I've read that high fructose corn syrup really bothers a lot of people.

ARCHIVED Eye Aches Related To Gluten?
spunky replied to CMCM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am a self-diagnosing type person and avoid doctors at all costs, so my perspective on this is highly subjective. But I have had eye aches, aching behind the eye, for years. It's especially bad in the left eye. I believe in my own case this is related to a TMJ problem, a jaw tension problem. How I sleep, how I work at the computer and other things seem... -
ARCHIVED Need Advice From People With Experience!
spunky replied to mumseyh's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can see the value of having an official diagnosis; I don't have one myself. But I agree with the doctor who said "If pickles make you sick, don't eat them". If it hurts to hit yourself with a hammer, rather than to have extensive tests that confirm it, it might sometimes be easier just to stop doing it. It's a personal choice we all have to consider... -
ARCHIVED Started Gluten Free Diet, Having Bloating!
spunky replied to cbnanny's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For the first three or four months gluten free, I had much less diarrhea than I'd been having while on gluten, but tons more gas. Also, check your package of EmergenceC...some flavors do say "Contains Wheat" on the back of the package!!!! -
ARCHIVED Toothpaste
spunky replied to Sillyyakdidi's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm kind of confused about toothpaste. I've read to watch for hidden gluten in toothpastes, and after searching the net, Tom's of Maine was the only one that listed some of their toothpastes as gluten free. Now I buy one of the gluten free Tom's toothpastes. But in just reading labels of easier to find, cheaper toothpastes, I can't see anything that would... -
ARCHIVED Does This Ever Happen To Seasoned Gluten-free People?
spunky replied to spunky's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks. My entire household is gluten free: it's just myself and husband, and he just eats gluten away from home now. It's driving me crazy trying to figure out what could've happened. Always makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one, at least. -
ARCHIVED Does This Ever Happen To Seasoned Gluten-free People?
spunky posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well I'm rounding out the first full gluten free year, and was so happy about how great I've been feeling...then a few nights ago I felt the old gluten gas bombs starting to position themselves and getting ready to deploy. I dismissed the possibilbity and tried to just ignore it, because I have been extremely careful and I have not touched anything at all... -
I was told a couple of decades ago I had "enamel erosion" and ended up getting almost all my teeth crowned. I think all but my eye teeth are crowned by now. Many years later, I suddenly developed strange intestinal sypmtoms, took myself off of guten, and now that's about gone too. Maybe the weird teeth should've been a clue for future problems developing...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Vegetarian "meats"
spunky replied to sewfunky's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think Tofu Pups "hot dogs" are gluten free...if you find them in a health food store, read the label to be sure. I haven't bought them in a long time, but I think at least they used to be gluten free, and hopefully still are. -
I hope your diagnosis and treatment will help you see much improvement in your health soon. Keep in mind that sometimes even gastroenterologists get many of these diseases confused, celiac, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, according to Dr. Peter Green's CNN interview. So, well I hope you are better real quick and find you can eat anything you want. If you...

