  1. Hi, I've never been tested, myself, because I am just so paranoid about doctors at this point. I just wanted to tell you about what happened to me so you can compare results, and then decide for yourself what you want to do. First, I was always healthy and decided to go vegetarian to be even healthier, etc. At the age of 40, I went vegetarian, and...
  2. For me, living without gluten for the past 10 months has definitely been worth it! I'm not diagnosed...have had on and off IBS-like troubles forever, but they weren't severe enough to really grab my attention (I thought everybody had that!!!). Then I went vegan around 10 years ago...giving up all dairy and casein did help some, but I found myself having...
  3. I had such a combination, such a weird condition, not really diarrhea, but not really constipation, just very annoying, difficult too-much pooping and lots of discomfort and bad things...I couldn't explain it with existing words, so I re-named it constarrhea...for lack of better description. I was never diganosed by anyone other than myself, but that constarrhea...
  4. I had to look that one up last week...I'd bought some peel-u chewing gum, and was unsure about the maltitol...so I looked it up on the fobidden/safe lists on this web site...it was listed as safe, no gluten.
  5. On second thought, CarlaB has a good point...maybe you shouldn't really even have to worry about bringing something for everyone else if you can't eat anything there except for what you bring for yourself. And the person who said bring gluten free pasta salad make a good point too...I guess there could be several ways to approach this kind of problem ...
  6. I would bring something to share with the group, but not anything I couldn't eat. People just don't get it, and you HAVE to watch out for yourself! I'd bring a fruit/veggie plate or something to share and if they say anything about the pasta salad tell 'em you didn't feel like paying for something you can't eat and don't wanna take a chance on getting...
  7. WOW! I had some years in my life where I had such bad phobias with panic attacks that I couldn't work, and it took a couple of years of struggling each time to get it back under control. I also had unexplained vertigo several times, when I couldn't even walk or find the door knobs to open them, etc. It's been almost daily with me that whenever I lie...
  8. I've heard of healing crises before, but I never used to believe in them. Then I stopped gluten last February(no doctors involved, just desperation and researching and wanting to stop being sicker and sicker all the time and start trying something to get well). Man, my body has just been jerked around quite a bit since then...just on its own. I got confused...
  9. Do you mean use confectioner's sugar in place of the regular sugar called for in the recipe...not just the part you sprinkle on top????? thanks
  10. I would want my own pans, knives, silverware, plates & cups (especially if they are Gladware or some kind of plastic), etc. Just the bare minimum, maybe, but you can't rely on intensils and stuff other people are using...it's too difficult and makes getting sick too easy, staying well too much work. I would also get myself a small cutting board that...
  11. I LOVE EnerG Tapioca bread...I griddle it with rice vermicelli spaghetti, putting garlic and basil on it while it browns on the griddle...it's really, really good that way. Plus I make French toast with it and eat pbj sandwiches (one of my all-time favorites!) with it. I made stuffing with it one time too...GREAT stuffing. I cut the whole loaf into...
  12. Just skimming through all of this very fast, this morning, not much time. But as a non-diagnosed person who has come to greatly FEAR gluten because of my own experimentation during the past 9 months, and FINALLY happy to feel like a well person...not knowing how to explain that when I need to...and seeing something that just cracked me up on one of the...
  13. It kinda frustrates me when my intolerance, celiac, or whatever it is that makes me sick when I have gluten and well when I don't, seems to not be taken seriously or believed just because I found it out myself, without doctors or diagnositic tools. That gets frustrating. My husband thinks I'm nuts, but at least he is supportive and tries to help me out...
  14. Thanks, Nini! Your opinion means a lot to me...and I am just dying for a stick of gum this afternoon!
  15. I've been afraid of chewing gum since going gluten free. Then I came across a list that had Big Red Cinnamon Gum listed as safe, so i bought lots of it. I think I happened to have gotten glutened by eating someone's "gluten free" vegetable soup two weekends ago, but I also had just started chewing the Big Red Gum at the same time, so I don't know for...
  16. I'm glad that attitude doesn't prevail on this board, because I feel at a time when I really needed answers and guidance, even lurking here for several months pretty much saved my life, so to speak. Since I didn't actually know for a fact what was wrong with me, I didn't feel I should post until I was certain the diet was making me well again. I never...
  17. I am only self-diagnosed too, because I absolutely cannot stand doctors because of previous experiences with them, about 20 years ago. It took me 13 or 14 years to diagnose myself and finally get to the gluten free experiment, which I've been doing only 9 months now and have totally changed my life around...and I guess if I HAD gone to a doctor I probably...
  18. UH-OH...I never really thought about her can opener!!!! That would make perfect sense. I'm sure the other things would be possibilites too, but it just started driving me crazy, making me feel out of control to not be able to pinpoint this error so I could try to avoid making the same mistake in the future. Thanks for all the thoughts and encouragement...
  19. Thanks for the link...I had to miss the show, but was very encouraged to see this on CNN...I e-mailed the link to relatives, so they'd understand (even though I never go to doctors because I agree with those who kinda bad-mouthed the pharm industry, etc., I mean, I know some docs and some drugs have saved people's lives, but in my own case, it's always gone...
  20. Does anyone know if Swanson's veggie broth in a can is gluten free? I looked at a can in the store and didn't see anything bad in there. I also looked at Kroger brand veggie broth and saw hydrolyzed vegetable protein, which I understand might be gluten, or maybe not. I've been sick for a whole week, and searching for what did it...I know the person who...
  21. Thanks, Nini. I really would feel better if I could find the source of the gluten! I think I am feeling better this morning, though, so I hope it's wearing off.
  22. I agree that one week is probably nothing; you really can't expect results that quickly...sorry. I'm self-diagnosed and found the first several months trying, confusing, felt like giving up all the time. Finally, I made myself a little chart of symptoms, listing the symptoms on the left-hand side of the page and having 1-10 under each symptom, so that...
  23. I posted about this last week and I appreciate the responses. Back then, I was sick, after having been pretty normal and well for 2 whole months. Now I'm still not back to normal again yet. This is day number 8 of being all messed up. I had soup at someone's house, and they had assured me it was gluten free: it had canned veggies and gluten free veggie...

    ARCHIVED Help!

I have been gluten free for 9 months, and feeling really great and just about normal, I think, for the past two months. Now I am really sick. Two things I did differently: I chewed Big Red Cinnamon gum, which I thought I'd read on safe list somewhere. And I got into a situation in which I had to eat somebody's homemade soup to be polite. I sort...
  25. Welcome! I never got any diagnosis either. I've been gluten free for 9 months and feel better than I have for 15 years. Actually, I forgot what it was like to just live, and not always worry about bathrooms, farting around people, feeling terrible, not being able to plan on doing things because you don't know how bad you're gonna feel, and all of...
