ARCHIVED Extreme Bloat When Hungry?
spunky replied to givenupgluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I don't know what the cause of it is, but I have similar feelings... I don't know if I would call it bloat, exactly, but it feels, as someone else called it, like my stomach begins digesting itself if I get too hungry. Before going gluten free, everybody in the world laughed at how I ate, was never overweight at all, but I ate tons and tons more than anybody... -
ARCHIVED Conagra May Not Be Labeling All Gluten Sources!
spunky replied to Mae1118's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have my doubts about some "gluten-free" labeling practices too. Whenever possible, I try my best (not always easy or possible) to buy foods more in their whole state...I eat a lot of popcorn, but I buy the kind you pop on the stove only. That way, whatever goes on there for flavoring is under my control. -
ARCHIVED 1 Week Of Diarrhea
spunky replied to odcdinah's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Something similar seems to have happened to me. I was fine two Sundays ago, ate supper, then 30 minutes later was doubled over for the rest of the night, with what I call volcanic explosions of the rear end... very bad D.!!!! Since then, there's been abdominal turbulence and just the D tendency, although not as violent as that first night, pain, gas... -
Here's something I've been doing that works for me... I call it: On-the-Spot Peach Crisp One small, individual-sized container of canned peaches (or other fruit) One Gladware container with about a cup of dry Rice Chex in it A pinch of shredded coconut, if desired, to go on top (you can through it in the Gladware with the Rice Chex) ...

ARCHIVED Osteoporosis Is Reversing!
spunky replied to mamasaidso's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Congratulations on your good bones! I've read that anyone with osteoporosis, even in the absence of other symptoms, should consider being tested for celiac. -
ARCHIVED Lesson: Never Take Food From Strangers
spunky replied to wsieving's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That lady sounds like a psycho! I'd probably call the store manager and explain why they just lost my business. -
Good for you. The more time goes by, the better I feel, and the better I feel, the more yummy stuff looks... but I just stop and remember the pathetic image of myself doubled over in the bathroom... and all the other things that went along with that... then the goodies don't look so good anymore. THere was a gastro who said publicly he thought celiacs...

ARCHIVED Intestinal Healing Time
spunky replied to Ms. Skinny Chic's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm only self-diagnosed but my experience says 2 years is your safest bet. I've read on the net where some people say they got better faster than that... for me, though, my first six months were like an intestinal roller coaster... after six months, I started having good days that seemed normal for the first time in many years... then a lot of back and forth... -
I was once told I was allergic to bee stings, then told later on that swelling up really big locally is not the same as allergy and I have nothing to worry about... still, I do swell up big locally after most stings... but then I started putting ice on the sting and alternating that with either activated charcoal or chewing tobacco, and found that doing that...