ARCHIVED Help!why Am I Feeling Bad Again?
spunky replied to SanteeBay's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just ending my first year gluten free, I can say the first half of that year went like a wild roller coaster ride: good, then bad, then good, etc. It seems anything can happen. I never figured it all out, but I am 100% better now, and even my "bad" days are really so much better than any few good days I used to have. Sometimes now, doing the simplest thing... -
ARCHIVED Citricel--supposed To Be Safe?
spunky replied to olalisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can substitute a couple of tablespoons of ground flax meal in place of any packaged fiber product. Stir the ground flax into some juice and drink/chew, then follow through with a glass of water. The first 2 or 3 days you might have some gas or other mild symptoms, but that goes away and then everything works out fine from there. You never have to... -
ARCHIVED Maintain A Healthy Bowel?
spunky replied to sewfunky's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was starting to actually have difficulty with constipation for the past couple of weeks. I started adding ground flax seeds to stuff like yogurt, cereal, or anything like that. I add 3 Tablespoons of ground flax meal and drink a whole glass of water with it. Tastes awful but really works. Totally cleared up the problem...now I go once each morning... -
ARCHIVED Poll: Official Diagnosis Or ?
spunky replied to Nantzie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Self-diagnosed by reading, reading, reading! I feel a little shy about chiming in too often here, just because I'm not "official". But these days...just about 5 weeks short of one year gluten free...feeling SO MUCH BETTER! I won't ever eat gluten again...not on purpose, anyway, and hopefully not by accident either. -
ARCHIVED One Year gluten-free Anniversary Today
spunky replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Congratulations for both of those accomplishments! I'm right on your heels (Feb. 5th my one year anniversary), except for the baby part, LOL! -
ARCHIVED Vegetarian Celiac...craving Meat!
spunky replied to Ksmith's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was a vegetarian for several years and then have been vegan for the past decade or so. After about 5 or 6 months gluten free, I started having meat cravings for the first time in at least 20 years. I caved and ate some wild salmon, wild cod, and farmed shrimp. I don't know what is going on, or why, but they taste good suddenly and I feel I'm recovering... -
People used to stop to laugh at my gut during meetings. All of us sitting around a conference table, someone talking with the hum of powerpoint going, and then everybody laughing and looking in my direction as the howling proceeded. Sounded like a pack of wolves living down in there (and hurt too!). At some point, I think maybe two or three months or...

ARCHIVED Exciting Side-effects Of Non-gluten Diet?
spunky replied to betterbelly's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, I've noticed that same thing with the urination frequency. Besides getting well from acid reflux, diarrhea and constipation both every day--having to go up to 15 times per day for several years...loud stomach noises and pains, etc. Now my stomach is very quiet and calm...very smooth and painless digestion. I used to have bad gas and passing the... -
ARCHIVED Not Diagnosed By Doctor; But On Diet Anyway...
spunky replied to betterbelly's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I just went through wondering about all of this too. For me, I went gluten free almost a year ago and it took several months to finally see improvement. I was feeling really well there for a while, and then started doubting it WAS the gluten...feeling sort of lost with knowing what had been wrong all those years. I thought about challenging myself... -
Thanks for all the replies! We were on vacation during the holidays, so I didn't want to risk making myself sick with a challenge. After that, I didn't want to risk making myself sick because I had to come back to work. With so much fear of challenging, I think, for now, the best bet for me is to sit tight, keep on eating gluten free, and enjoy feeling...

Well it's kind of scary. I'll have to think about this for a while and see if I work up the nerve to do it. Maybe at some point I'll stop worrying and just figure it doesn't make sense to do that if I'm feeling so good these days. I'm kind of afraid of either making myself really sick, or really confused if nothing happens when I try this. I don't want...

ARCHIVED Substitutes For Potato Starch & Corn Starch?
spunky replied to PennyG's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've been baking with sorghum flour and like it very much. You have to add a little more liquid, stir it a long time, and bake longer than gluten flours. It's worked very well for me with stuff like cookies, muffins and cupcakes (I haven't tried layer cakes or breads), pot pie crusts, cobbler crusts, pancakes and waffles, etc. -
Thanks. I might be too broke for the Enterolab...if I'd gone to a doctor, it would've been cheap because of the insurance, but as I said before, I haven't trusted doctors for a couple of decades and haven't been. As far as doing my own little challenge...if I haven't touched, at least not on purpose, any gluten for the past 10 months...does anybody know...

I'm having trouble deciding about this: I can't believe it, but for the past two or three days I've been wondering if my thinking is on track, or if I'm just crazy. First of all, I hate doctors and never go to any kind of health care professionals (except I've had to go to dentists lots of times)...so, 13 years ago, at the age of 40, I began to have some...

ARCHIVED Sour Cream
spunky replied to ilovechocolate's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would like to know about this too. I used to always use Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese and sour cream...I've been afraid to try since going gluten free.
