  1. He put me on aciphex. I think it's similar. I guess, I have had really awful heartburn. But it only appeared a couple of months ago; the D and malabsorption have been going on well over a year. So I would suspect that the gastritis is a response to other trouble. There are a lot of causes of gastritis, though, so goodness only knows what it means...
  2. So I had my upper GI endoscopy on Tuesday. The doc said my duodenum looked healthy, my bile duct was sound, esophagus just fine, but I had inflammation in the stomach. He's still worried about the D, so we're doing a colonoscopy on Monday. But he seemed like he thought many of my symptoms could be explained by this. I was just wondering, did anyone...
  3. Wow. That sounds EXACTLY like me. So that's related to gluten, too, huh? My dad had his out, and my mom will probably have hers out, too...she thought she had a problem with it, but they found a large mucous filled cyst the size of a turkey leg in her intestine. They decided that was causing her problems. So they didn't take her gallbladder. That was...
  4. Well, there are a couple of different kinds. Neither are perfect. One allergy panel, which is the kind prescriped by most regular allergy doctors, only tests for IgE. This antibody is specific to allergic responses, which are a very specific kind of intolerance. The other type measures IgG to certain foods. This one is controversial. My understanding...
  5. Hi Rez, Did you mean the ELISA for anti-gliadin and anti-tissue transglutaminase, or an allergy panel?
  6. Noglugirl- That's such a painful story to hear. I have some questions about your gallbladder problems, though. I have attacks of pains under my right ribcage; it feels like somebody is stabbing me in the ribs. They'll last for about 20 minutes, and then subside to a dull ache. The only way to cope is to curl up into a ball on the floor and not move...
  7. Rachel, Nisla, Carla, Andrea, Tarnalberry, Richard, Steve, Beverly, JerseyAngel....I'm sure I'm missing people. Ya'll have been sooooo helpful. I'm such a newbie, and still having so many symptoms. I'm learning the science stuff fast, but when it comes to the everyday life stuff, you all don't even know how helpful you've been. When I've been at my...
  8. Rez...it wouldn't let me quote you, so.... You said: "I find you to be very bright and knowledgeable and feel that your posts are very beneficial to us all. Here's where I stand: My son tested positive for gluten and casein sensitivity. He also has a double copy of the DQ2 gene. The diet is hard when you take out gluten, casein, and now possibly...
  9. I had a conversation with a med student friend the other day, about dehydration and homeostasis. She said that your body becomes accustomed to your normal amount of water intake. So if you drink a ton of water everyday, over time, your body will start to give you "thirst" signals when you're not really dehydrated. If you persistently don't get enough water...
  10. I second the Enterlab tests. They are the same exact tests as the blood tests except that they use fecal matter to test; this is more sensitive, because the antibodies they test for are made in the gut, not the blood. They also do a gene test, which is the most complete one available, I think. The gene tests are great because they can help you deduce the...
  11. Canola is made from rapeseed...which can be a problem. It has high levels of erucic acid than other oils, but canola itself was developed to have lower levels than regular ol' rapeseed oil. Rape is in the mustard family, so if you have any trouble with mustard or mustard greens, you may not respond well to canola oil.
  12. Hi Judy, I have had malabsorption for a year and a half (at least that's how long I've observed it; the test was a couple of weeks ago and in the "extremely severe" category. But I haven't lost any weight. Now, that seems to be the first question every doctor asks me: "Have you lost weight?" and I feel as though I should be ashamed that I haven...
  13. Or maybe drink ginger ale or gatorade; water by itself is good, but some glucose and electrolytes are even better.... When I was in Africa for three months last summer, the gatorade powder I brought with me was truly my saving grace. I was living in a village several hours from anywhere with electricity. Our water came from borehole (deep pump well)...
  14. I definitely do have bad reflux...it's basically 24/7 now. The thing is, the nausea started much sooner. The reflux has only gotten bad over the last couple of months, where the nausea and loose stools have been around for a year and a half. So I'm tending to think that the reflux is another symptom of whatever else is going on. I'll definitely consider...
  15. Well, if it's a gene having to do with nitrogen, it may well have to do with a barley lectin. I think gliadin is a lectin, right? I read an article about tomato lectins reducing hog nitrogen output...maybe there isn't a connection, but it seems as though there's some nitrogen/lectin thing....anyone know off the top of their head?
  16. Actually, I believe the enterolab tests use the ELISA method. ELISA stands for Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay. It works like this: plastic plates are used, that have close to 100 little wells, about half a cm across. In the bottoms of these wells are antibodies. Antibodies are shaped like Ys. The tail part binds to the plastic of the plate, while...
  17. Thank so much for all your support and advice, everybody! Jenn, I'll do my best to answer your questions below: It's so hard to explain to people that stress is *not* what's making me sick. Being sick is making me stressed! My doctor was trying to pin it on my qual exam. I was like, well, I took one in June and wasn't this sick then. I wasn't...
  18. It's true that Dr. Fine hasn't presented much factual epidemiologic evidence; but he presents some statistics from his studies on his site. The first reason I trusted it is because the biological justification seems sound, from what I know of immunology. The second reason is because Dr. Fine's CV is really sound; full of publications with top-level...
  19. I'm so glad you responded. I have had terrible, terrible nightmares for years. Until just now, I didn't put it together with feeling sick. Even the ones that I started having shortly after the GI symptoms started. They got worse around the same time, but I never made the connection. I thought it was totally separate. EVEN THOUGH I can remember saying...
  20. It's comforting that there are other people out there who don't think I'm crazy.
  21. I just seem to go from bad to worse. I have had a pounding headache three days in a row now. I was dizzy and nauseated all day yesterday. I woke up at three from a terrible dream; I was on a roller coaster and was getting dizzy and sick to my stomach, and I wanted them to stop but they wouldn't. Needless to say, I woke up feeling dizzy and nauseated....
  22. You've scared me straight! Just kidding but I am going to go back for a thyroid test....
  23. I have very low temps too...lowest was 95.0 (at a Dr.'s office, so I guess the thermometer should have been accurate). Average around 96.5. I had hyperthyroidism as a baby, have complained of fatique, and currently have a small nodule on my thyroid. In spite of this, none of my doctors have wanted to do anything because my TSH keeps coming in normal. ...
  24. The Real Food Daily cookbook by Anne Gentry is good for recipes that are gluten- and dairy-free. Some of the recipes do actuallyc all for flours, but they are easy to substitute.
  25. What age were you diagnosed with celiac's/gluten intolerance? 28 What were your most common symptoms? Loose stool, heartburn, abdominal cramps, malabsorption, brainfog, irritability What are your symptoms when you eat gluten now? Extreme irritability, brainfog, cramps, depression, loose stool, heartburn Do you consider yourself more sensitive...