ARCHIVED Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome- Anyone Heard Of This (a.k.a. The Nutcracker Syndrome)
spunky replied to dagreen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've never heard of this condition before, but am sorry to hear so many are dealing with it. This might be just really stupid, but I'm wondering about something... I used to have a friend who became a chiropractor (he got divorced, moved away, and I lost touch with him three decades ago)... anyway, this friend would treat people with a hiatal hernia, which... -
ARCHIVED Mallow Whipped Sweet Potatoes
spunky replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oops....sorry, went back to print the recipe and saw that you did add the question about using Rice Chex... LOL... I didn't get that far the other time... got too HUNGRY!!!! Thanks for the recipe!!! -
ARCHIVED Mallow Whipped Sweet Potatoes
spunky replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This sounds very good! Thanks for posting. I wonder if Rice Chex could be used instead of the gluten-free rice krispies? Just wondering because since Rice Chex are so mainstream they COULD possibly be cheaper/easier to find than gluten-free rice krispies. I think I'll try this one for this year's holiday dinners!!! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Dog Food Again..
spunky replied to Yenni's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have been very disappointed in finding gluten-free dog food that is affordable, easy to find locally, and that the dogs will eat... we were buying this expensive stuff (can't remember which brand now) for 50 bucks a pop... only about 25 lbs. per bag... and they wouldn't eat the stuff unless they just gave up on having anything else... I mean it would sit... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Cereal
spunky replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I hope you report back how that ice cream bowl thing turns out for your DD. I saw gluten-free ice cream cones in the health food store one time... I don't remember the brand name, was tempted to buy, but the cost was absolutely outrageous. I keep dreaming of a way that Rice Chex could somehow be pressed together and rolled into an ice cream cone... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Cereal
spunky replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This is slightly off topic, but not really... ... but I noticed that if you put Rice Chex into your ice-cream or other frozen dessert, it tastes just like an ice cream cone, and it's really, really good. Then if you make a Sundae with a couple of scoops, plus banana slices, chocolate syrup, nuts or coconut or whatever sprinkled on top, and you add... -
ARCHIVED Isn't Baking Soda And Powder Gluten Free?
spunky replied to Bellamia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Baking soda should be naturally gluten free (unless it had some fillers in it or something, which I've never seen, ever). Baking powder, on the other hand, COULD have gluten in it, so read the labels. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda, something acidic to make the baking soda activate (cream of tartar, etc.) and the a starch of some type to carry... -
I've been working in a university academic, main library for almost 20 years now. Not a librarian, just academic support staff. I normally have to touch all the computers in the building, plus all the printers and microform equipment, to do daily checks and routine trouble-shooting, etc., and get there before janitorial personnel do and usually find wrappers...

ARCHIVED Does Anybody Else Have This Weird Issue With Wheat?
spunky replied to mytummyhurts's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
YES! I've seen many nice wheat-weavings, decorations, etc., and these days they just make me cringe!!!! I seriously doubt this could be harmful in anyway, it must just be psychological association. I don't like looking at them, myself, though. -
ARCHIVED Teeccino Coffee
spunky replied to raen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Teecino is not coffee... it's a coffee substitute. Besides the barley, it has inulin, which can cause IBS symptoms in people with touchy tums... I used to try to drink this stuff when following a vegan diet that shunned all coffee (McDougall diet)... this was the coffee substitute Dr. McDougall recommended. Teecino always made me feel terrible... didn... -
ARCHIVED How Soon Do Symptoms Appear If Accidently Consumed Gluten?
spunky replied to braleycakes's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm older and self-diagnosed, but here's what I've come to discover about myself and accidental glutenings... my intestinal symptoms don't occur for two or three days... I've learned though, that there are early warning signs easy to ignore... while I'm eating, I might have mild, almost unnoticeable burning or acid reflux... hardly noticeable, but I've... -
ARCHIVED Do Sensitivity Levels Go Down?
spunky replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A published, well-known celiac researcher/author once told me in correspondence that after some time, his reactions to accidental ingestion of gluten became less severe and he was only mildy ill from them by that time. I was only a few months gluten free at the time, and didn't think to ask how much time it took for him to get that way...I was into thinking... -
ARCHIVED Autoimmunity After Going Gluten Free
spunky replied to dana.naomi's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
According to the veternarian who has made a lifelong study of celiac in both pets and people, gut issues are the first to resolve after getting off gluten... neurological, muscular, skin, etc. issues take years to resolve. His feeling, from doctoring animals with similar issues, is that dairy proteins, soy protein and sometimes also corn protein to a lesser... -
ARCHIVED Weird Reactions To Medications
spunky replied to wowzer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm the same way... I can't seem to take anything. Once when we all had the flu, I tried Nyquil and it put everybody else out for the night... for me, I got the shakes, strange & scary sensations and felt like I was tripping out and dying, on top of having to put up with the high fever, cough, aches, etc., plus getting to stay up all night while everybody... -
ARCHIVED Fried Chicken And Onion Rings
spunky replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds GREAT! I agree... I normally go for baked, but sometimes you just want FRIED!!! Did you make these in a frying pan/skillet, or are you talkin' some kinda deep fryer thing like those old FRY BABIES people used to have?
