  1. The first lot I did I eat some of them but becuase of the way the cook, they are a bit odd. I think the problem might be more with the texture. Of the few I did try I could sort of taste that they were meant to be crumpets. It's a bit hard to describe since the finished product I ended up with is not like anything I've had before. Let us know how you...
  2. Tried the Woolworths Crumpet mix again and it was another disaster. Managed not to burn them this time but still got nothing like a crumpet. As before I ended up with something like a pikelet on one side and a crusty naan bread on the other. Also they don't cook in the centre no matter how thin I put the batter in. Shame, I've never had a problem with their...
  3. It used to cost about $10 here. I was more than happy to pay that much because there were so many exhibitors and I could buy stuff that is usually hard to find. Nevermind I wiil go to the one run by the society in future, cheaper to get in and I can have everything. I expect to pay more for gluten-free but it annoys me that some places now seem to be...
  4. The expo in Brisbane this year was combined with Good food and wine show. I reluctantly paid the $20 entry fee. It was such a waste of money. The gluten free section was exteremly small and there was no gluten-free food available at the cafes. Most the exhibitors were ones whose products are easlily availble in supermarkets or health food shops. I have...
  5. I'm not sure if the Aldis in NSW/ACT will stock the gluten free bread. The ones stocked up here are by a company called Wild Breads who are based in South East Queenslnad. Also re the fish- A few of the woolies I've been into are stocking it in the "normal" frozen fish section instead of the gluten free one. It's in a blue and white box.
  6. I'm in Brisbane. For finding new products I use the internet, or just check the health food stores/aisles of the supermarket. I like the Freedom foods biscuits and some of the Woolworths brand are good as well. Some Kettle chips are now gluten free, otherwise a lot of flavoured rice crackers are good. Also Woolworths are stocking a new brand of crumbed...
  7. Not sure where you're from but Australian made m&ms aren't gluten-free. Some places sell the the American ones, I haven't checked for awhile but they used to be fine.
  8. It is possible but usually this will be declared on the label, I've never noticed any warnings on the packet but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Not sure how new you are to been gluten-free but another possibility is the wheat glucose syrup. Although technically gluten free some very sensitive people find they react to it. Also consider where...
  9. I'm Very very excited. Today I bought gluten-free bread rolls and pitta bread from COLES The brand is called Livwell, which is an amazing brand from the uk. The bread roll didn't crumble, was soft, and had a "crust" on it like a proper bread roll. I could also slice it easily. Don't know about the rest of you but I often find gluten-free bread rolls...
  10. I heard back from coles. Apparently it is only the glucose syrup that contains the wheat. They say they have labled it in accordance with food standards. I know they are toughening up on the labeling rules, but I can't help thinking it's going to make it more complicated. I know it will be great for those who are really sensitive but surely there is some...
  11. Found lots of new stuff at Coles today. The first thing is the food for kids apple bars. They are fairly small but a good snack size. The filling was really nice. The "cakey" bit is ok, it has a slight bi carb taste to it but not as much as the Leda or nurture ones in my opinion. The second thing I tried is the vege chip twists. They are cheese flavoured...
  12. If it says gluten free on the label then you are right it overrides whatever is listed in the ingredients as they will be so highly processed like the glucose syrup they no longer contain gluten. According to my ingredients book the highly processed ones are: 1. glucose syrup from wheat 2. Caramel colour (150) from wheat 3. Dextrose from wheat. I believe...
  13. It does make it hard. With the Marshmallows maybe there was starch or a wheat derived flavours. If that's the case then they don't need to have it in brackets after as long as they say in the contains statement. I know that some people with coeliac can't have the wheat glucose syrup but I thought that was why it's usually declared in the listing. I know...
  14. I ended up submitting feedback on their website. I'm not sure I will get a reply. I will be a bit embarrassed if they write back and say I missed something obvious in the ingredients list
  15. A lot will say contains gluten if it has wheat glucose in it because they don't want to take the chance of cross contamination. That's what they told me anyway! Yea I guess the issue with this one is that the contains bit underneath the ingredients list said contains wheat (glucose syrup). They way the ingredients list is written, this implies that the...
  16. Be careful of the new coles branded icecream. I looked at the bubblegum one today. If you read the ingredients listing the only suspect thing is wheat glucose syrup. It does have flavours and thickeners etc in it but nothing to say gluten in brackets after it. Then underneath the ingredients list it says contains wheat (glucose syrup) followed by other...
  17. I don't feel so bad now. I'm certainly not about to get an traineeship in one of Jamie Olivers' restaurants but I can do more than steak and veg. At least I usually manage to end up with something that resembles what I was trying to cook- especially when it's out of a packet. I tried the donuts, they were tasty. Just don't try to skimp the oil, or they...
  18. Did anyone else try the Macro crumpet mix yet? I had a go yesterday and it didn't work to well. I've ended up with some strange cross between a pikelet, crumpet and a naan bread. Mine didn't really bubble on the top, of the few that did they burst when I flipped them. So I ended up with two flat sides. Also had a bit trouble with cooking them evenly...
  19. Has anyone managed to find the food health kids bars that were advertised in the last Coeliac magazine? They came in apple or banana custard and are meant to be available at Coles, Woolies and health food shops but I haven't seen them anywhere. Also I found something very exciting at coles the other day. They have increased the gluten-free frozen food...
  20. You sure can. Not only crumpets but bagels, englsih muffins and naan bread. The crumpets I tried were from tesco, I didn't have a toaster and still enjoyed them. Also if you can get to to a waitrose you should try the croissants - They even had chocolate filled ones. Another thing to try is Genius bread, edible without a microwave and it was almost normal...
  21. Does anyone ever use any online stores to buy gluten-free foods? Which ones do you use? I have found a few who stock different breads and pastry products than what I can buy from the supermarket or health food store but not sure how reliable they are. For some reason most of the health food shops I go to have gotten extremely slack with the variety of...
  22. For anyone from or who has travelled to the uk I have found a online grocery shop that exports groceries overseas. They have a special diet food section that includes things like naan bread, bagels and crumpets, which I've not been able to find in Australia. There are also a few other things in the other sections which are gluten-free, but aren't labelled...
  23. I did a bit more research, I think that our mate is gluten free. It is sold as marmite in the UK. It is available from some coles stores. Ensurre that it our mate and not the sanitarium branded marmite which is manufactured in NZ and not gluten-free.
  24. Freedom Foods used to make something called vege spread. Personally I like mightymite better. It does take awhile to get used to the taste. I usually mix it in with the butter, it helps with the texture.
  25. Hey there. I went to London last year. I found it a bit difficult for the first day or so but this was manily due to the fact that I didn't have acsess to a kitchen. As for lunches most starbucks do a gluten-free sandwich- tuna, spinach and sundried tomato. I went to south kensington once, I found hard to find a place advertising gluten-free but a lot of...
