case we end up at a place I am unsure about. EVERY time I have used it the Chef has come out to go over it with me and then he or she brings my daughter her food and double and tripple checks what she has gotten. So far she has not been glutened when we have been...
  13. California Baby is expensive but good and gluten free
  14. Oh boy do I remember how you feel! It was an up and down roller coaster for a few months for me. One minute I was glad we knew what was going on with my daughter and happy that all we had to do was change her diet, the next minute I was sad because of all the things she would be "missing" I can tell you know I've noticed a lot of positives: 1. My daughter...
  15. So I need a place to vent... my 2 year old has learned how to vault out of her crib and refuses to stay in bed for a nap! Any tips on keeping her in bed???
  16. Is it itching like crazy??? If yes I would suspect DH if not it may be a viral rash or a karatosis of some sort.
  17. My daughter was diagnosed at 18 months as well! I promise in a few months this will be much easier! I remember being completely overwhelmed and thinking that she would never be able to eat anything good. -Kraft does a great job at labeling their foods... if it doesn't have anything bad listed its gluten free! (Nabisco too they are the same company...
  18. I would call the pizza facility and ask to talk with the manager. Explain your fears about coming and ask what ways they will be willing to accommodate you. We have a pizza place here that makes a "low carb" pizza that is gluten free...Basically its pizza toppings baked in a bowl The owners wife is allergic to wheat so when I asked about cross contamination...
  19. I just had my daughters b-day party Saturday! It was her first b-day party since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I made 1 gluten free cake and had only gluten free snacks and food at the party... I figured its her part everything there should be food she could safely eat! Plus then I didn't have to be the watch dog when it came to food with my daughter...
  20. My daughter was diagnosed with celiac Disease and was not even close to FtT! At her lowest weight she was still in the 56% fo her age and height! Her chart did drop from 98th percentile to the 56th but that drop happened after she had the blood test done... she was still in the 90 something percentile when her blood results came back! So tell your ped...
  21. Though my daughter did eventually start throwing up she had what the Dr.'s called atypical symptoms. 1. She never had diahreah but was constipated 2. Her stomach was not bloated (until the week that we had the biopsy done) 3. She began to loose weight she was in the 95% at her 15 month check up and at her 18 month checkup (the day before her biopsy...
  22. My daughter was diagnosed at 18 months old because she was showing symptoms and was the first in the family to show symptoms. For my next child (not pregnant currently) I plan on having them test him/her for the celiac genes using cord blood right away so that I'll know for school and stuff. (Our entire house is gluten free so its only important for me...
  23. My daughter was diagnosed at 18 months old (she'll be 2 next week) Her only symptom before being diagnosed was vomiting... what you describe with your son is exactly what I saw in my daughter. We have been on a gluten free diet for 5+ months now and still when she has been accidentally gluten ed (at a friends house or eating out) I don't know until I change...
  24. WE had flaxseeds to anythign we can and I also add fibersure to pasta sauces, eggs, even juices when I need an extra boost... it is 100% gluten free no wheat at all
