  1. At two weeks gluten free my body was so topsy-turvey I didn't know if I'd ever feel really WELL. It's true you have a huge learning curve about cross-contamination during the first several weeks or possibly even months, and it's also true that other things are likely to suddenly start messing with your gut too, such as soy, dairy, or other stuff that didn...
  2. I read about this a long time ago and realized I must have it to some degree. I also don't like movies because the actors and actresses look too much alike to me. I can actually remember people's names, their hobbies or interests, other facts about them, but it takes me months of seeing the person to be able to recognize them somehwere. I know people...
  3. I agree...that's insanity, giving fish wheat at all, let alone processed into flour! I know fish will eat bread...but I can't imagine how it could be healthy for them. Seems they would be better off with some indigenous underwater vegetation and worms and insects and stuff. Wonder if there is some more natural type fish food available somehwere? ...
  4. Sometimes poultry, even "vegetarian, organic, etc." birds, are fed a special high sodium wheat that makes them retain water and become very plump and juicy. Apparently some dogs with wheat intolerance have been known to react to this poulty. I guess it's possible that some people might too.
  5. The few times I've accidentally gotten gluten in the past year and a half, it took 3 weeks to totally go away...for me, it's almost like the process of coming down with and then getting over the flu...I might just have two or three days where I think something's wrong, but not sure, followed by a solid week of hell, and then a week or two of things trying...
  6. Some research seems to indicate that oats that are guaranteed free of contamination with other grains might be tolerated by some people who react to gluten...these type of oats or oat products are hard to find and expensive. Lots of people react to the protein in any oats. I tried eating flatbread made with oat flour and it made me sick. You might want...
  7. I don't have first-hand experience but my understanding is that if the woman is careful about being gluten free, she should not have those problems with pregnancies.
  8. When you get the chance, look up Dogtor J's website...a vet in Alabama who treats dogs' seizures and other disorders through diet. He has a huge website, and is himself a celiac, and through awareness of that whole thing has researched quite a bit and found that most dogs with seizures will recuperate if kept gluten free. He advocates in addition...
  9. Keith Olbermann, of MSNBC, or whichever network he hosts a news show on, has celiac.
  10. Never heard of it, but it sounds good! I'd be interested in trying some if I ever saw it or learned to make it. I've wanted to try coconut flour too, but haven't found it anywhere around me.
  11. I ended up giving up soy after about a year gluten free...started having similar symptoms as gluten, only with me they were milder than my gluten symptoms had been...for a while I thought I kept getting gluten somewhere along the way...but cutting out the soy seemed to be the answer. The same set of sypmtoms, worse than soy, but still milder than gluten...
  12. ugh...thanks for the headsup. Goes to show that we all do have to keep on our toes at all times...gotta read them labels!!!!
  13. This probably isn't too helpful, but just saying I've had a few dizzy spells off and on since quitting gluten, 19 months ago. Along the way, I had to quit soy too...was already dairy free. I had been vegan for over 10 years and getting quite hungry without gluten or soy, so I picked up fish and eggs...then later realized eggs now make me sick too, although...
  14. I think during the early healing process, a lot of strange, new intestinal things can happen. You can try taking some fiber (although this doesn't agree with some individuals, so be careful about adding it to see how your body responds) that is gentle, gluten free, such as Citricel or ground flax seeds and see if that helps. Things might get better after...
  15. The companies will that tell us that, whether on a website or on a label, ALWAYS get my business at this point. Having to hunt for ingred. info and/or decipher confusing e-mails from company reps. that sound like sales pitches, rather than the information needed by the consumer is getting old with me, really fast. Before gluten -free days, I never used...
  16. I hope he enjoyed it!!! My dog loves my gluten free bread!
  17. Hang in there. For me, the first 6 months gluten free were rough...I was depressed and sick...there were changes in my symptoms, but not much I could really call "better," or what I was hoping for. During the 7th month, things began to change. It was like the sun started shining again...I felt happy and hopeful, and my health started responding well...
  18. I hope it all works out for ya! If I could eat soy, I'd be vegan again too...but without soy sauce, tofu, tofu pups hot dogs, etc., not to mention all the gluteny stuff...I just can't seem to manage anymore. Let us know how your veganism goes! I hope it keeps working for you!
  19. I've tried it and haven't liked it at all. To me, the flavor is bitter, the grains are a bad size for enjoyable eating, and kind of mealy...texture of undercooked grain of some sort, no matter how long I tried cooking it. Of course, it could have been my total ignorance of this grain that caused my efforts to be bad. A friend once brought me a package...
  20. Glad to hear you've gotten past the hard part! I think I have too...and my health is so, so amazingly better now. If it weren't for this board, and my many months of lurking, often in tears, I hate to think what kind of awful shape I'd be in today.
  21. I would wait to see what happened to the people who took it, like 30 years from now, how are they doing? By then, I'll be 84 years old and so used to being gluten free I proably wouldn't care anyhow! sometimes new medical ideas seem promising, but look how often lawyers are advertising for class-action law suits against drugs or medical devices recently...
  22. Tom's of Maine toothpastes are gluten free...see their website for details.
  23. Have a nice trip, Hathor! And I hope you find lots of good stuff to eat! I hear European countries are more aware of celiac, so, at least let's hope that's true...not sure about the other sensitivities, though. As for vegan...oh my gosh...I have a lot of very confused feelings about this right now. In my own case, I was vegetarian, including eggs and...
  24. It might help if she could make friends in some local celiac support group...or even if she would be interested in making friends on the teenage forum here. Kids that age are often more into doing stuff with mutually-minded friends than family...makes them feel more independent.
  25. Every morning for breakfast I have a bowl of Perky-O's, with a handful of dried goji berries, a sliced banana, and almond milk. Tasty and good. I started buying them because of their supposed health benefits; they are expensive, but we just each eat a small handful on our morning cereal. Haven't noticed any miraculous stuff, reduced cellulite, or any...
